Abstract

A stand-alone icon (i.e., an icon that is not part of an application interface) is provided to facilitate communications across a network between users of at least one communications program. The icon represents a contact or a set of contacts. Status information regarding the contact or set of contacts is received and displayed using the icon or in response to an operation performed on the icon. The icon additionally may provide an interface for performing actions related to the contact or set of contacts. The actions may generally include, for example, retrieving profile information about the contact, setting an alert to indicate that the contact's network/login status (e.g., login, logout, or idle) has changed, or performing communications with the contact.

Claims (39)

1. A method comprising:

providing, by at least one processor, a stand-alone graphical object that conveys information regarding one or more contacts of a user in at least one messaging communications program that facilitates communications across a network, the stand-alone graphical object being configured to allow the user to perform an action otherwise available through an interface of the at least one messaging communications program regardless of whether the interface of the at least one messaging communications program is running when an operation corresponding to the action is performed;

receiving status information regarding the one or more contacts of the user; and

updating, regardless of whether the interface of the at least one messaging communications program is running, a visual representation of the stand-alone graphical object in response to the received status information, such that the visual representation of the stand-alone graphical object conveys the status information of the one or more contacts.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the status information indicates whether a contact is online, away, busy, or offline.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the status information indicates a time duration that a contact has been online, away, busy, or offline.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the status information indicates whether a contact is using a mobile device.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the status information indicates the types of connections a contact can accept.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

detecting that a graphical object representing information to be transmitted to the one or more contacts has been positioned on or near the stand-alone graphical object; and

automatically transmitting the information represented by the graphical object to the one or more contacts in response to the graphical object representing information to be transmitted being positioned on or near the stand-alone graphical object.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one messaging communications program is one or more of an electronic mail program, an instant messaging program, a file transfer protocol program, or a voice-over-IP program.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein and the stand-alone graphical object is generated based on a segment of code associated with the at least one messaging communication program.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the status information is displayed as a pop-up representation associated with the stand-alone graphical object.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

enabling the user to transmit at least one of a file, image, and text message to

the one or more contacts using the stand-alone graphical object.

11. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions, which when executed on at least one processor, causes the at least one processor to perform a method comprising:

providing a stand-alone graphical object that conveys information regarding one or more contacts of a user in at least one messaging communications program that facilitates communications across a network, the stand-alone graphical object being configured to allow the user to perform an action otherwise available through an interface of the at least one messaging communications program regardless of whether the interface of the at least one messaging communications program is running when an operation corresponding to the action is performed;

receiving status information regarding the one or more contacts of the user; and

updating, regardless of whether the interface of the at least one messaging communications program is running, a visual representation of the stand-alone graphical object in response to the received status information, such that the visual representation of the stand-alone graphical object conveys the status information of the one or more contacts.

12. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the status information indicates whether a contact is online, away, busy, or offline.

13. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the status information indicates a time duration a contact has been online, away, busy, or offline.

14. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the status information indicates whether a contact is using a mobile device.

15. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the method performed by the at least one processor further comprises:

detecting that a graphical object representing information to be transmitted to the one or more contacts has been positioned on or near the stand-alone graphical object; and

automatically transmitting the information represented by the graphical object to the one or more contacts in response to the graphical object representing information to be transmitted being positioned on or near the stand-alone graphical object.

16. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the method performed by the at least one processor further comprises:

enabling a display of the stand-alone graphical object at a first location on a user interface of a mobile device; and

enabling a display of the stand-alone graphical object at a second location on the user interface in response to a drag and drop operation by the user.

17. An apparatus comprising:

a memory device storing instructions;

at least one processor executing the instructions to:

provide a stand-alone graphical object that conveys information regarding one or more contacts of a user in at least one messaging communications program that facilitates communications across a network, the stand-alone graphical object being configured to allow the user to perform an action otherwise available through an interface of the at least one messaging communications program regardless of whether the interface of the at least one messaging communications program is running when an operation corresponding to the action is performed;

receive status information regarding the one or more contacts of the user; and

update, regardless of whether the interface of the at least one messaging communications program is running, a visual representation of the stand-alone graphical object in response to the received status information, such that the visual representation of the stand-alone graphical object conveys the status information of the one or more contacts.

The apparatus of claim 17 , further comprising a display device for displaying, on a first location, the stand-alone graphical object on a user interface, wherein the processor executes the instructions to move the stand-alone graphical object from the first location to a second location on the user interface in response to a drag and drop operation by the user.

The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the at least one messaging communications program is one or more of an electronic mail program, an instant messaging program, a file transfer protocol program, or a voice-over-IP program and the stand-alone graphical object is generated based on a segment of code associated with the at least one messaging communication program.

20. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the at least one messaging communications program comprises at least one of an electronic mail program, an instant messaging program, a file transfer protocol program, or a voice-over-IP program.
