Abstract

An anterior lumbar interbody graft (ALIG) inserter includes prongs at the tip of the inserter which can optionally grasp, and thus insert, anterior and anterior-lateral grafts.

Claims (22)

1. A tool useful for manipulating an anterior interbody graft, the tool comprising:

a handle section including a pair of handles movable toward and away from each other;

a head section including a pair of jaws movable toward and away from each other; and

an intermediate section joining the handle section to the head section, the intermediate section including at least one pivot connecting together the pair of handles and the pair of jaws so that movement of the handles causes movement of the jaws;

wherein each jaw includes a prong with a first thickness and a portion with a second thickness, the first thickness being smaller than the second thickness;

wherein each prong includes a tab at an end of the prong and extending away from the intermediate section at a non-zero angle;

wherein each jaw includes a shoulder where the first and second thicknesses meet; and

wherein the head section is configured and arranged so that the jaws have a fully open orientation and a fully closed orientation, the prongs being spaced apart and angling toward each other, and portions of the jaws at said shoulder touching each other, in the fully closed orientation.

2. A tool according to claim 1 , wherein the shoulder is non-linear and has a radius.

3. A tool according to claim 1 , wherein the prong has an inner surface that is roughened.

4. A tool according to claim 1 , wherein the tab extends away from the intermediate section at an angle of about 30 degrees.

5. A tool according to claim 1 , wherein the tab includes a tip furthest away from the handles which is offset from an end of the prong.

6. A tool according to claim 1 , wherein the head section, the intermediate section, and the handle section are mutually configured and arranged so that movement of the handles toward each other causes movement of the jaws toward each other.

7. A tool according to claim 1 , wherein the intermediate section includes a four-bar linkage having four pivots.

8. A method for manipulating an anterior interbody graft, the method comprising:

providing a tool including

a handle section including a pair of handles movable toward and away from each other,

a head section including a pair of jaws movable toward and away from each other, and

an intermediate section joining the handle section to the head section, the intermediate section including at least one pivot connecting together the pair of handles and the pair of jaws so that movement of the handles causes movement of the jaws,

wherein each jaw includes a prong with a first thickness and a portion with a second thickness, the first thickness being smaller than the second thickness, and

wherein each jaw includes a shoulder where the first and second thicknesses meet;

holding said anterior interbody graft with said tool such that said anterior interbody graft is only held between said prongs.
