Method and apparatus for anastomosis

Apparatus according to the present disclosure include at least one fastener including a first fastener portion having an anchoring leg portion, a second fastener portion including an anchoring leg portion, wherein the first and second fastener portions are operatively associated with one another to selectively fix the position of the first fastener portion relative to the second fastener portion.
1. A method for approximating body vessels, comprising:
providing an insertion sleeve having at least one fastener mounted therein, the at least one fastener defining a longitudinal axis and having first and second locking leg portions, each of the first and second locking leg portions extending between a respective inner end and a respective outer end, the at least one fastener defining a length from the outer end of the first locking leg to the outer end of the second locking leg portion, the at least one fastener having first and second anchoring leg portions, each of the first and second anchoring leg portions pivotally coupled to the outer end of a respective one of the first and second locking leg portions, the first and second anchoring leg portions positionable between open and closed configurations;
positioning the insertion sleeve adjacent at least one body vessel;
deploying at least one of the first and second anchoring leg portions of the at least one fastener such that at least one of the first and second anchoring leg portions is disposed in the open configuration wherein the at least one of the first and second anchoring leg portions is angled relative to the first and second locking leg portions;
maintaining the at least one of the first and second anchoring leg portions at a non-perpendicular angle relative to the first and second locking leg portions while in the open configuration;
positioning at least one of the first and second anchoring leg portions at least partially within the at least one body vessel such that movement of the at least one body vessel is prevented; and
selectively longitudinally translating the first and second locking leg portions toward one another along the longitudinal axis of the at least one fastener to approximate the first and second anchoring leg portions.
2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
positioning the insertion sleeve adjacent at least one of a urethra and a bladder of a patient.
3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
deploying at least one of the first and second anchoring leg portions adjacent a first body vessel such that at least one of the first and second anchoring leg portions is disposed in the open configuration; and
deploying the other of the at least one of the first and second anchoring leg portions adjacent a second body vessel such that the other of the at least one of the first and second anchoring leg portions is disposed in the open configuration.
4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
positioning the insertion sleeve adjacent the at least one vessel via at least one of a retropubic and a perineal prostatectomy approach.
5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
passing the insertion sleeve trans-urethrally through a urethra until a distal end of the insertion sleeve extends out of a urethral stump and into a bladder through a bladder neck.
6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
moving the insertion sleeve in order to position at least one of the first and second anchoring leg portions of the at least one fastener between the open and closed configurations.
7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising locking the first and second locking leg portions together.
8. The method of claim 7 , wherein locking the first and second locking leg portions includes engaging at least one projection of the first locking leg portion with at least one projection of the second locking leg portion.
9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising preventing movement of at least one of the first and second locking leg portions in a first direction as the first and second locking leg portions longitudinally translate toward one another in a second direction, the first and second directions being opposite to one another.
10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sliding the first locking leg portion through a locking passage defined in the second locking leg portion to longitudinally translate the first and second locking leg portions toward one another.
11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising positioning sharpened ends of first and second anchoring leg portions within the at least one body vessel.
12. The method of claim 1 , further including maintaining the first and second anchoring leg portions in angled positions in which outer ends of the first and second anchoring leg portions face one another.
