Abstract

A pedicle screw comprises a head. A shaft is joined to the head. The shaft comprises a first threaded portion, a middle portion and a second threaded portion. The middle portion comprises a modified threaded portion being configured to mitigate damage to a patient's nerve root. A first marker is joinable to the shaft proximate the modified threaded portion. The first marker comprises a material being radiographically distinguishable from the shaft in which a placement of the modified threaded portion is observable.

Claims (13)

1. A pedicle screw comprising:

a head providing a base for attachment of a supporting spinal structure;

a shaft being joined to said head, said shaft comprising a first threaded portion, a middle portion and a second threaded portion, said middle portion comprising an unthreaded portion configured to mitigate damage to a patient's nerve root and wherein at least a portion of said shaft is threaded through the entire length of said shaft and wherein the outer surface of said shaft is continuous; and

a solid marker being joinable to said shaft proximate said unthreaded portion, said marker comprising a material being radiographically distinguishable from said shaft in which a placement of said unthreaded portion is observable and wherein said marker is on or within said shaft and bears a spatial relationship to said unthreaded portion and is positioned to enable observing the location of said unthreaded portion with respect to an associated pedicle nerve root and further wherein the first and second threaded portions are threaded around an entire circumference of said shaft.

2. The pedicle screw as recited in claim 1 , in which said head comprises a socket being configured for rotational engagement for driving the pedicle screw, said socket further being operable for indicating a rotational alignment of said unthreaded portion.

3. The pedicle screw as recited in claim 1 , in which said marker comprises a coating.

4. The pedicle screw as recited in claim 1 , in which the marker is internal to said shaft.

5. The pedicle screw as recited in claim 4 , in which the marker is within a channel in said shaft.

6. The pedicle screw as recited in claim 5 , in which said channel extends from said head through at least said middle portion of said shaft.

7. The pedicle screw as recited in claim 5 , in which said marker is removable from said channel.

8. The pedicle screw as recited in claim 5 in which said marker within the shaft is positioned with respect to the middle unthreaded portion to observe the depth the pedicle screw is installed in a pedicle to mitigate damage to a patient's nerve root.

A pedicle screw system comprising the pedicle screw of claim 1 in combination with a driver suitable for driving said screw into a pedicle, said driver having thereon a marker such that when the driver is engaged with the pedicle screw, said driver marker is aligned with the unthreaded portion of the pedicle screw.

10. The pedicle screw of claim 5 in which the marker is positioned on a wire that protrudes from the head of said screw, said marker and wire slidably joinable to said screw.
