Abstract

A first device that includes a processor configured to transmit/receive a trigger message to/from a second device based on wireless short-range communication. The trigger message initiates a registration process within a wireless local area network (WLAN).

Claims (45)

1. A first mobile device, comprising:

a first processor configured to:

automatically transmit a trigger message to a second mobile device with a second processor using wireless short-range communication when the mobile device is within communication range of the second mobile device, wherein the trigger message initiates a registration process with a wireless local area network (WLAN); and

receive a trigger response message from the second mobile device in response to transmitting the trigger message, wherein the trigger response message comprises a device identifier (ID) that identifies the first mobile device and a service set ID (SSID) that identifies the WLAN.

2. The first device of claim 1 wherein the wireless short-range communication includes one of near field communication (NFC), Bluetooth, Zig bee, wireless universal serial bus, or an ultra-wideband technology.

3. The first mobile device of claim 1 wherein the first mobile device comprises a non-access point station non-AP STA) and wherein the wireless short-range communication comprises near field communication.

4. The first device of claim 3 wherein the first processor is further configured to include a mobile ID within the trigger message, the mobile ID identifying the non-AP STA.

5. The first device of claim 1 , wherein the first processor is further configured to transmit a WLAN registration request in response to receiving the trigger response message.

6. The first mobile device of claim 1 wherein the second mobile device comprises an NFC-enabled device.

7. The first device of claim 1 wherein the first mobile device comprises a near field communication (NFC)-enabled device and the second mobile device comprises a non-access point station (non-AP STA).

8. The first mobile device of claim 7 wherein the first processor is further configured to include at least one of a second device ID or the SSID within the trigger message, the second device ID identifying the NFC-enabled device and the SSID identifying the WLAN.

9. The first device of claim 7 wherein the non-AP STA transmits a WLAN registration request message in response to the trigger message.

10. A first mobile device, comprising:

a processor configured to:

receive a trigger message transmitted from a second mobile device using wireless short-range communication when the first mobile device is within communication range of the second mobile device, wherein the trigger message initiates a registration process with a wireless local area network (WLAN), further wherein the wireless short-range communication provides for communications to and from the second mobile device, and wherein the trigger message is automatically transmitted by the second mobile device;

transmit a trigger response message to the second mobile device, the trigger response message comprises a device identifier (ID) that identifies the first device and a service set ID (SSID) that identifies the WLAN.

11. The first mobile device of claim 10 wherein the wireless short-range communication includes one of near field communication (NFC), Bluetooth, Zig bee, wireless universal serial bus, or an ultra-wideband technology.

12. The first mobile device of claim 10 wherein the first mobile device comprises a non-access point station (non-AP STA) and wherein the wireless short-range communication comprises near field communication (NFC).

13. The first mobile device of claim 12 wherein the processor is further configured to receive the device ID within the trigger message, the device ID identifying a NFC-enabled device.

14. The first mobile device of claim 13 wherein the processor is further configured to transmit a WLAN registration request message in response to the trigger message.

15. The first mobile device of claim 14 wherein the processor is further configured to include at least one of the device ID, an ID associated with the non-AP STA, or an authentication credential associated with the non-AP STA within the WLAN registration request message.

16. The first mobile device of claim 13 wherein the processor is further configured to transmit an information message in response to receiving the trigger message.

17. The first mobile device of claim 16 wherein the processor is further configured to include at least one of device information that identifies the non-AP STA or user information that identifies a user of the non-AP STA within the information message.

18. The first mobile device of claim 10 wherein the first mobile device comprises a near field communication (NFC)-enabled device and the second mobile device comprises a non-access point station (non-AP STA).

19. The first mobile device of claim 18 wherein the processor is further configured to receive a mobile ID within the trigger message, the mobile ID identifying the non-AP STA.

20. The first mobile device of claim 10 , wherein the trigger response further comprises at least one of a mobile ID, or a network identifier that identifies a network to which the WLAN is connected to or to which the WLAN is associated with within the trigger response message.

21. A method, comprising:

transmitting, by a first mobile device, a trigger message to a second mobile device using wireless short-range near field communication (NFC), wherein the first mobile device comprises a near field communication (NFC)-enabled device and the second mobile device comprises a non-access point station (non-AP STA), wherein the trigger message initiates a registration process with a wireless local area network (WLAN), wherein the trigger message is automatically transmitted to the second mobile device; and

receiving, in response to the trigger message, a trigger response message that includes a mobile identifier (ID) which is a device ID that identifies the NFC-enabled device, and a Service Set ID (SSID) that identifies the WLAN.

22. The method of claim 21 further comprising transmitting a WLAN registration request in response to receiving the trigger response message.

23. The method of claim 21 wherein the trigger response message includes mobile identifier (ID) a second device ID that identifies the non-AP STA, and a service set ID (SSID) that identifies the WLAN.

24. The method of claim 21 wherein the trigger message includes at least one of a device ID or SSID, the device ID identifying the NFC-enabled device and the SSID identifying the WLAN.

25. The method of claim 21 further comprising transmitting, by the non-AP STA, a WLAN registration request message in response to the trigger message.

26. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a first mobile device, a trigger message transmitted from a second mobile device using short-range near field communication (NFC), wherein one of the first mobile device or the second mobile device is a NFC-enabled device and one is a non-access point station (non-AP STA), such that the trigger message includes a device identifier (ID) identifying the NFC-enabled device, wherein the trigger message initiates a registration process with a wireless local area network (WLAN), wherein the trigger message is received from the second mobile device when the first mobile device is within communication range of the second mobile device, the trigger message being automatically transmitted by the second mobile device; and

transmitting, by the first mobile device, a trigger response message to the second mobile device, wherein the trigger response message comprises the device ID and a service set ID [SSID} that identifies the WLAN.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein the first mobile device comprises the non-access point station (non-AP STA) and the second mobile device comprises the NFC-enabled device.

28. The method of claim 27 wherein the registration process further comprises transmitting a WLAN registration request message in response to receiving the trigger message.

29. The method of claim 28 further comprising including at least one of the device ID, an identifier associated with the non-AP STA, or an authentication credential associated with the non-AP STA within the WLAN registration request message.

30. The method of claim 26 further comprising transmitting an information message in response to receiving the trigger message.

31. The method of claim 30 wherein the information message includes at least one of device information that identifies the non-AP STA or user information that identifies a user of the non-AP STA.

32. The method of claim 26 wherein the first mobile device comprises the near field communication (NFC)-enabled device and the second mobile device comprises the non-access point station (non-AP STA).

33. The method of claim 32 wherein the trigger message includes a mobile ID identifying the non-AP STA.

34. The method of claim 32 further comprising transmitting a trigger response message in response to the trigger message.

35. The method of claim 34 wherein the trigger response message further includes at least one of a mobile ID or a network identifier that identifies a network to which the WLAN is connected to or to which the WLAN is associated with.
