Abstract

A modular femoral prosthesis for use during performance of a hip revision procedure includes a proximal body component, a distal stem component, and a locking bolt. Surgical instruments and methods for use in implanting such a modular femoral prosthesis are disclosed.

Claims (42)

1. A modular orthopaedic hip system, comprising:

an implantable proximal body component including a tapered bore and a bolt including a first set of male threads,

a stem insertion tool including an impaction plate positioned at a proximal end and a second set of male threads formed at a distal end, and

an implantable distal stem component configured to be separately secured to the implantable proximal body component and the stem insertion tool, the implantable distal stem component having (i) a tapered post formed in an outer surface thereof, the tapered post being configured to be received into the tapered bore of the implantable proximal body component, (ii) an upper set of female threads having a superior end that opens into a superior surface of the distal stem component, the upper set of female threads extending inferiorly into the distal stem component, and (iii) a lower set of female threads having an superior end that opens into an inferior end of the upper set of female threads, the lower set of female threads extending inferiorly from the upper set of female threads, wherein of the diameter of the upper set of female threads is larger than the diameter of the lower set of female threads,

wherein when the implantable distal stem component is secured to the implantable proximal body component, (i) the bolt is spaced apart from the upper set of female threads and the first set of male threads is engaged with the lower set of female threads, and (ii) the tapered post of the implantable distal stem component is received in the tapered bore of the implantable proximal body component,

wherein when the implantable distal stem component is secured to the stem insertion tool, the second set of male threads is engaged with the upper set of female threads and spaced apart from the lower set of female threads, and

wherein (i) the distal stem component further has a blind hole having a superior end that opens into an inferior end of the lower set of female threads, (ii) the blind hole extends inferiorly from the lower set of female threads, and (iii) the blind hole has a rounded inferior end.

2. The modular orthopaedic hip system of claim 1 , wherein an outer-most edge of each of the female threads of the lower set of female threads is rounded.

3. The modular orthopaedic hip system of claim 1 , wherein the distal stem component further has a keyway formed in the superior surface of the distal stem component.

4. The modular orthopaedic hip system of claim 3 , wherein the keyway is formed in a sidewall of the distal stem component that defines the superior end of the upper set of female threads.

5. The modular orthopaedic hip system of claim 3 , wherein the keyway comprises a lobe-shaped slot.

6. The modular orthopaedic hip system of claim 1 , wherein the distal stem component further has an alignment key secured to the superior surface of the distal stem component and extending superiorly therefrom.

7. The modular orthopaedic hip system of claim 6 , wherein the alignment key comprises a tab extending superiorly from the superior surface of the distal stem component.

8. The modular orthopaedic hip system of claim 6 , wherein:

the distal stem component comprises a bowed distal stem component having an apex extending along a convex side thereof, and

the alignment key is positioned on a side of the bowed distal stem component corresponding with the apex.

9. A modular orthopaedic hip system, comprising:

an implantable proximal body component including a tapered bore and a bolt including a first set of male threads,

a stem insertion tool including (i) an impaction plate positioned at a proximal end (ii) a second set of male threads formed at a distal end, and (iii) an alignment notch formed in the distal end, and

an implantable distal stem component configured to be separately secured to the implantable proximal body component and the stem insertion tool, the implantable distal stem component having (i) a tapered post formed in an outer surface thereof, the tapered post being configured to be received into the tapered bore of the implantable proximal body component, (ii) a threaded bore having a superior end that opens into a superior surface of the distal stem component and extends inferiorly into the distal stem component, and (iii) an alignment key secured to the superior surface of the distal stem component and extending superiorly therefrom

wherein the threaded bore of the distal stem component comprises (i) an upper set of female threads having a superior end that opens into a superior surface of the distal stem component, the upper set of female threads extending inferiorly into the distal stem component, and (ii) a lower set of female threads having an superior end that opens into an inferior end of the upper set of female threads, the lower set of female threads extending inferiorly from the upper set of female threads and having a diameter that is smaller than the diameter of the upper set of female threads,

wherein when the implantable distal stem component is secured to the implantable proximal body component, (i) the bolt is spaced apart from the upper set of female threads and the first set of male threads is engaged with the lower set of female threads, and (ii) the tapered post of the implantable distal stem component is received in the tapered bore of the implantable proximal body component,

wherein when the implantable distal stem component is secured to the stem insertion tool, (i) the second set of male threads is engaged with the upper set of female threads and spaced apart from the lower set of female threads, and (ii) the alignment key is received in the alignment notch, and

wherein (i) the distal stem component further has a blind hole having a superior end that opens into an inferior end of the lower set of female threads, (ii) the blind hole extends inferiorly from the lower set of female threads, and (iii) the blind hole has a rounded inferior end.

10. The modular orthopaedic hip system of claim 9 , wherein the alignment key comprises a tab extending superiorly from the superior surface of the distal stem component.

11. The modular orthopaedic hip system of claim 9 , wherein:

the distal stem component comprises a bowed distal stem component having an apex extending along a convex side thereof, and

the alignment key is positioned on a side of the bowed distal stem component corresponding with the apex.

12. The modular orthopaedic hip system of claim 9 , wherein the distal stem component further has a keyway formed in the superior surface of the distal stem component.

13. The modular orthopaedic hip system of claim 12 , wherein the keyway is formed in a sidewall of the distal stem component that defines the superior end of the threaded bore.

14. The modular orthopaedic hip system of claim 12 , wherein the keyway comprises a lobe-shaped slot.

15. A modular orthopaedic hip system, comprising:

an implantable proximal body component including a tapered bore and a bolt including a first set of male threads,

a stem insertion tool including (i) an impaction plate positioned at a proximal end (ii) a second set of male threads formed at a distal end, and (iii) an alignment notch formed in the distal end,

a prosthetic trial component sized to match an implantable proximal component, the prosthetic trial component including an alignment key, and

an implantable distal stem component configured to be separately secured to the implantable proximal body component, the stem insertion tool, and the prosthetic trial component, the implantable distal stem component having (i) a tapered post formed in an outer surface thereof, the tapered post being configured to be received into the tapered bore of the implantable proximal body component, (ii) a threaded bore having a superior end that opens into a superior surface of the distal stem component and extends inferiorly into the distal stem component, (iii) a keyway formed in a sidewall of the distal stem component that defines the superior end of the threaded bore, and (iv) an alignment key secured to the superior surface of the distal stem component and extending superiorly therefrom,

wherein the threaded bore of the distal stem component comprises (i) an upper set of female threads having a superior end that opens into a superior surface of the distal stem component, the upper set of female threads extending inferiorly into the distal stem component, and (ii) a lower set of female threads having an superior end that opens into an inferior end of the upper set of female threads, the lower set of female threads extending inferiorly from the upper set of female threads and having a diameter that is smaller than the diameter of the upper set of female threads,

wherein when the implantable distal stem component is secured to the implantable proximal body component, (i) the bolt is spaced apart from the upper set of female threads and the first set of male threads is engaged with the lower set of female threads, and (ii) the tapered post of the implantable distal stem component is received in the tapered bore of the implantable proximal body component,

wherein when the implantable distal stem component is secured to the stem insertion tool, (i) the second set of male threads is engaged with the upper set of female threads and spaced apart from the lower set of female threads, and (ii) the alignment key of the implantable distal stem component is received in the alignment notch,

wherein when the implantable distal stem component is secured to the prosthetic trial component, the alignment key of the prosthetic trial component is received in the keyway of the implantable distal stem component, and

wherein (i) the distal stem component further has a blind hole having a superior end that opens into an inferior end of the lower set of female threads, (ii) the blind hole extends inferiorly from the lower set of female threads, and (iii) the blind hole has a rounded inferior end.

16. The modular orthopaedic hip system of claim 15 , wherein the keyway comprises a lobe-shaped slot.
