Abstract

A compression and distraction shaft assembly applies compression and distraction to bones including vertebrae. Shaft A assembly and shaft B assembly are attached together via a polyaxial fulcrum. The polyaxial fulcrum allows all rotational degrees of freedom between shaft A assembly and shaft B assembly. Such fulcrum, during compression and distraction, does not impart ancillary stresses or motion to vertebrae. An hourglass-shaped bore for engaging pliers is formed in approximately middle of both the shaft A assembly and the shaft B assembly. Distraction pliers having cylindrical tips are used to apply distraction to vertebrae. Once handles are pressed to impart an appropriate amount of distraction to the vertebrae, they are locked in this position. Compression pliers having cylindrical tips are used to apply compression to vertebrae. Once handles are pressed to impart an appropriate amount of compression to the vertebrae, they are locked in this position.

Claims (29)

1. A system for displacing vertebral bodies, comprising:

a first shaft having a first end and a second end, the first end of the first shaft being adapted to connect to a first pedicle screw mounted to a first vertebra of a spine, wherein the first shaft has an engagement portion located between the first and second ends of the first shaft, the engagement portion of the first shaft being adapted to engage a first arm of a displacement device so as to form a first polyaxial pivot between the first shaft and the first arm; and

a second shaft having a first end and a second end, the first end of the second shaft being adapted to connect to a second pedicle screw mounted to a second vertebra of the spine, wherein the second shaft has an engagement portion located between the first and second ends of the second shaft, the engagement portion of the second shaft being adapted to engage a second arm of the displacement device so as to form a second polyaxial pivot between the second shaft and the second arm;

wherein each of the first and second polyaxial pivots permit the respective first and second shafts to pivot with respect to the respective first and second arms of the displacement device about a plurality of intersecting axes while the first and second arms of the displacement device are imparting forces to the respective first and second shafts for displacing the first and second vertebrae with respect to one another.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the displacement device is a compression device adapted to compress together the first and second shafts.

3. The system of claim 2 , further comprising the compression device, wherein the compression device comprises compression pliers.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the displacement device is a distraction device adapted to distract apart the first and second shafts.

5. The system of claim 4 , further comprising the distraction device, wherein the distraction device comprises distraction pliers.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the engagement portions of the first and second shafts are adapted to removably engage the respective first and second arms of the displacement device.

7. The system of claim 6 , further comprising a plurality of the displacement devices, each of the displacement devices having first and second arms, wherein one of the displacement devices is a compression device adapted to compress together the first and second shafts, wherein another one of the displacement devices is a distraction device adapted to distract apart the first and second shafts, and wherein the engagement portions of the first and second shafts are adapted to removably engage the respective first and second arms of the compression device and removably engage the respective first and second arms of the distraction device.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the engagement portion of the first shaft comprises an opening adapted to receive a portion of the first arm of the displacement device, and wherein the engagement portion of the second shaft comprises an opening adapted to receive a portion of the second arm of the displacement device.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the opening of the engagement portion of the first shaft defines an hourglass shape, and wherein the opening of the engagement portion of the second shaft defines an hourglass shape.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second end of the first shaft and the second end of the second shaft are adapted to mate with each other.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the second end of the first shaft and the second end of the second shaft are adapted to mate with each other so as to form a polyaxial fulcrum about which the first shaft and the second shaft can pivot with respect to one another.

12. A method of displacing vertebral bodies, comprising:

connecting a first end of a first shaft to a first pedicle screw mounted to a first vertebra of a spine;

connecting a first end of a second shaft to a second pedicle screw mounted to a second vertebra of the spine;

engaging a first arm of a displacement device to the first shaft;

engaging a second arm of the displacement device to the second shaft; and

imparting forces to the first and second shafts with the respective first and second arms of the displacement device to displace the first and second vertebrae with respect to one another, while simultaneously permitting the first shaft to pivot with respect to the first arm of the displacement device about a plurality of intersecting axes and permitting the second shaft to pivot with respect to the second arm of the displacement device about a plurality of intersecting axes.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the step of imparting forces to the first and second shafts with the respective first and second arms of the displacement device comprises compressing together the first and second shafts with the first and second arms.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the step of imparting forces to the first and second shafts with the respective first and second arms of the displacement device comprises distracting apart the first and second shafts with the first and second arms.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the step of engaging the first arm of the displacement device to the first shaft comprises removably engaging the first arm of the displacement device to the first shaft, and wherein the step of engaging the second arm of the displacement device to the second shaft comprises removably engaging the second arm of the displacement device to the second shaft.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising providing a second displacement device having a first arm and a second arm, wherein the first arm of the second displacement device is adapted to engage the first shaft so as to impart a force to the first shaft to displace the first and second vertebrae with respect to one another, and wherein the second arm of the second displacement device is adapted to engage the second shaft so as to impart a force to the second shaft to displace the first and second vertebrae with respect to one another.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the step of engaging the first arm of the displacement device to the first shaft comprises engaging the first arm of the displacement device to an engagement portion of the first shaft, wherein the step of engaging the second arm of the displacement device to the second shaft comprises engaging the second arm of the displacement device to an engagement portion of the second shaft, and wherein the first and second arms of the second displacement device are adapted to engage the respective engagement portions of the first and second shafts so as to impart forces to the first and second shafts to displace the first and second vertebrae with respect to one another.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein one of the displacement device and the second displacement device is a compression device adapted to compress together the first and second shafts, and wherein the other of the displacement device and the second displacement device is a distraction device adapted to distract apart the first and second shafts.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the step of engaging the first arm of the displacement device to the first shaft comprises inserting a portion of the first arm of the displacement device into an opening on the first shaft, and wherein the step of engaging the second arm of the displacement device to the second shaft comprises inserting a portion of the second arm of the displacement device into an opening on the second shaft.
