Abstract

An acoustic touch apparatus that utilizes the transfer of surface acoustic waves from one surface, through the touch substrate, to another surface to enable multi-touch capabilities.

Claims (28)

1. An acoustic touch apparatus that distinguishes simultaneous touches, comprising a substrate that is adapted to utilize a transfer of surface acoustic waves, through the substrate, between a top surface and a bottom surface of the substrate to vary touch sensitivity along a respective acoustic path across a substrate touch region via top-bottom oscillation and acoustic transducers that are adapted to transmit and receive the surface acoustic waves travelling between the top surface and the bottom surface of the substrate, said substrate touch region providing additional signal information of touch responses of receiving transducers sufficient to permit the apparatus to determine an axis coordinate of a respective touch on the substrate touch region.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the additional signal information comprises a comparison of the touch responses of receiving transducers with non-touch responses of the receiving transducers.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the additional signal information comprises a comparison of the signal level changes of the touch responses of receiving transducers.

4. The acoustic touch apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

said substrate touch region provides time delay signal information of touch responses of the receiving transducers sufficient to permit the apparatus to determine a first coordinate of the axis coordinate; and

said substrate touch region providing the additional signal information includes said substrate touch region providing the additional signal information sufficient to permit the apparatus to determine a second coordinate of the axis coordinate.

5. The acoustic touch apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the first coordinate and the second coordinate are defined along orthogonal axes.

6. The acoustic touch apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the additional signal information comprises a ratio of bottom to top touch sensitivity of the substrate touch region.

7. The acoustic touch apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the ratio of bottom to top touch sensitivity permits the apparatus to determine the second coordinate of the axis coordinate based on a distance L between a transmitting transducer adapted to transmit the surface acoustic waves along an acoustic path and a receiving transducer adapted to receive the transmitted surface acoustic waves.

8. The acoustic touch apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the distance L is substantially equal to one-half of beat wavelength A of the surface acoustic waves transmitted by the acoustic transducer adapted to transmit the surface acoustic waves.

9. The acoustic touch apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the distance L is smaller than the beat wavelength A of the surface acoustic waves transmitted by the acoustic transducer adapted to transmit the surface acoustic waves.

10. The acoustic touch apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the substrate touch region provides the additional signal information via the transfer of the surface acoustic waves, through the substrate, between the the top surface and the bottom surface of the substrate to vary the touch sensitivity along the respective acoustic path.

11. A method of distinguishing simultaneous touches by an acoustic touch apparatus, comprising:

transmitting, by transmitting acoustic transducers, surface acoustic waves along acoustic paths across a substrate touch region of a substrate, wherein the substrate is adapted to utilize a transfer of the surface acoustic waves, through the substrate, between a top surface and a bottom surface of the substrate to vary touch sensitivity along the acoustic paths across the substrate touch region via top-bottom oscillation, the varied touch sensitivity providing additional signal information of touch responses indicating an axis coordinate of a respective touch on the substrate touch region;

receiving, by receiving acoustic transducers, the surface acoustic waves subsequent to traversal of the surface acoustic waves along the acoustic paths across the substrate touch region;

determining, by a controller, the additional signal information based on the surface acoustic waves received by the receiving acoustic transducers; and

determining, by the controller, the axis coordinate of the respective touch on the substrate touch region based at least in part on the additional signal information.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the additional signal information comprises a comparison of touch responses of the receiving acoustic transducers with non-touch responses of the receiving acoustic transducers.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the additional signal information comprises a comparison of the signal level changes of the touch responses of the receiving acoustic transducers.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the substrate touch region provides time delay signal information of touch responses of the receiving acoustic transducers indicating a first coordinate of the axis coordinate; and

the additional signal information indicates a second coordinate of the axis coordinate.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first coordinate and the second coordinate are defined along orthogonal axes.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the additional signal information comprises a ratio of bottom to top touch sensitivity of the substrate touch region.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the ratio of bottom to top touch sensitivity permits the controller to determine the second coordinate of the axis coordinate based a distance L between a transmitting acoustic transducer adapted to transmit the surface acoustic waves along an acoustic path and a receiving acoustic transducer adapted to receive the transmitted surface acoustic waves.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the distance L is substantially equal to one-half of beat wavelength A of the surface acoustic waves transmitted by the transmitting acoustic transducer adapted to transmit the surface acoustic waves.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein distance L is smaller than the beat wavelength A of the surface acoustic waves transmitted by the transmitting acoustic transducer adapted to transmit the surface acoustic waves.

20. The method of claim 11 further comprising determining, by the controller, a second axis coordinate of a second touch on the substrate touch region based at least in part on the additional signal information.
