Abstract

Embodiments of a tie plate sorter are disclosed wherein the tie plates are sorted and fed to an output device for further feeding to a tie plate distribution system. The tie plates may be oriented as needed. Exemplary methods are also provided.

Claims (29)

1. A tie plate sorter assembly, comprising:

a tie plate receiver having a first end and a second end;

at least one location which receives tie plates into said tie plate receiver;

said tie plate receiver having at least one side extending between said first and second ends defining an interior of said tie plate receiver wherein said tie plates are deposited;

said tie plate receiver having at least one aperture discharging tie plates;

a plurality of magnets disposed about said receiver adjacent to said at least one side of said receiver, to magnetically retain said tie plates and release said tie plates through said at least one aperture.

2. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 further comprising a mechanical structure to engage or disengage said plurality of magnets.

3. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 2 , said plurality of magnets retaining said tie plates in said receiver until said magnet is disengaged.

4. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 wherein said plurality of magnets are electromagnets.

5. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 4 wherein said plurality of magnets are actuated electrically.

6. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 further comprising a pocket wherein at least one of said plurality of tie plates is seated.

7. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 6 wherein each of said plurality of magnets are positioned adjacent to said pocket.

8. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 6 wherein said aperture is formed adjacent to said pocket.

9. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 wherein said plurality of magnets are actuated mechanically.

10. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 wherein said plurality of magnets are actuated depending on the position of said tie plate sorter.

11. A tie plate sorter assembly, comprising:

a tie plate receiver having a generally cylindrical shape including a first axial end and a second axial end;

an input location which receives tie plates to an interior of said tie plate receiver;

a plurality of circumferentially spaced pockets about said receiver;

a retaining mechanism located adjacent to said pockets to retain at least one of said tie plates in said pocket;

an aperture in said pocket such that said retaining mechanism selectively releases said at least one of said tie plates.

12. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 11 , said aperture discharging said at least one tie plate externally of said receiver.

13. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 12 further comprising a conveyor to receive said discharged at least one tie plate.

14. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 11 , said pockets extending in an axial direction.

15. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 11 wherein said at least one retaining mechanism is magnetic.

16. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 11 wherein said at least one retaining mechanism is electromagnetic.

17. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 11 wherein said at least one retaining mechanism is actuated depending on the position of said tie plate sorter.

18. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 11 wherein said at least one retaining mechanism is actuated electrically.

19. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 11 wherein said at least one retaining mechanism is actuated mechanically.
