Abstract

A method and system that controls pet access to various different locations and/or objects. In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides an automated system whereby pets wearing an ID tag are allowed access to various locations and/or objects, such as food contained within a feeder dish for example, while a sensor system, responding to the presence of other animals or people, causes the device to close preventing unauthorized access thereto. The feeder further includes one or more sensors using ultrasonic, infrared technology or both in combination for the identification of both tagged and non-tagged animals or children. Further embodiments employ the system to control access to litter boxes, pet toys, pet watering systems, pet gate access, pet containment systems or pet doors.

Claims (31)

1. A system for controlling pet access to a pet system comprising:

a pet system to be controlled;

a means for preventing pet access to said pet system ; and

a sensor system for detection of signatures, wherein said sensor system compares a detected signature to at least one set-up signature corresponding to at least one authorized user and selectively disengages said means for preventing pet access if said detected signature matches said at least one set-up signature;

wherein said sensor system engages said means for preventing pet access if the detected signature indicates a presence of a non-matching detected signature corresponding to an unauthorized user; and

wherein said sensor system further periodically detects signatures and reengages said means for preventing pet access and actively excludes both authorized and unauthorized users if an unauthorized user approaches, even if access would otherwise be authorized.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein said pet system to be controlled is selected from the group consisting of: pet feeder, pet toy, litter box and pet watering system.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein said detected signature is an infrared signature.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein said detected signature is an ultrasonic signature.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein said detected signature is a visible signature.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein said means for preventing pet access is engaged when said sensor detects a user other than said authorized user even if said sensor detects a matching signature.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein said pet system is a pet feeder further comprising:

a housing with a compartment therein; and

a dish for containing food, said dish disposed within said compartment;

said means for preventing access being a door that moves between an open position when said sensor detects a signature that matches said at least one set-up signature and a closed position when said sensor detects a signature other than the at least one set-up signature.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein said door is closed when said sensor detects a signature of a user other than said at least one set-up signature even if said sensor detects said at least one set-up signature.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein said dish is removable from said compartment.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein said pet system is a pet feeder further comprising:

a housing including a feeding compartment, a food storage compartment and a means for selectively transporting food from said storage compartment to said feeding compartment; and

a dish for containing food, said dish disposed within said feeding compartment;

said means for preventing access being a door that moves between an open position when said sensor detects said at least one set-up signature and a closed position when said sensor detects a signature that does not match said at least one set-up signature.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein said door is closed when said sensor detects a signature of a user other than said at least one set-up signature even if said sensor detects the presence of said at least one set-up signature.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein said dish is removable from said compartment.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein said pet system to be controlled is a litter box further comprising:

a housing including a litter compartment;

said means for preventing pet access being a door that moves between an open position and a closed position.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein said door is closed when said sensor detects a signature of a user other than said at least one set-up signature, even if said sensor detects the presence of said at least one set-up signature.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein said pet system to be controlled is a pet door further comprising:

a frame configured to be installed into an opening in a door or wall;

said means for preventing access being a pet door that is displaceable to an open position when said sensor detects the presence of said set-up signature and is maintained in a closed position when said sensor detects the presence of a signature that does not match said set-up signature.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein said pet door is latched when said sensor detects signature of a user other than said set-up signature even if said sensor detects the presence of said set-up signature.
