Abstract

A lighting system for areal illumination is disclosed which may include a remote driver and a plurality of fixtures including luminaires. The luminaires may include a light source whose output light level can be adjusted, a light sensor co-located therewith adapted to measure light received from adjacent fixtures. The remote driver may provide power for the light sources of the luminaires.

Claims (38)

1. A lighting system comprising:

a plurality of luminaires, a respective one of which comprises a light source;

a plurality of light sensors, a respective one of which is co-located with a respective one of the luminaires; and

a driver that is responsive to the light sensors,

wherein the driver is further configured to provide power to the light sources of the luminaires,

wherein the driver is further configured to group at least some of the luminaires into a group such that at least one of the light sensors co-located with the luminaire that is in the group detects light from at least one other of the luminaires in the group, and

wherein the driver is further configured to control an output light level of the luminaires in the group as a group.

2. The lighting system of claim 1 further comprising one or more switches or dimmers.

3. The lighting system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more sensors, wherein the sensors are configured to sense a measureable quantity that is used to control lighting levels of the luminaires.

4. The lighting system of claim 3 , wherein the measurable quantity is motion or presence of an object.

5. The lighting system of claim 1 further comprising a wall controller co-located with an additional light sensor, and wherein the driver is further configured to include the wall controller in the group of the luminaires in response to a detection by the additional light sensor of light from one of the luminaires included in the group of luminaires.

6. The lighting system of claim 1 , wherein the light source included in the luminaires is a first light source and wherein the luminaires also include a second light source different from the first light source.

7. A lighting system comprising:

a driver configured to provide power to a plurality of signal sources, wherein a respective one of the signal sources is co-located with a respective one of a plurality of luminaires,

wherein the driver is further configured to receive data from a plurality of sensors, a respective one of the sensors being co-located with the respective one of the luminaires, and a respective one of the sensors being configured to detect a type of signal that is emitted by the signal sources,

wherein the driver is further configured to group the luminaires into a group such that at least one of the sensors co-located with the luminaires that are in the group detects a signal from at least one of the signal sources that are co-located with the luminaires in the group, and

wherein the driver controls an output light level of the luminaires in the group as a group.

8. The lighting system of claim 7 , wherein the signal is at least one of a visible light, an infrared light, a sound, an ultrasound, or a radio wave.

9. The lighting system of claim 7 , wherein the signal sources comprise light sources of the luminaires.

10. The lighting system of claim 7 , wherein the group is a first group, wherein the driver is further configured to group one luminaire into a second group and wherein the luminaires in the first and second groups are in one contiguous space.

11. The lighting system of claim 7 , wherein the group is controlled by a switch.

12. The lighting system of claim 7 , wherein the driver controls the luminaires in the group in response to motion detected by a motion sensor.

13. The lighting system of claim 7 , wherein the driver controls the output light level of the luminaires in the group so that the luminaires in the group provide substantially constant light levels independent of any auxiliary sources of light.

14. A method of providing illumination comprising:

providing power to a plurality of signal sources, wherein a respective one of the signal sources is adjacent to or included in a respective one of a plurality of luminaires;

receiving data from a plurality of sensors, wherein a respective one of the sensors is adjacent to or included in the respective one of the luminaires, and a respective one of the sensors is configured to detect a type of signal that is emitted by the signal sources;

assigning at least two of the luminaires to a group, wherein at least one of the sensors adjacent to or included in the at least two luminaires that are in the group detects a signal from at least one of the signal sources that are adjacent to or included in the at least two luminaires in the group; and

controlling output light levels of the at least two luminaires that are in the group as a group.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the signal sources include light sources of the luminaires, and the sensors include light sensors.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the group includes a group of fixtures that include the luminaires and control devices.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising assigning a control device co-located with a light sensor to the group of fixtures based on the light sensor detecting light from one of the at least two luminaires assigned to the group of fixtures.

18. A method of providing illumination comprising:

powering a plurality of light sources over a plurality of wires;

receiving, over at least one of the wires, a signal that represents light that is detected at a given one of the light sources from at least another one of the light sources;

grouping at least two of the plurality of light sources into a group of light sources based on the signal that represents light that is detected at the given one of the light sources from at least another one of the light sources; and

controlling, via control signals transmitted over at least one of the wires, light levels of the at least two of the plurality of light sources as a group.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein the controlling is performed in response to a signal from a motion or presence detector.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein the controlling is performed in response to a signal from a switch.
