Abstract

A metal cutting tool has a supporting tool, which has a recess for accommodating a cutting plate. The cutting plate is provided with a clamping trough, which is held in the supporting tool by a clamping claw. The clamping claw is fixed against the supporting tool by a clamping screw. A pressure piece is placed on the clamping claw and its underside facing the cutting plate is provided with a cam, which is in contact with the clamping trough and the clamping claw pulls the pressure piece toward the clamping screw.

Claims (32)

1. A metal-cutting tool comprising

a supporting tool which has a recess to accommodate a cutting insert plate comprising a clamping trough held in the supporting tool by a clamping claw, wherein the clamping claw is fixed on the supporting tool with a clamping screw, and

a pressure piece arranged on the clamping claw which comprises a cam on an underside thereof which faces the cutting insert plate which is in contact with the clamping trough, wherein the clamping claw pulls the pressure piece in the direction of the clamping screw, wherein the clamping trough is formed in a circular shape and in the center has a spherical or circular elevation, and wherein the cam comprises a circular ring that is adapted thereto and tightly engages into the clamping trough while surrounding the elevation.

2. A cutting tool according to claim 1 , wherein the clamping claw has on an underside located above the pressure piece a spherical elevation which engages into a spherical depression on the pressure piece.

3. A cutting tool according to claim 2 , wherein the radius of the spherical elevation on the clamping claw is greater than the radius of the spherical depression in the pressure piece.

4. A cutting tool according to claim 1 , wherein the pressure piece has a raised part on a front side thereof to protect the clamping claw from impinging filings.

5. A cutting tool according to claim 1 , wherein the pressure piece comprises a wear-resistant material.

6. A cutting tool according to claim 1 , wherein the clamping claw is guided on the supporting tool by an incline with a form of clamping-force limitation.

7. A cutting tool according to claim 5 , wherein the wear-resistant material is selected from the group consisting of hard metal, HSS and a ceramic.

8. A cutting insert comprising a plate having a clamping trough, wherein the clamping trough is formed in a circular shape and in the center has a spherical or circular elevation.

9. A cutting insert according to claim 8 , formed as an indexable cutting plate.

10. An apparatus comprising a cutting insert plate having a clamping trough, wherein the clamping trough is formed in a circular shape and in the center has a spherical or circular elevation in a cutting tool according to claim 1 .

11. A cutting insert according to claim 8 , wherein the elevation lies above a trough bottom and below the top of the cutting insert plate.

12. A cutting insert for a cutting tool, comprising:

a top surface terminating at a cutting edge,

a bottom surface,

a first clamping trough disposed in the top surface, the first clamping trough spaced from the cutting edge, and

a first spherical or circular elevation disposed within said clamping trough, the first elevation without a center hole,

wherein the first elevation has a first elevation surface on a plane lower than that of the top surface.

13. The cutting insert according to claim 12 , wherein the first clamping trough is centrally disposed in the top surface.

14. The cutting insert according to claim 13 , wherein the first clamping trough on the top surface extends into the cutting insert at a first outer diameter and terminates at the first clamping trough bottom.

15. The cutting insert of claim 13 , wherein the first elevation is centrally disposed within the first dimple bottom, the first elevation has an outer shape that extends from the trough bottom to the top surface to form an elevation wall.

16. The cutting insert according to claim 15 , wherein the elevation wall is formed by extending the elevation wall vertically from the trough bottom and terminates with the elevation surface.

17. A combination metal-cutting tool and cutting insert, the cutting insert having a clamping trough and a spherical or circular elevation disposed within the clamping trough, the spherical or circular elevation having an elevation wall and an elevation surface, comprising:

(a) a supporting tool including a cutting insert plate seat formed at a forward end thereof and having a bottom and at least one side wall for receiving the cutting insert, the supporting tool including a supporting tool bore formed between an inclined surface of the supporting tool and the cutting insert plate seat;

(b) a clamp arranged on the supporting tool, the clamp including a lower face with a bearing surface having a shaped lip and a clamp contour portion, the clamp having an aperture formed therethrough;

(c) a clamp screw inserted into the aperture of the clamp, the clamp screw having a threaded portion capable of being threaded onto the bore of the supporting tool and the aperture of the clamp to bring the clamp into engagement with the cutting insert, and wherein the shaped lip and clamp contour portion engages the elevation wall and the elevation surface of the cutting insert when the clamp is brought into pressing engagement with the cutting insert.

18. The combination of claim 17 , wherein the clamp securing bore is internally threaded.

19. The cutting insert according to claim 15 , wherein the outer shape is circular.

20. A cutting tool according to claim 5 , wherein the wear-resistant material is selected from the group consisting of hard metal and a ceramic.

21. A cutting tool according to claim 5 , wherein the wear-resistant material is a ceramic.

22. The cutting insert according to claim 16 , wherein the outer shape is circular.
