Abstract

Techniques for statistically estimating a rating or other “figure of merit” for a user are disclosed. According to one such technique, a first quantity of submissions that were submitted by a user is determined. A second quantity of submissions that (a) were submitted by the user and (b) obtained a particular rating from a rating mechanism also is determined. A user rating for the user is determined based at least in part on the first quantity, the second quantity, and a factor that is independent of both the first quantity and the second quantity—such as the probability that an answer submitted by any answerer in a population will obtain the particular rating from the rating mechanism. The influence that the second quantity has on the user rating relative to the influence that the factor has on the user rating may depend at least in part on the first quantity.

Claims (31)

1. A method of rating a particular user, the method comprising:

determining a first quantity of answers that were submitted by the particular user;

determining a second quantity of answers that were (a) submitted by the particular user and (b) designated as selected answers by one or more users other than the particular user;

determining, based at least in part on the first quantity and the second quantity, a first probability that an answer submitted by the particular user will be designated as a selected answer by one or more users other than the particular user;

determining a second probability that a particular answer submitted by any user in a specified group of two or more users will be designated as a selected answer by one or more users other than a user that submitted the particular answer;

determining a rating for the particular user based at least in part on the first probability, the second probability, and the first quantity; and

displaying the rating as a measure of credibility of answers submitted by the particular user;

wherein, in determining the rating, an influence that the first probability has on the rating relative to an influence that the second probability has on the rating is based at least in part on the first quantity;

wherein the method is performed by one or more computing devices.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein, in determining the rating, as the first quantity increases, the influence that the first probability has on the rating increases and the influence that the second probability has on the rating decreases.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second quantity of answers were designated as the best answer among a plurality of answers.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second quantity of answers were to one or more questions that are limited to a particular category.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein displaying the rating comprises displaying, based on the rating, a credibility rating in association with (a) user data that indicates the particular user and (b) answer data that indicates a particular answer provided by the particular user to a particular question.

The method of claim 5 , wherein displaying the credibility rating comprises concurrently displaying a plurality of credibility ratings, each in association with (c) a different user of a plurality of users that includes the particular user and (d) a different answer of a plurality of answers that includes the particular answer.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein displaying the rating is performed in response to receiving an HTTP request over a network.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the HTTP request is for a webpage that indicates a set of answers to a question, pseudonyms of answerers who submitted the set of answers, or credibility ratings of the answerers.

9. One or more non-transitory machine-readable media storing instructions, which, when executed by one or more processors, cause:

determining a first quantity of answers that were submitted by a particular user;

determining a second quantity of answers that were (a) submitted by the particular user and (b) designated as selected answers by one or more users other than the particular user;

determining, based at least in part on the first quantity and the second quantity, a first probability that an answer submitted by the particular user will be designated as a selected answer by one or more users other than the particular user;

determining a second probability that a particular answer submitted by any user in a specified group of two or more users will be designated as a selected answer by one or more users other than a user that submitted the particular answer;

determining a rating for the particular user based at least in part on the first probability, the second probability, and the first quantity; and

displaying the rating as a measure of credibility of answers submitted by the particular user;

wherein, in determining the rating, an influence that the first probability has on the rating relative to an influence that the second probability has on the rating is based at least in part on the first quantity.

10. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable media of claim 9 , wherein, in determining the rating, as the first quantity increases, the influence that the first probability has on the rating increases and the influence that the second probability has on the rating decreases.

11. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable media of claim 9 , wherein the second quantity of answers were designated as the best answer among a plurality of answers.

12. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable media of claim 9 , wherein the second quantity of answers were to one or more questions that are limited to a particular category.

13. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable media of claim 9 , wherein displaying the rating comprises displaying, based on the rating, a credibility rating in association with (a) user data that indicates the particular user and (b) answer data that indicates a particular answer provided by the particular user to a particular question.

14. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable media of claim 13 , wherein displaying the credibility rating comprises concurrently displaying a plurality of credibility ratings, each in association with (c) a different user of a plurality of users that includes the particular user and (d) a different answer of a plurality of answers that includes the particular answer.

15. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable media of claim 9 , wherein displaying the rating is performed in response to receiving an HTTP request over a network.

16. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable media of claim 15 , wherein the HTTP request is for a webpage that indicates a set of answers to a question, pseudonyms of answerers who submitted the set of answers, or credibility ratings of the answerers.
