Abstract

A wafer-shaped hollow fiber module adapted for in-line use in a piping system. The piping system may include two standard bolted flange connections, and at least one wafer-shaped hollow fiber module sealed between the two standard bolted flange connections. The wafer shaped hollow fiber module includes: a cylindrical housing having an open end and a closed end having a first sealing surface and an inlet port; at least one side port through the cylindrical housing; an end cap united to the open end having a second sealing surface and an outlet port.

Claims (38)

1. A method of treating a fluid stream comprising the steps of:

providing at least one wafer-shaped hollow fiber module comprising:

a cylindrical housing having an open end and a closed end;

said closed end having a first sealing surface and an inlet port;

at least one side port through said cylindrical housing;

an end cap united to said open end;

said end cap having a second sealing surface and an outlet port;

a stack of membrane mats within said cylindrical housing comprising a plurality of hollow fiber membranes;

a potting material bonding said membrane mats to each other and simultaneously bonding one end of said stack to said closed end of said cylindrical housing and bonding the other end of said stack to said end cap, thereby defining an internal chamber and at least one external chamber within said housing; and

said inlet port and said outlet port being in communication with said internal chamber;

installing said wafer-shaped hollow fiber module into a new or existing piping system between two standard bolted flange connections, wherein said two standard bolted flange connections being connected to each other by a plurality of bolts where said wafer-shaped hollow fiber module being positioned between said two standard bolted flange connections and in between said plurality of bolts;

attaching a first fluid line to the side ports of said wafer-shaped hollow fiber module;

attaching a second fluid line to said new or existing piping system where said second fluid line communicating with said internal chamber of said wafer-shaped hollow fiber module via a conduit connected said standard bolted flange connections; and

moving a fluid stream through said wafer-shaped hollow fiber module thereby treating said fluid stream.

2. The method of treating a fluid stream of claim 1 further comprising the step of removing entrained gases or bubbles from a liquid, or filtering a liquid having the steps of:

attaching said first fluid line to a vacuum or partial vacuum; and

moving said liquid through said second fluid line;

whereby, removing entrained gases, debubbling, or filtering said liquid via said vacuum or partial vacuum on said side ports.

3. The method of treating a fluid stream of claim 1 further comprising the step of sweeping a gas through a liquid having the steps of:

passing a gas through said first fluid line from one side port through said hollow fibers and out of the other side port; and

moving a liquid through said second fluid line;

where, said wafer-shaped hollow fiber module comprising:

two side ports in communication with two separate external chambers;

whereby, said gas being swept through said liquid by said gas flowing through said hollow fibers.

4. The method of treating a fluid stream of claim 1 further comprising the step of adding a gas to a liquid having the steps of:

said wafer-shaped hollow fiber module comprising:

two side ports in communication with two separate external chambers;

passing a pressurized gas through said first fluid line from one side port through said hollow fibers and out of the other side port; and

moving a liquid through said second fluid line;

whereby, said pressurized gas being added to said liquid by said gas flowing through said hollow fibers.

5. The method of treating a fluid stream of claim 1 further comprising the step of removing CO 2 , SO 2 , NO 2 /NO (NO x ), Ammonia, H 2 S, or other undesirable species from air or biogas having the steps of:

moving a liquid through said first fluid line;

passing air or biogas through said second line;

whereby, CO 2 , SO 2 , NO 2 /NO (NO x ), Ammonia, H 2 S, or other undesirable species being removed from said air or biogas via said liquid through said hollow fibers via said liquid.

6. The method of treating a fluid stream of claim 1 further comprising the step of humidifying or dehumidifying a fluid stream having the steps of:

moving a liquid through said first fluid line; and

passing a gas stream through said second fluid line;

whereby, said liquid humidifying or dehumidifying said fluid stream by moving through said hollow fibers.
