Personalization of news articles based on news sources

1. A method of providing news, comprising:

receiving, by a processor, a request for news articles from a user;

identifying, by the processor, a geographic location of the requesting user;

accessing, by the processor, user logs comprising other users' prior selections of news articles;

identifying, by the processor, from the user logs, sources of news items selected by other users with respective geographic locations that are determined to match the requesting user's geographic location;

eliminating, by the processor, news sources that are popular across a plurality of user groups;

selecting, by the processor subsequent to the elimination, a subset of the news sources as preferred news sources for obtaining relevant news items;

obtaining, by the processor, the relevant news items from the selected news sources; and

transmitting, by the processor, the relevant news items for presentation to the requesting user.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein

the subset of new sources comprising news sources that publish news items associated with the geographic location of the requesting user.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

selecting by the processor, a subset of the news sources based on profile data of the requesting user comprising age, gender and declared interests in addition to the geographic location of the requesting user.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising, determining that the requesting user is logged in and the geographic location and the profile data is obtained from information explicitly provided by the requesting user.

5. The method of claim 1 , the geographic location of the requesting user is derived from one of an IP address or GPS information of a device employed by the requesting user.

6. The method of claim 1 , the user logs further comprise the requesting user's prior selections of news items.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, ranking the retrieved news items based on temporal criteria.

8. A computing device, comprising:

a processor;

a storage medium for tangibly storing thereon program logic for executing by the processor, the program logic comprising:

receiving logic, executed by the processor, for receiving a request for news articles from a user;

identifying logic, executed by the processor, for identifying a geographic location of the requesting user;

accessing logic, executed by the processor, for accessing user logs comprising other users' prior selections of news articles;

identifying logic, executed by the processor, for identifying from the user logs, sources of news items selected by other users with respective geographic locations that are determined to match the requesting user's geographic location;

eliminating logic, executed by the processor, for eliminating news sources that are popular across a plurality of user groups;

selecting logic, executed by the processor, for selecting a subset of the news sources as preferred news sources for obtaining relevant news items;

obtaining logic, executed by the processor, for obtaining the relevant news items from the selected sources of news items; and

transmitting logic, executed by the processor, for transmitting the relevant news items for presentation to the requesting user.

9. The device of claim 8 ,

wherein the subset of new sources comprise news sources that publish news items associated with the geographic location of the requesting user.

10. The device of claim 8 , the identifying logic further comprising, logic for identifying as the geographic location of the requesting user, a DMA (Designated Market Area) associated with an IP (Internet Protocol) address of a client device employed the requesting user.

11. The device of claim 8 , the storage medium further comprising user logs that comprise the selections made by other users and the respective profile data of the other users.

12. The device of claim 11 , further comprising, a feedback module that, in association with the processor, receives the user's selections of the relevant news items for storage to the user logs.

13. The device of claim 11 , further comprising, a computation module that, in association with the processor, identifies a plurality of user groups based on user attributes from the user logs, eliminates news sources that are commonly popular across the plurality of user groups and determines news sources that are particularly popular among each of the plurality of user groups.

14. A computer-readable storage medium tangibly storing thereon computer program

instructions capable of being executed by a computer processor, the computer program instructions defining the steps of:

receiving, by a processor, a request for news articles from a user;

determining, by the processor, a geographic location of a user;

accessing, by the processor, user logs comprising other users prior selections of news articles;

identifying, by the processor, from the user logs, sources of news items selected by other users with respective geographic locations that are determined to match the user's geographic location;

eliminating, by the processor, news sources that are popular across a plurality of user groups;

selecting, by the processor subsequent to the elimination, a subset of the news sources as preferred news sources for obtaining relevant news items;

obtaining, by the processor, the relevant news items from the selected news sources; and

transmitting, by the processor, the relevant news items for presentation to the user.

15. The medium of claim 14 , the instructions further defining the step of, obtaining the geographic location and the profile data from information explicitly provided by the user when the user is logged in.

16. The medium of claim 14 , the instructions further defining the step of, obtaining the geographic location of the user from an IP address of a device employed by the user.

17. The medium of claim 14 , the instructions further defining the step of, deriving, by the processor, the geographic location of the user from GPS information of a device employed by the user.

18. The medium of claim 14 , the instructions further defining the step of, eliminating, by the processor, news sources that are popular across a plurality of user groups for obtaining the relevant news items.

19. The medium of claim 14 , the instructions further defining the step of, receiving, by the processor, the user's selections of the relevant news items.

20. The medium of claim 19 , the instructions further defining the step of, storing, by the processor, the user's selections to the user logs.
