Abstract

A telecommunication method, server and system that route an outbound telephone communication initiated by a wireless remote device through an enterprise communication network. The system also routes an incoming call to a device associated with an enterprise communication network to a plurality of telephony devices including wireless devices and other remote devices.

Claims (35)

1. A method of routing a communication performed by a telecommunications server, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving over a first communication path an incoming call to a primary device number;

retrieving a first connection number for a remote device associated with said primary device number;

transmitting a first data signal to the remote device, the data signal inquiring whether the incoming call is to be accepted at the remote device; receiving a second data signal from the remote device;

determining whether the incoming call is accepted based on the second data signal; and

if the incoming call is accepted, establishing a second communication path to the remote device and connecting the first and second paths such that the incoming call is routed to the remote device,

wherein the second communication path is not established if the incoming call is not accepted; and wherein the transmitting step comprises transmitting an electronic mail message comprising the first data signal to the remote device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein if the incoming call is not accepted, said method further comprises diverting the incoming call to an enterprise voicemail box associated with the primary device number.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said transmitting step comprises transmitting a SIP protocol message comprising the first data signal to the remote device.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting a telephone signal to an enterprise telephone number associated with the primary device number via a third communication path.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein said step of transmitting the first data signal and said step of transmitting the telephone signal occur substantially simultaneously.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein said step of transmitting the first data signal and said step of transmitting the telephone signal occur sequentially.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said connecting step comprises bridging the first and second communication paths.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising authenticating a user of the remote device prior to connecting the first and second communication paths.

9. An apparatus for connecting a first call placed to a first device to a second device, the first device being associated with an enterprise network and a first device number, said apparatus comprising:

a computer readable storage medium, said computer readable storage medium storing a second device number associated with the first device number and corresponding to the second device; and

a processor coupled to said computer readable storage medium, said processor adapted to retrieve the second device number from the computer readable storage medium upon detecting the first call over a first communication path, said processor being further adapted to transmit a first data signal to the second device, and if the processor receives a second data signal indicating that the first call is accepted, the processor is adapted to establish a second communication path to the second device and connect the first and second paths such that the first call is routed to the second device instead of the first device; and wherein the second device comprises a mobile device and said processor provides an electronic mail message to the mobile device inquiring whether the first call is to be accepted.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein said processor provides a SIP protocol message to the mobile device inquiring whether the first call is to be accepted.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the second device comprises a cellular device and said processor provides a text message to the mobile device inquiring whether the first call is to be accepted.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein said processor further transmits a telephonic signal to the first device number via a third communication path.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the first data signal and the telephonic signal are transmitted substantially simultaneously.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the first data signal and the telephonic signal are transmitted sequentially.

15. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the first and second communication paths are circuit switched communication paths.

16. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the first and second communication paths are packet switched communication paths.

17. A telecommunications server configured to:

receive over a first communication path an incoming call to a primary device number; retrieve a first connection number for a remote device associated with said primary device number;

transmit an electronic mail message comprising a first data signal to the remote device, the data signal inquiring whether the incoming call is to be accepted at the remote device; receive a second data signal from the remote device;

determine whether the incoming call is accepted based on the second data signal; and

if the incoming call is accepted, establish a second communication path to the remote device and connect the first and second paths such that the incoming call is routed to the remote device instead of an enterprise telephone associated with the primary device number.

18. The server of claim 17 , wherein the second communication path is not established if the incoming call is not accepted.

19. The server of claim 17 , wherein if the incoming call is not accepted, the server is configured to divert the incoming call to an enterprise voicemail box associated with the primary device number.

20. The server of claim 17 , wherein said server is further configured to transmit a telephone signal to the enterprise device via a third communication path.

21. The server of claim 20 , wherein said server is configured to transmit the first data signal and the telephone signal substantially simultaneously.

22. The server of claim 17 , wherein said server is configured to authenticate a user of the remote device prior to establishing the second communication path.

23. The server of claim 17 , wherein the first and second communication paths are circuit switched communication paths.
