Abstract

An optical component for an LED lighting arrangement comprises: a transparent material having a concave surface and a coating of one or more photoluminescent (phosphor) materials on a part of the concave surface. The phosphor material emits photoluminescent light when illuminated by light of a wavelength in range 300 to 500 nm. The component can comprise a spherical shell, a hollow cylinder or a hemispherical shell and the phosphor material coating is provided on the inner concave surface of the component. The optical component can comprise a lens, an optical window or a waveguide.

Claims (34)

1 . An optical component comprising:

a transparent material;

a concave surface on the transparent material;

a coating of at least one photoluminescent material on a part of the concave surface, wherein the at least one photoluminescent material emits photoluminescent light when illuminated by light of a wavelength in range 300 to 500 nm for exciting the at least one photoluminescent material.

2 . The component of claim 1 , wherein the photoluminescent material coating comprises a layer having a thickness in a range 20 to 500 μm.

3 . The component of claim 1 , and further comprising a light diffusing material.

4 . The component of claim 3 , wherein the light diffusing material is provided in a separate layer from the photoluminescent material coating.

5 . The component of claim 3 , wherein the light diffusing material is provided in the photoluminescent material coating.

6 . The component of claim 3 , wherein the light diffusing material is selected from the group consisting of: titanium dioxide; silica, alumina; and combinations thereof.

7 . The component of claim 1 , wherein the photoluminescent material coating comprises a mixture of a transparent material and the at least one photoluminescent material.

8 . The component of claim 7 , wherein the transparent material is selected from the group consisting of: an epoxy; a silicone; a polymer; and a glass.

9 . The component of claim 1 , wherein the photoluminescent material coating is provided on the component using a deposition approach selected from the group consisting of: spraying; printing; painting; spin coating; and tape casting.

10 . The component of claim 1 , wherein the at least one photoluminescent material is selected from the group consisting of: a YAG-based phosphor; a silicate-based phosphor; a nitride-based phosphor; a sulfate-based phosphor; and combinations thereof.

11 . The component of claim 1 , wherein the component comprises a substantially spherical shell and wherein the photoluminescent material coating is provided on at least a part of the inner concave surface of the component.

12 . The component of claim 1 , wherein the component comprises a hollow cylinder and wherein the photoluminescent material coating is provided on at least a part of the inner concave surface of the component.

13 . The component of claim 1 , wherein the component comprises a substantially hemispherical shell and wherein the photoluminescent material coating is provided on at least a part of the inner concave surface of the component.

14 . The component of claim 1 , wherein the component is selected from the group consisting of: a lens; an optical window and a waveguide.

15 . An LED lighting arrangement, comprising:

an LED; and

an optical component comprising a transparent material; a concave surface on the transparent material and a coating of at least one photoluminescent material on a part of the concave surface,

wherein the at least one photoluminescent material emits photoluminescent light when illuminated by light of a wavelength range 300 to 500 nm for exciting the at least one photoluminescent material.

16 . The lighting arrangement of claim 15 , wherein the component comprises a substantially spherical shell and wherein the photoluminescent material coating is provided on at least a part of the inner concave surface of the component.

17 . The lighting arrangement of claim 15 , wherein the component comprises a hollow cylinder and wherein the photoluminescent coating is provided on at least a part of the inner concave surface of the component.

18 . The lighting arrangement of claim 15 , wherein the component comprises a substantially hemispherical shell and wherein the photoluminescent material coating is provided on at least a part of the inner concave surface of the component.

19 . The lighting arrangement of claim 15 , wherein the component is selected from the group consisting of: a lens; an optical window and a waveguide.

20 . An optical component, comprising:

a transparent material;

a surface on the transparent material; and

a layer of at least one photoluminescent material on at least a part of the surface, wherein the layer of the at least one photoluminescent material has a thickness in the range of 20 to 500 μm.

21 . The component of claim 20 , wherein the optical component has a concave surface and the photoluminescent material is provided on at least a part of the concave surface.

22 . The component of claim 21 , wherein the component comprises a substantially spherical shell and wherein the photoluminescent material is provided on at least a part of the inner concave surface of the component.
