Tissue thickness compensator comprised of a plurality of materials
View Patent ↗A tissue thickness compensator can comprise a plurality of fibers. Such fibers can include a plurality of first fibers comprised of a first material and a plurality of second fibers comprised of a second material. A tissue thickness compensator can comprise a plurality of layers wherein each layer can be comprised of one or more medicaments. Certain embodiments are disclosed herein for manufacturing a tissue thickness compensator comprising fibers, for example.
1. A compensator attachable to an anvil of a fastening instrument, wherein the anvil includes a forming surface, and wherein said compensator comprises:
a first layer comprised of first fibers and second fibers, wherein said first fibers are comprised of a first material and said second fibers are comprised of a second material, wherein said first material is different than said second material, and wherein said first fibers and said second fibers are present within said first layer according to a first ratio by quantity;
a second layer comprised of said first fibers and said second fibers, wherein said first fibers and said second fibers are present within said second layer according to a second ratio by quantity, and wherein said first ratio by quantity is different than said second ratio by quantity; and
an attachment portion configured to be attached to the anvil.
2. The compensator of claim 1 , wherein said first material comprises oxidized regenerated cellulose and said second material comprises an absorbable polymer.
3. The compensator of claim 1 , wherein said first ratio by quantity of said first fibers to said second fibers is approximately 4:1, and wherein said second ratio by quantity of said first fibers to said second fibers is approximately 1:4.
4. The compensator of claim 3 , wherein said first layer comprises a tissue-contacting surface, and wherein said second material comprises oxidized regenerated cellulose.
5. The compensator of claim 1 , wherein said second fibers are weaved within said first fibers in said first layer, and wherein said first fibers are weaved within said second fibers in said second layer.
6. The compensator of claim 1 , further comprising a medicament, wherein said medicament is absorbed within said first fibers.
7. A staple cartridge, comprising:
a cartridge body;
staples removably stored in said cartridge body; and
a compensator, comprising:
a first layer comprised of first fibers and second fibers, wherein said first fibers are comprised of a first material and said second fibers are comprised of a second material, wherein said first material is different than said second material, and wherein said first fibers and said second fibers are present within said first layer according to a first ratio by quantity; and
a second layer comprised of said first fibers and said second fibers, wherein said first fibers and said second fibers are present within said second layer according to a second ratio by quantity, and wherein said first ratio by quantity is different than said second ratio by quantity.
8. The staple cartridge of claim 7 , wherein said first material comprises oxidized regenerated cellulose and said second material comprises an absorbable polymer.
9. The staple cartridge of claim 7 , wherein said first ratio by quantity of said first fibers to said second fibers is approximately 4:1, and wherein said second ratio by quantity of said first fibers to said second fibers is approximately 1:4.
10. The staple cartridge of claim 9 , wherein said first layer comprises a tissue-contacting surface, and wherein said second material comprises oxidized regenerated cellulose.
11. The staple cartridge of claim 7 , wherein said second fibers are weaved within said first fibers in said first layer, and wherein said first fibers are weaved within said second fibers in said second layer.
12. The staple cartridge of claim 7 , further comprising a medicament, wherein said medicament is absorbed within said first fibers.
13. The staple cartridge of claim 7 , wherein said first layer comprises an annular layer, and wherein said second layer comprises an annular layer surrounding said first layer.
