Abstract

Methods and apparatus are provided for encoding and decoding binary sets using adaptive tree selection. In one exemplary encoding method embodiment, picture data is encoded for a block in a picture; in which one of a plurality of trees structures is selected to code a binary set of data for indicating coefficient significance for the block. In another exemplary encoding method embodiment, picture data is encoded for a block in a picture, in which one or more trees are used to encode a binary set of data for indicating coefficient significance for the block, the one or more trees each having a plurality of nodes, at least one of the nodes of the one or more trees being modified responsive to at least one parameter.

Claims (4)

1. In a video encoder, a method, comprising:

encoding picture data for a block in a picture, wherein one or more tree structures are used to encode a binary set of data for indicating coefficient significance for the block, the one or more tree structures each having a plurality of nodes, at least one of the nodes of the at least one of the one or more tree structures being modified responsive to one or more parameters, wherein the plurality of nodes, for each of the one or more tree structures, comprises a root node and two or more consecutive leaf nodes, the at least one of the nodes being modified comprising the two or more consecutive leaf nodes, and an exclusive OR operation is applied to at least two of the two or more consecutive leaf nodes to modify the at least one of the two or more consecutive leaf nodes.

2. In a video decoder, a method, comprising:

decoding picture data for a block in a picture, wherein one or more tree structures are used to decode a binary set of data for indicating coefficient significance for the block, the one or more tree structures each having a plurality of nodes, at least one of the nodes of the at least one of the one or more tree structures being modified responsive to one or more parameters, wherein the plurality of nodes, for each of the one or more tree structures, comprises a root node and two or more consecutive leaf nodes, the at least one of the nodes being modified comprising the two or more consecutive leaf nodes, and an exclusive OR operation is applied to at least two of the two or more consecutive leaf nodes to modify the at least one of the two or more consecutive leaf nodes.
