Abstract

In various embodiments, a tissue thickness compensator can comprise a film body formed from a continuous extruded shape and, in addition, a fibrous medicament core.

Claims (50)

1. A compensator attachable to an anvil of a fastening instrument, wherein the anvil includes a forming surface, and wherein said compensator comprises:

a tube comprising an aperture, a first end, and a second end, wherein said first end and said second end have been sealed closed;

a yarn strand positioned within said aperture; and

an attachment portion configured to be attached to the anvil.

2. A compensator attachable to an anvil of a fastening instrument, wherein the anvil includes a forming surface, and wherein said compensator comprises:

a tube comprising an aperture, a first end, and a second end;

a yarn strand positioned within said aperture; and

an attachment portion configured to be attached to the anvil,

wherein said tube comprises a deflection joint.

3. A tissue thickness compensator, comprising:

a film body formed from a continuous extruded shape, wherein said continuous extruded shape comprises:

a first end;

a second end; and

a central aperture extending between said first end and said second end, wherein said continuous extruded shape is sealed at said first end and said second end; and

a fibrous medicament core.

4. A tissue thickness compensator, comprising:

a casing comprising a central aperture;

a fibrous material positioned within said central aperture; and

an attachment portion,

wherein said casing comprises a first end and a second end, and wherein said casing is sealed at said first end and said second end.

5. A compensator attachable to an anvil of a fastening instrument, wherein the anvil includes a forming surface arrangeable opposite a fastener cartridge jaw of the fastening instrument, and wherein said compensator comprises:

a tube comprising an aperture, a sidewall defining said aperture, a first end, and a second end, wherein said sidewall is disposed entirely immediate the anvil forming surface and the fastener cartridge jaw;

a yarn strand positioned within said aperture; and

an attachment portion configured to be attached to the anvil.

6. The compensator of claim 5 , wherein said yarn strand is comprised of oxidized regenerated cellulose.

7. The compensator of claim 5 , wherein said tube is comprised of a polymeric material.

8. The compensator of claim 5 , wherein said attachment portion comprises a first lateral wing configured to engage a first side of the anvil and a second lateral wing configured to engage a second side of the anvil.

9. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body comprising a deck;

staples removably stored in said cartridge body; and

a tissue thickness compensator positioned above said deck, comprising:

a film body formed from a continuous extruded shape; and

a fibrous medicament core positioned in said continuous extruded shape.

10. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 9 , wherein said continuous extruded shape comprises a first end, a second end, and a central aperture extending between said first end and said second end.

11. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 10 , wherein said fibrous medicament core is positioned in said central aperture.

12. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 9 , wherein said fibrous medicament core comprises a woven strand.

13. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 12 , wherein said woven strand comprises a plurality of micro-cuts.

14. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 12 , wherein said woven strand comprises a fluffed portion.

15. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body;

staples removably stored in said cartridge body; and

a tissue thickness compensator, comprising:

a casing comprising a central aperture;

a fibrous material positioned within said central aperture; and

an attachment portion, wherein said staples implant said casing and said fibrous material when said staples are ejected from said staple cartridge.

16. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 15 , wherein said casing comprises a mesh.

17. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 15 , wherein said casing comprises an outer surface, and wherein a plurality of apertures extend from said central aperture to said outer surface.

18. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 15 , wherein said fibrous material comprises a medicament.

19. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 15 , wherein said attachment portion comprises a first lateral wing and a second lateral wing.

20. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 15 , wherein said casing comprises a continuous extruded shape.
