Abstract

A system has a print head to dispense ink onto a print surface to form a printed image, a molding surface to contact the ink to form an informational image in at least the surface of the ink, and a radiation source to solidify the ink into the printed and informational images. A method includes dispensing ink onto a print medium to form a printed image, pressing a molding surface onto the printed image to transfer an informational image onto the printed image, and solidify the ink into the printed and informational images.

Claims (17)

1. A method, comprising:

dispensing ink onto a print medium to form a printed image;

pressing a molding surface onto the printed image to transfer an informational image onto the printed image, wherein pressing a molding surface comprises:

pressing the molding surface onto the printed image at a first pressure; using a first light source to project the informational image onto the print medium in at least one selected region of the printed image to solidify the ink in the selected pressing the molding surface onto the print medium at a second pressure; solidifying the ink in a second region by projecting a second light source onto the printed image; and solidify the ink into the printed and informational images.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming the informational image.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein forming the informational image comprises one of: mechanically printing the molded image into the molding surface; pressing the molded image into the molding surface; forming the informational image into one of a photo-sensitive or shape-memory polymer; inkjet printing a polymer onto the molding surface.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein forming the information image comprises forming the information image into a shape-memory polymer and exposing the shape-memory polymer to a light source after solidifying the ink to erase the informational image.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein forming the informational image comprises writing the molded image into a photo-sensitive polymer using an infrared laser and heating the photo-sensitive polymer and pressing the polymer to remove molded image after solidifying the ink.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein using the first light source comprises using a high intensity flash lamp.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein using the first light source comprises moving the first light source to move the informational image in conjunction with movement of the print medium.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein using the first light source comprises moving the informational image with a scanning mirror in conjunction with movement of the print medium.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein dispensing the ink comprises using one of an ink jet printing, offset printing, flexography, or screen printing.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein dispensing the ink comprises:

dispensing at least one colored ink;

dispensing a substantially clear ink to cover at least regions of the print surface not covered by the colored ink; and

wherein pressing the molding surface includes pressing the molding surface into the regions covered by the clear ink.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein dispensing the clear ink comprises one of either dispensing the clear ink only in the regions not covered by the colored ink, or dispensing clear ink over the entire print surface.
