Abstract

An item of information ( 212 ) is transmitted to a distal computer ( 220 ), translated to a different sense modality and/or language ( 222 ), and in substantially real time, and the translation ( 222 ) is transmitted back to the location ( 211 ) from which the item was sent. The device sending the item is preferably a wireless device, and more preferably a cellular or other telephone ( 210 ). The device receiving the translation is also preferably a wireless device, and more preferably a cellular or other telephone, and may advantageously be the same device as the sending device. The item of information ( 212 ) preferably comprises a sentence of human of speech having at least ten words, and the translation is a written expression of the sentence. All of the steps of transmitting the item of information, executing the program code, and transmitting the translated information preferably occurs in less than 60 seconds of elapsed time.

Claims (25)

1. A system for operating a target device using a spoken command received by a mobile device, comprising:

a service computing device, including a computing device and a transmitter, that is distal to both the target device and the mobile device and that is configured to:

receive, from the mobile device, information derived from the spoken command and, in response to the receiving of information, translate the information into a device command for operating the target device, in response to the mobile device receiving an input of spoken natural language that includes the spoken command,

translate the information into a device command that is formatted to a control language that is executable by the target device, and

transmit, via the transmitter, the device command for execution by the target device to the mobile device, wherein the transmitted device command is transmitted via the transmitter to the target device via the mobile device.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the target device is not a cell phone.

3. The system of claim 1 ,

wherein the mobile device is a cell phone; and

wherein the target device is a different cell phone from the cell phone that receives the spoken command.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the target device comprises a household appliance.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the target device is wirelessly coupled to the service computing device via a network.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is wirelessly coupled to the service computing device.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the target device is wirelessly coupled to the mobile device.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the target device is coupled to the mobile device using a wired connection.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the device command is rendered by the target device using an image.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the device command is rendered by the target device using text.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the device command is rendered by the target device by printing or displaying a color.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the device command is rendered by the target device using sound.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is the target device.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the target device and the mobile device are not distal to each other.

15. A system for operating a target device using a spoken command received by a mobile device, comprising:

a service computing device, including a computing device and a transmitter, that is distal to both the target device and the mobile device and that is configured to:

receive, from the mobile device, information derived from the spoken command and, in response to the receiving information, translate the information into a device command for operating the target device, in response to the mobile device receiving an input of spoken natural language that includes the spoken command,

translate the information into a device command that is formatted to a control language that is executable by the target device, and

transmit, via the transmitter, the device command for execution by the target device to the mobile device, wherein the transmitted device command is transmitted via the transmitter to the target device via the mobile device, and wherein the target device and the mobile device are not distal to each other.
