Abstract

A light source ( 10 ) comprises a light engine ( 16 ), a base ( 24 ), a power conversion circuit ( 30 ) and an enclosure ( 22 ). The light engine ( 16 ) comprises at least one LED ( 12 ) disposed on a platform ( 14 ). The platform ( 14 ) is adapted to directly mate with the base ( 24 ) which a standard incandescent bulb light base. Phosphor ( 44 ) receives the light generated by the at least one LED ( 12 ) and converts it to visible light. The enclosure ( 22 ) has a shape of a standard incandescent lamp.

Claims (29)

1 - 23 . (canceled)

24 . A light source comprising:

a bulb-shaped enclosure having a spheroidal shape defining a first bulb portion and an elongate shape defining a second bulb portion, the second bulb portion having a first end extending from the periphery of the first bulb portion and a second end opposite the first end;

a base adjacent the second end of the second bulb portion;

a light engine including at least one LED for directing light toward the interior of the first bulb portion, and

a conversion circuit housed in at least a portion of the base for supplying electric power to the light engine.

25 . The light source according to claim 24 , further comprising an active cooling unit mounted to the base for dissipating thermal energy away from the at least one LED.

26 . The light source according to claim 24 , further comprising a heat sink in thermal communication with the at least one LED.

27 . The light source according to claim 26 , wherein the heat sink comprises a plurality of heat radiating fins disposed around the periphery of the heat sink.

28 . The light source of claim 24 , wherein the at least one LED is integral to said enclosure.

29 . The light source of claim 24 , wherein said light engine comprises a single substantially planar array of multiple LEDs.

30 . The light source according to claim 24 , further including a wavelength converting material.

31 . The light source of claim 30 , wherein the wavelength converting material receives light of a first wavelength generated by the light engine and converts at least a portion of said light of a first wavelength to light of a second wavelength.

32 . The light source of claim 24 , wherein the base is one of a screw base and wedge base.

33 . The light source of claim 24 , wherein the at least one LED is adjacent to said first end of the second bulb portion and positioned proximate the periphery of the first bulb portion.

34 . An LED light source comprising:

a platform adapted to directly mount into a base;

a bulb-shaped transparent enclosure having a spheroidal shape defining a first bulb portion and an elongate shape defining a second bulb portion, said second bulb portion being adapted to extend from said first bulb portion towards said base;

one or more LEDs; wherein said one or more LEDs are positioned at the intersection of said first bulb portion and said second bulb portion, proximate the periphery of the bulb-shaped enclosure and configured to direct light to the interior of said first bulb portion; and

a wavelength converting material adapted to receive light of a first wavelength generated by the one or more LEDs and convert at least a portion of said light of a first wavelength to light of a second wavelength.

35 . The LED light source according to claim 34 , wherein said wavelength converting material is at least one of disposed on said one or more LEDs, coated on an inside surface or the enclosure, coated on an outside surface of the enclosure, and contained within the enclosure.

36 . The LED light source according to claim 34 , wherein said wavelength converting material comprises a phosphor material.

37 . The LED light source according to claim 36 , wherein said phosphor material includes at least two phosphors.

38 . The LED light source according to claim 34 , wherein the light emitted by the one or more LEDS is UV light.

39 . The LED light source according to claim 36 , wherein the wavelength converting material is capable of converting the UV light emitted by the one or more LEDs into at least one of visible and white light.

40 . An LED lighting system, comprising:

a light engine comprising one or more LEDs mounted to a platform;

a bulb-shaped enclosure having a first generally spherical portion and a second generally elongated portion extending from said first portion, wherein the diameter of the first portion is twice the diameter of the second portion; and

a wavelength converting material adapted to receive light of a first wavelength generated by the one or more LEDs and convert at least a portion of said light of a first wavelength to at least one of white and visible light, wherein said light engine is located at a position within said second portion, proximate to the periphery of said first portion.
