Abstract

A fastener system is constructed wherein the installation and removal drive surfaces intersect an enlarged core diameter in a transitional surface that extends between the installation and removal surfaces of adjacent wings. The transitional surface has a concave form that conforms to the core diameter. The projections of the driver in the system are formed in a blunt shape.

Claims (189)

1. A fastener system comprising:

a fastener having a head and a shank wherein the head is constructed having driver engageable surfaces and said driver engageable surfaces define multiple wings radially extending from a central core;

a driver having an end constructed with mating surfaces for engagement with the driver engageable surfaces of the fastener head and said mating surfaces define multiple projections radially extending from a central core matching the wings;

wherein each of said projections are constructed with a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion and a removal surface that define the projection,

wherein the central core of the driver has a first radius and the tip portion has a second radius and wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.55, and

wherein the driver engageable surfaces of the fastener head are constructed to receive the mating surfaces of the driver.

2. A fastener system according to claim 1 , wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.65.

3. A fastener system according to claim 1 , wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is within the range of 0.65 to 0.70.

4. A fastener system according to claim 1 , wherein the driver engageable surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment and said mating surfaces have a matching shape.

5. A fastener system according to claim 1 , wherein the projections are arranged in an hexalobular configuration.

6. A fastener system according to claim 1 , wherein the multiple wings consist of four wings.

7. A fastener system according to claim 1 , wherein the driver engageable surfaces are recessed in the fastener head and wherein the mating surfaces are external surfaces on the driver end.

8. A fastener system according to claim 1 , wherein the driver engageable surfaces are external surfaces of the fastener head and wherein the mating surfaces are recessed in the driver end.

9. A fastener system according to claim 1 , wherein each of the projections are connected by a transition surface extending between the installation and removal surfaces of adjacent projections.

10. The fastener system according to claim 9 , wherein the transition surface conforms to a circumference of the central core.

11. A method of constructing a fastener system comprising:

forming a fastener having a head and a shank wherein the head is constructed having driver engageable surfaces and said driver engageable surfaces define multiple wings radially extending from a central core;

constructing a driver having an end having mating surfaces for engagement with the driver engageable surfaces of the fastener head and said mating surfaces define multiple projections radially extending from a central core matching the wings;

constructing each of said projections with a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion and a removal surface that define the projection;

forming the central core having a first radius and the tip portion having a second radius and wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.55; and

forming the driver engageable surfaces of the fastener head to receive the mating surfaces of the driver.

12. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.65.

13. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is within the range of 0.65 to 0.70.

14. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the driver engageable surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment and said mating surfaces have a matching shape.

15. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the projections are arranged in an hexalobular configuration.

16. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the multiple wings consist of four wings.

17. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the driver engageable surfaces are recessed in the fastener head and wherein the mating surfaces are external surfaces on the driver end.

18. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the driver engageable surfaces are external surfaces of the fastener head and wherein the mating surfaces are recessed in the driver end.

19. The method according to claim 11 , wherein each of the projections are connected by a transition surface extending between the installation and removal surfaces of adjacent projections.

20. The method according to claim 19 , wherein the transition surface conforms to a circumference of the central core.

21. A fastener comprising:

a shank; and

a head connected to the shank, wherein the head comprises driver engageable surfaces that define multiple wings radially extending from a central core,

wherein each of the wings has a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion and a removal surface, and

wherein the central core has a first radius and the tip portion has a second radius and wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.55.

22. A fastener according to claim 21 , wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.65.

23. A fastener according to claim 21 , wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is within the range of 0.65 to 0.70.

24. A fastener according to claim 21 , wherein the driver engageable surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment.

25. A fastener according to claim 21 , wherein the multiple wings are arranged in an hexalobular configuration.

26. A fastener according to claim 21 , wherein the multiple wings consist of four wings.

27. A fastener according to claim 21 , wherein the driver engageable surfaces are recessed in the fastener head.

28. A fastener according to claim 21 , wherein the driver engageable surfaces are external surfaces of the fastener head.

29. The fastener according to claim 21 , wherein each wing further comprises a transition surface that extends between the installation and removal surfaces of adjacent wings.

30. A fastener according to claim 29 , wherein the transition surface conforms to a circumference of the central core.

31. A driver for engaging with and driving a fastener, the driver comprising:

an end comprising mating surfaces for engagement with driver engageable surfaces of a fastener, wherein the mating surfaces define multiple projections radially extending from a central core,

wherein each of said projections has a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion, and a removal surface, and

wherein the central core has a first radius and the tip portion has a second radius and wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.55.

32. A driver according to claim 31 , wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.65.

33. A driver according to claim 31 , wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is within the range of 0.65 to 0.70.

34. A driver according to claim 31 , wherein the mating surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment.

35. A driver according to claim 31 , wherein the multiple projections are arranged in an hexalobular configuration.

36. A driver according to claim 31 , wherein the multiple projections consist of four wings.

37. A driver according to claim 31 , wherein the mating surfaces are recessed in the driver end.

38. A driver according to claim 31 , wherein the mating surfaces are external surfaces on the driver end.

39. A driver according to claim 31 , wherein each of said projections further comprises a transition surface that extends between the installation and removal surfaces of adjacent projections.

40. A driver according to claim 39 , wherein the transition surface conforms to a circumference of the central core.

41. A method of making a fastener, the method comprising:

forming a fastener comprising a shank and a head connected to the shank,

wherein the head comprises driver engageable surfaces that define multiple wings radially extending from a central core,

wherein each of the wings has a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion and a removal surface, and

wherein the central core has a first radius and the tip portion has a second radius and wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.55.

42. A method according to claim 41 , wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.65.

43. A method according to claim 41 , wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is within the range of 0.65 to 0.70.

44. A method according to claim 41 , wherein the driver engageable surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment.

45. A method according to claim 41 , wherein the multiple wings are arranged in an hexalobular configuration.

46. A method according to claim 41 , wherein the multiple wings consist of four wings.

47. A method according to claim 41 , wherein the driver engageable surfaces are recessed in the fastener head.

48. A method according to claim 41 , wherein the driver engageable surfaces are external surfaces of the fastener head.

49. A method according to claim 41 , wherein each of the wings further comprises a transition surface that extends between the installation and removal surfaces of adjacent wings.

50. A method according to claim 49 , wherein the transition surface conforms to a circumference of the central core.

51. A method of making a driver for engaging with and driving a fastener, the method comprising:

forming an end comprising mating surfaces for engagement with driver engageable surfaces of a fastener,

wherein the mating surfaces define multiple projections radially extending from a central core,

wherein each of said projections has a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion and a removal surface, and

wherein the central core has a first radius and the tip portion has a second radius and wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.55.

52. A method according to claim 51 , wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.65.

53. A method according to claim 51 , wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is within the range of 0.65 to 0.70.

54. A method according to claim 51 , wherein the mating surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment.

55. A method according to claim 51 , wherein the multiple projections are arranged in an hexalobular configuration.

56. A method according to claim 51 , wherein the multiple projections consist of four wings.

57. A method according to claim 51 , wherein the mating surfaces are recessed in the driver end.

58. A method according to claim 51 , wherein the mating surfaces are external surfaces on the driver end.

59. A method according to claim 51 , wherein each of the projections further comprises a transition surface that extends between the installation and removal surfaces of adjacent projections.

60. A method according to claim 59 , wherein the transition surface conforms to a circumference of the central core.

61. A fastener system comprising:

a fastener having a head and a shank wherein the head is constructed having driver engageable surfaces and said driver engageable surfaces define multiple wings radially extending from a central core;

a driver having an end constructed with mating surfaces for engagement with the driver engageable surfaces of the fastener head and said mating surfaces define multiple projections radially extending from a central core matching the wings;

wherein each of said projections are constructed with a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion and a removal surface that define the projection;

wherein the driver engageable surfaces of the fastener head are constructed to receive the mating surfaces of the driver;

wherein the driver engageable surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment and said mating surfaces have a matching shape; and

wherein the central core of the driver has a first radius and the tip portion has a second radius and wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.55.

62. A fastener system according to claim 61 , wherein the projections are arranged in an hexalobular configuration.

63. A fastener system according to claim 61 , wherein the multiple wings consist of four wings.

64. A fastener system according to claim 61 , wherein the driver engageable surfaces are recessed in the fastener head and wherein the mating surfaces are external surfaces on the driver end.

65. A fastener system according to claim 61 , wherein each of the projections are connected by a transition surface extending between the installation and removal surfaces of adjacent projections.

66. The fastener system according to claim 65 , wherein the transition surface conforms to a circumference of the central core.

67. A fastener system comprising: 61 ,

a fastener having a head and a shank wherein the head is constructed having driver engageable surfaces and said driver engageable surfaces define multiple wings radially extending from a central core;

a driver having an end constructed with mating surfaces for engagement with the driver engageable surfaces of the fastener head and said mating surfaces define multiple projections radially extending from a central core matching the wings;

wherein each of said projections are constructed with a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion and a removal surface that define the projection;

wherein the driver engageable surfaces of the fastener head are constructed to receive the mating surfaces of the driver;

wherein the driver engageable surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment and said mating surfaces have a matching shape; and

wherein the driver engageable surfaces are external surfaces of the fastener head and wherein the mating surfaces are recessed in the driver end.

68. A method of constructing a fastener system comprising:

forming a fastener having a head and a shank wherein the head is constructed having driver engageable surfaces and said driver engageable surfaces define multiple wings radially extending from a central core;

constructing a driver having an end having mating surfaces for engagement with the driver engageable surfaces of the fastener head and said mating surfaces define multiple projections radially extending from a central core matching the wings;

constructing each of said projections with a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion and a removal surface that define the projection;

forming the central core having a first radius and the tip portion having a second radius and wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.55; and

forming the driver engageable surfaces of the fastener head to receive the mating surfaces of the driver,

wherein the driver engageable surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment and said mating surfaces have a matching shape.

69. The method according to claim 68 , wherein the projections are arranged in an hexalobular configuration.

70. The method according to claim 68 , wherein the multiple wings consist of four wings.

71. The method according to claim 68 , wherein the driver engageable surfaces are recessed in the fastener head and wherein the mating surfaces are external surfaces on the driver end.

72. The method according to claim 68 , wherein each of the projections are connected by a transition surface extending between the installation and removal surfaces of adjacent projections.

73. The method according to claim 72 , wherein the transition surface conforms to a circumference of the central core.

74. A method of constructing a fastener system comprising:

forming a fastener having a head and a shank wherein the head is constructed having driver engageable surfaces and said driver engageable surfaces define multiple wings radially extending from a central core;

constructing a driver having an end having mating surfaces for engagement with the driver engageable surfaces of the fastener head and said mating surfaces define multiple projections radially extending from a central core matching the wings;

constructing each of said projections with a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion and a removal surface that define the projection; and

forming the driver engageable surfaces of the fastener head to receive the mating surfaces of the driver,

wherein the driver engageable surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment and said mating surfaces have a matching shape, and

wherein the driver engageable surfaces are external surfaces of the fastener head and wherein the mating surfaces are recessed in the driver end.

75. A fastener comprising:

a shank; and

a head connected to the shank, wherein the head comprises driver engageable surfaces that define multiple wings radially extending from a central core,

wherein each of the wings has a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion and a removal surface,

wherein the central core has a first radius and the tip portion has a second radius and wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.55, and

wherein the driver engageable surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment.

76. A fastener according to claim 75 , wherein the multiple wings are arranged in an hexalobular configuration.

77. A fastener according to claim 75 , wherein the multiple wings consist of four wings.

78. A fastener according to claim 75 , wherein the driver engageable surfaces are recessed in the fastener head.

79. The fastener according to claim 75 , wherein each wing further comprises a transition surface that extends between the installation and removal surfaces of adjacent wings.

80. A fastener according to claim 79 , wherein the transition surface conforms to a circumference of the central core.

81. A fastener comprising:

a shank; and

a head connected to the shank, wherein the head comprises driver engageable surfaces that define multiple wings radially extending from a central core,

wherein each of the wings has a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion and a removal surface,

wherein the driver engageable surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment, and

wherein the driver engageable surfaces are external surfaces of the fastener head.

82. A driver for engaging with and driving a fastener, the driver comprising:

an end comprising mating surfaces for engagement with driver engageable surfaces of a fastener, wherein the mating surfaces define multiple projections radially extending from a central core,

wherein each of said projections has a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion, and a removal surface,

wherein the central core has a first radius and the tip portion has a second radius and wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.55, and

wherein the mating surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment.

83. A driver according to claim 82 , wherein the multiple projections are arranged in an hexalobular configuration.

84. A driver according to claim 82 , wherein the multiple projections consist of four wings.

85. A driver according to claim 82 , wherein the mating surfaces are external surfaces on the driver end.

86. A driver according to claim 82 , wherein each of said projections further comprises a transition surface that extends between the installation and removal surfaces of adjacent projections.

87. A driver according to claim 86 , wherein the transition surface conforms to a circumference of the central core.

88. A driver for engaging with and driving a fastener, the driver comprising:

an end comprising mating surfaces for engagement with driver engageable surfaces of a fastener, wherein the mating surfaces define multiple projections radially extending from a central core,

wherein each of said projections has a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion, and a removal surface,

wherein the mating surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment, and

wherein the mating surfaces are recessed in the driver end.

89. A method of making a fastener, the method comprising:

forming a fastener comprising a shank and a head connected to the shank,

wherein the head comprises driver engageable surfaces that define multiple wings radially extending from a central core,

wherein each of the wings has a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion and a removal surface,

wherein the central core has a first radius and the tip Portion has a second radius and wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.55, and

wherein the driver engageable surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment.

90. A method according to claim 89 , wherein the multiple wings are arranged in an hexalobular configuration.

91. A method according to claim 89 , wherein the multiple wings consist of four wings.

92. A method according to claim 89 , wherein the driver engageable surfaces are recessed in the fastener head.

93. A method according to claim 89 , wherein each of the wings further comprises a transition surface that extends between the installation and removal surfaces of adjacent wings.

94. A method according to claim 93 , wherein the transition surface conforms to a circumference of the central core.

95. A method of making a fastener, the method comprising:

forming a fastener comprising a shank and a head connected to the shank,

wherein the head comprises driver engageable surfaces that define multiple wings radially extending from a central core,

wherein each of the wings has a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion and a removal surface,

wherein the driver engageable surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment, and

wherein the driver engageable surfaces are external surfaces of the fastener head.

96. A method of making a driver for engaging with and driving a fastener, the method comprising:

forming an end comprising mating surfaces for engagement with driver engageable surfaces of a fastener,

wherein the mating surfaces define multiple projections radially extending from a central core,

wherein each of said projections has a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion and a removal surface,

wherein the central core has a first radius and the tip portion has a second radius and wherein the ratio of the first radius to the second radius is greater than 0.55, and

wherein the mating surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment.

97. A method according to claim 96 , wherein the multiple projections are arranged in an hexalobular configuration.

98. A method according to claim 96 , wherein the multiple projections consist of four wings.

99. A method according to claim 96 , wherein the mating surfaces are external surfaces on the driver end.

100. A method according to claim 96 , wherein each of the projections further comprises a transition surface that extends between the installation and removal surfaces of adjacent projections.

101. A method according to claim 100 , wherein the transition surface conforms to a circumference of the central core.

102. A method of making a driver for engaging with and driving a fastener, the method comprising:

forming an end comprising mating surfaces for engagement with driver engageable surfaces of a fastener,

wherein the mating surfaces define multiple projections radially extending from a central core,

wherein each of said projections has a cross sectional shape comprising an installation surface, a tip portion and a removal surface,

wherein the mating surfaces are constructed in the shape of a spiral segment, and

wherein the mating surfaces are recessed in the driver end.
