Abstract

Described herein are bimanually controlled neural localization devices capable of determining if a nerve is nearby a region of the device. In general, the device may include at least two electrodes including an anode in electrical communication with a anodal conductor and a cathode in electrical communication with a cathodal conductor. The device may further include a flexible elongate body, wherein the flexible elongate body has an axial length, a width and a thickness, wherein the axial length is greater than the width, and the width is greater than the thickness and is greater than a width of the at least two electrodes. The at least two electrodes may be disposed substantially in-line and centered along the length of the elongate body. In some embodiments, the device may further include a guidewire coupler at the distal end region of the elongate body.

Claims (26)

1 . A bimanually controlled neural localization device capable of determining if a nerve is nearby a region of the device, the device comprising:

at least two electrodes including an anode in electrical communication with a anodal conductor and a cathode in electrical communication with a cathodal conductor;

a flexible elongate body, wherein the flexible elongate body has an axial length, a width and a thickness, wherein the axial length is greater than the width, and the width is greater than the thickness and is greater than a width of the at least two electrodes, wherein the at least two electrodes are disposed substantially in-line and centered along the length of the elongate body; and

a guidewire coupler at the distal end region of the elongate body, wherein the guidewire coupler is configured such that the elongate body is removably attachable to a proximal end region of a guidewire such that the at least two electrodes can be pulled into position by pulling on the guidewire.

2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the flexible elongate body is ribbon shaped having a first side and a second side, wherein the first and second sides are substantially parallel, and the at least two electrodes are disposed on the first side of the elongate body.

3 . The device of claim 2 , further comprising at least a second pair of electrodes on the second side of the elongate body disposed substantially in-line and centered along the length of the elongate body.

4 . The device of claim 2 , further comprising a flexible circuit coupled to the first side of the elongate body including the at least two electrodes configured to emit a stimulation from the first side of the elongate body.

5 . The device of claim 4 , wherein the flexible elongate body further comprises an extrusion having at least one lumen.

6 . The device of claim 5 , wherein the flexible circuit is disposed within the at least one lumen of the extrusion.

7 . The device of claim 5 , further comprising a structural member disposed within the at least one lumen of the extrusion.

8 . The device of claim 4 , further comprising a second flexible circuit coupled to the second side of the elongate body including at least two electrodes configured to emit a stimulation from the second side of the elongate body.

The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least two electrodes are part of a bipolar network that includes a plurality of anodes and a plurality of cathodes, wherein the plurality of anodes and the plurality of cathodes are configured to form an effectively continuous bipole field along a portion of the flexible elongate body.

10 . The device of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of anodes are in electrical communication with a first anodal conductor and the plurality of cathodes are in electrical communication with a first cathodal conductor.

11 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least two electrodes are configured to emit a stimulation field in a first direction from the elongate body and to emit a stimulation field in a second direction from the elongate body, wherein the second direction is different than the first direction.

12 . The device of claim 11 , further comprising a proximal handle coupled to the elongate body, the handle having a control for selecting activation of either a stimulation field in a first direction from the elongate body or a stimulation field in a second direction from the elongate body.

13 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising a distal handle configured to couple to the distal end of a guidewire such that the electrodes can be pulled into position by pulling on distal handle thereby pulling on the guidewire.

14 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising an anodal connector coupled to the anodal conductor and a cathodal connector coupled to the cathodal conductor wherein the connectors are configured to connect to a power source.

15 . The device of claim 14 , further comprising a second cathodal connector coupled to the cathodal conductor configured to connect to the power source.

16 . A bimanually controlled neural localization device capable of determining if a nerve is nearby a region of the device, the device comprising:

a flexible elongate body, wherein the flexible elongate body is ribbon shaped having a first side and a second side, wherein the first and second sides are substantially parallel;

at least two electrodes disposed on the first side of the elongate body including an anode in electrical communication with a anodal conductor and a cathode in electrical communication with a cathodal conductor, wherein the at least two electrodes are disposed substantially in-line and centered along the length of the elongate body; and

at least two electrodes disposed on the second side of the elongate body including an anode in electrical communication with a anodal conductor and a cathode in electrical communication with a cathodal conductor, wherein the at least two electrodes are disposed substantially in-line and centered along the length of the elongate body.

The device of claim 16 , further comprising a guidewire coupler at the distal end region of the elongate body, wherein the guidewire coupler is configured such that the elongate body is removably attachable to a proximal end region of a guidewire such that the electrodes can be pulled into position by pulling on the guidewire.

The device of claim 16 , further comprising a first flexible circuit coupled to the first side of the elongate body including the at least two electrodes configured to emit a stimulation from the first side of the elongate body and a second flexible circuit coupled to the second side of the elongate body including the at least two electrodes configured to emit a stimulation from the second side of the elongate body.

The device of claim 16 , further comprising a proximal handle coupled to the elongate body, the handle having a control for selecting activation of either the at least two electrodes disposed on the first side of the elongate body or the at least two electrodes disposed on the second side of the elongate body.

The device of claim 16 , wherein the at least two electrodes are part of a bipolar network that includes a plurality of anodes and a plurality of cathodes, wherein the plurality of anodes and the plurality of cathodes are configured to form an effectively continuous bipole field along a portion of the flexible elongate body.
