Abstract

A nitric oxide delivery system, which includes a gas bottle having nitrogen dioxide in air, converts nitrogen dioxide to nitric oxide and employs a surface-active material, such as silica gel, coated with an aqueous solution of antioxidant, such as ascorbic acid. A nitric oxide delivery system may be used to generate therapeutic gas including nitric oxide for use in delivering the therapeutic gas to a mammal.

Claims (11)

1. A system for generating a therapeutic gas including nitric oxide for use in delivering the therapeutic gas to a mammal comprising:

a pressure regulator including a diffusion cell made of stainless steel or a plastic configured to be connected to a gas source including nitrogen dioxide and capable of providing gaseous nitrogen dioxide into an air flow; and

a receptacle configured to directly attach to the pressure regulator, the receptacle including an inlet, an outlet and an antioxidant, wherein the inlet is configured to receive the air flow and fluidly communicate the air flow to the outlet, such that the air flow contacts the antioxidant, which converts the gaseous nitrogen dioxide to nitric oxide, and wherein an outlet of the pressure regulator is the inlet of the receptacle.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the receptacle further comprises a surface-active material.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the antioxidant is included on the surface-active material.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the surface-active material is coated with an aqueous solution of the antioxidant.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the receptacle comprises a cartridge.

6. The system of claim 2 , wherein the surface-active material comprises a substrate that retains water.

7. The system of claim 2 , wherein the surface-active material comprises a silica gel.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the antioxidant comprises ascorbic acid.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the antioxidant comprises alpha tocopherol or gamma tocopherol.
