Abstract

A method and system for tracking the type and amount of data processed by a computer system. In one embodiment, a logging system tracks data processed by a conversion system so that differential billing of customers can be performed based on the type of data and the quality of service required to provide that data. The logging system is integrated as part of the conversion system that converts the data from a source format into a target format. As the data is converted by the conversion routines, the logging system logs the amount of data that is converted by the conversion routines. Thus, the logging system is able to track the data at each conversion routine, such as each level of a communications protocol.

Claims (11)

1 . A method for processing packets of a message by a computer system, the method comprising:

receiving a first packet of a message;

selecting one or more addresses based on the first packet of the message;

identifying a sequence of one or more conversion routines based on the one or more addresses;

creating a path based on the sequence of one or more conversion routines;

storing the path in computer memory so that the sequence does not need to be re-identified for subsequent packets of the message;

selecting one or more policies; and

processing the packets of the message using the path based on the one or more selected policies.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein the policy instructs the path to drop one or more messages.

3 . The method of claim 2 wherein the one or more messages are dropped based on the position of the one or more messages in a message queue.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising recording an amount of data processed by the path.
