Abstract

Provided is a modular pedicle screw assembly which includes various components that may be configured in various manners so as to provide different functionalities to the pedicle screw assembly. This advantageously decreases surgery time, reduces repetitive and tedious surgical steps, and allows for streamlining inventory of expensive medical equipment. In one embodiment, a pedicle screw assembly includes a pedicle screw, a rod holding element, an insert, a rod, and a set screw. The insert may have a uniplanar configuration which allows movement of the insert, prior to final attachment, in a plane of motion. The insert may optionally have a monoaxial configuration which prevents movement of the insert. A method is also provided for securing a rod to a pedicle screw assembly. Also provided is an assembly tool for use in assembling a pedicle screw assembly.

Claims (22)

1. An assembly system for use in assembling a pedicle screw assembly wherein the pedicle screw assembly includes a bone screw, a rod holding element, and an insert, wherein the rod holding element includes grooves and a threading area, wherein the insert includes a recessed area and the bone screw includes a head that fits within the recessed area, wherein the bone screw further includes a tool receiving area, and wherein the insert is disposed within the rod holding element, the assembly system comprising:

a body configured to fit within the rod holding element, the body having an upper surface and an opposed shoulder surface, wherein the shoulder surface of the body is configured to press against the insert and the bone screw head;

a bit connected to and extending from the shoulder surface of the body and configured to fit within the tool receiving area of the bone screw such that torsional movement of the bit imparts torsional force to the bone screw, wherein the bit extends from the shoulder surface of the body in a direction away from the upper surface of the body, and

a set screw having a plurality of threads configured for threaded engagement with the threading area of the rod holding element, the set screw having a bottom surface configured for engagement with the upper surface of the body, wherein the set screw is selectively rotatable relative to the threading area of the rod holding element to advance the set screw toward the body to exert a downward force on the body,

wherein the set screw is configured to exert a downward three on the body to push the body into a bottomed out position, and wherein in the bottomed out position, the body and the bit are configured to hold the bone screw in a final assembled position relative to the insert and rod holding element, wherein when the bone screw is held in the final assembled position, the body and the bit are configured to effect rotation of the entire pedicle screw assembly in response to application of torque to the set screw, and wherein the body and the bit are configured to prevent the bone screw from moving out of axis with respect to the rod holding element.

2. The assembly system according to claim 1 further comprising pins that are connected to the body and adapted to fit within the grooves of the rod holding element.

3. The assembly system according to claim 1 wherein the bit further comprises a hex shaped surface.

4. The assembly system according to claim 1 wherein the upper surface of the body is substantially planar.

5. The assembly system according to claim 1 wherein the shoulder surface of the body is substantially planar.

6. The assembly system according to claim 1 wherein the set screw is configured to receive torsional force from a driver, and wherein when the body and the bit hold the bone screw in the final assembled position, the body and the bit are configured to align the bone screw with a torsional force applied by the driver.

7. A method of assembling a pedicle screw assembly, comprising:

positioning an insert within a rod holding element, wherein the rod holding element includes grooves and a threading area, and wherein the insert includes a recessed area;

positioning a bone screw such that a head of the bone screw is disposed within the recessed area of the insert, wherein the bone screw includes a tool receiving area;

positioning a body within the rod holding element, the body having an upper surface and an opposed shoulder surface, wherein the shoulder surface of the body is configured to press against the insert and the bone screw head;

positioning a bit within the tool receiving area of the bone screw, the bit being connected to and extending from the shoulder surface of the body, wherein the bit extends from the shoulder surface of the body in a direction away from the upper surface of the body, and wherein torsional movement of the bit imparts torsional force to the bone screw;

selectively rotating a set screw relative to the threading area of the rod holding element to advance the set screw toward the body to exert a downward force on the body and push the body into a bottomed out position, the set screw having a plurality of threads configured for threaded engagement with the threading area of the rod holding element and a bottom surface configured for engagement with the upper surface of the body, wherein in the bottomed out position, the body and the bit are configured to hold the bone screw in a final assembled position relative to the insert and rod holding element; and

with the bone screw in the final assembled position, selectively applying torque to the set screw, wherein the body and the bit are configured to effect rotation of the entire pedicle screw assembly in response to the application of torque to the set screw, and wherein the body and the bit are configured to prevent the bone screw from moving out of axis with respect to the rod holding element.

8. The method according to claim 7 wherein the body comprises pins, and wherein the pins of the body are positioned within corresponding grooves of the rod holding element.

9. The method according to claim 7 wherein the bit has a hex shaped surface.

10. The method according to claim 7 wherein the upper surface of the body is substantially planar.

11. The method according to claim 7 wherein the shoulder surface of the body is substantially planar.

12. The method according to claim 7 further comprising applying torsional force to the set screw using a driver, and wherein when the bone screw is in the final assembled position, the body and the bit are configured to align the bone screw with a torsional force applied by the driver.
