Abstract

Vitrectomy probes and system related thereto are disclosed herein. The disclosure describes various example vitrectomy probes having an adjustable cutting port size. Various example features are described for adjusting the size of the cutting port. Further, the disclosure provides examples for adjusting the size of the cutter port while the vitrectomy probe is in operation.

Claims (41)

1. A vitrectomy probe comprising:

a housing;

a chamber formed in the housing;

a cutter extending longitudinally from a first end of the housing, the cutter comprising:

an outer cutting member coupled to the housing;

an interior assembly comprising an inner cutting member slideable within the outer cutting member, the interior assembly slideable between a retracted position and an extended position; and

an adjustable port, a size of the adjustable port defined by an edge of an opening formed in the outer cutting member and an end surface of the inner cutting member when the inner cutting member is in a fully retracted position;

a motor operable to reciprocate the interior assembly;

an arrangement comprising:

a piston disposed in the chamber and moveably therein, the piston comprising a first geared surface; and

a first gear operably engaged with the first geared surface of the piston and rotatable in a first rotational direction in response to movement of the piston in a first direction and rotatable in a second rotational direction in response to movement of the piston in a second direction opposite the first direction;

a stroke limiter threadably engaged with the housing and configured to engage one of an end of the interior assembly or a surface of the motor to define the size of the adjustable port, the stroke limiter moveable in a third direction to decrease a size of the adjustable port and moveably in a fourth direction opposite the third direction to increase a size of the adjustable port, the stroke limiter comprising a geared surface operably engaged with the first gear, the stroke limiter moveable in the third direction in response to a movement of the piston in the first direction and moveable in the fourth direction in response to a movement of the piston in the second direction.

2. The vitrectomy probe of claim 1 , wherein the arrangement further comprises a biasing member, the biasing member configured to bias the piston in the second direction.

3. The vitrectomy probe of claim 2 , wherein the biasing member is a spring.

4. The vitrectomy probe of claim 2 , wherein the piston is displaceable in the first direction in response to a pneumatic pressure applied to the piston.

5. The vitrectomy probe of claim 1 , wherein the inner cutting member comprises a lumen, wherein the interior assembly further comprises a passage in communication with the lumen of the inner cutting member.

6. The vitrectomy probe of claim 5 , wherein the interior assembly extends through and is coupled to the motor.

7. The probe of claim 6 , wherein the passage extends through the motor.

8. The probe of claim 6 , further comprising a conduit comprising a passage, the passage of the conduit in fluid communication with the passage of the interior assembly.

9. The probe of claim 1 , wherein the motor comprises a diaphragm and wherein the diaphragm is configured to oscillate in response to a pneumatic pressure applied to opposing sides of the diaphragm.

10. The vitrectomy probe of claim 1 , wherein the first direction and the second direction have a component that is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the interior assembly.

11. A vitrectomy probe comprising:

a housing;

a cutter extending longitudinally from a first end of the housing, the cutter comprising:

an outer cutting member coupled to the housing;

an interior assembly comprising an inner cutting member slideable within the outer cutting member, the interior assembly slideable between a retracted position and an extended position; and

an adjustable port, a size of the adjustable port defined by an edge of an opening formed in the outer cutting member and an end surface of the inner cutting member when the inner cutting member is in a fully retracted position;

a motor operable to reciprocate the interior assembly;

an arrangement comprising:

a piston moveably relative to the interior assembly, the piston comprising a first geared surface; and

a first gear operably engaged with the first geared surface of the piston and rotatable in a first rotational direction in response to movement of the piston in a first direction and rotatable in a second rotational direction in response to movement of the piston in a second direction opposite the first direction;

a stroke limiter threadably engaged with the housing and configured to engage one of an end of the interior assembly or a surface of the motor to define the size of the adjustable port, the stroke limiter moveable in a third direction to decrease a size of the adjustable port and moveably in a fourth direction opposite the third direction to increase a size of the adjustable port, the stroke limiter comprising a geared surface operably engaged with the first gear, the stroke limiter moveable in the third direction in response to a movement of the piston in the first direction and moveable in the fourth direction in response to a movement of the piston in the second direction.

12. The vitrectomy probe of claim 11 , wherein the arrangement further comprises a biasing member, the biasing member configured to bias the piston in the second direction.

13. The vitrectomy probe of claim 12 , wherein the biasing member is a spring.

14. The vitrectomy probe of claim 12 , wherein the piston is displaceable in the first direction in response to a pneumatic pressure applied to the piston.

15. The vitrectomy probe of claim 11 , wherein the inner cutting member comprises a lumen, wherein the interior assembly further comprises a passage in communication with the lumen of the inner cutting member.

16. The vitrectomy probe of claim 15 , wherein the interior assembly extends through and is coupled to the motor.

17. The vitrectomy probe of claim 11 , wherein the stroke limiter defines a passage, wherein the interior assembly extends through the passage of the stroke limiter.

18. The probe of claim 15 , further comprising a conduit comprising a passage, wherein the conduit is coupled to the end of the interior assembly, and wherein the passage of the conduit is in fluid communication with the passage of the interior assembly.

19. The probe of claim 11 , wherein the motor comprises a diaphragm and wherein the diaphragm is configured to oscillate in response to a pneumatic pressure applied to opposing sides of the diaphragm.

20. The vitrectomy probe of claim 11 , wherein the first direction and the second direction have a component that is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the interior assembly.
