Abstract

Holding arrangements for a surgical access assembly are disclosed. One holding arrangement includes a body portion, an engagement barrel and a retaining member. The retaining member is configured as a hook at a distal end of the body portion and is sized to partially encircle a portion of an outer sheath. The engagement barrel is position on a proximal end of the body portion and is configured to be operatively connected to a surgical holding arrangement.

Claims (20)

1. A holding assembly for a surgical access assembly, comprising:

a body portion having a distal end segment and a proximal end segment and a longitudinal axis extending through the proximal end segment of the body portion;

an engagement barrel coaxial with the longitudinal axis so as to be disposed on the proximal end segment of the body portion to encircle a portion of the longitudinal axis, wherein the engagement barrel is selectively rotatable around the proximal end segment of the body portion; and

a retaining member formed as a curved hook at a distal end of the distal end segment of the body portion, the retaining member curving away from the longitudinal axis at the distal end segment of the body portion and curving back toward the body portion, the hook having a partial circular shaped circumference with a single gap disposed between a distal end of the retaining member and the distal end segment of the body portion, wherein the distal end of the retaining member is offset from the longitudinal axis of the body portion such that the gap is not aligned with the longitudinal axis of the body portion, and wherein the hook is sized to partially and selectively encircle in a compressive manner an outer circumference of an outer sheath of the surgical access assembly, and wherein the engagement barrel is configured to be operatively connected to a surgical holding arrangement.

2. The holding assembly of claim 1 , wherein the body portion includes one or more bend points to axially offset the retaining member from the engagement barrel.

3. The holding assembly of claim 2 , wherein the body portion includes first and second bend points separated by a shaft section such that the first bend point cooperates with a first section of the body portion to define the proximal end segment and the second bend point cooperates with a second section of the body portion to define the distal end segment.

4. The holding assembly of claim 3 , wherein the distal end segment is arranged along a second axis that is spaced from and parallel to the longitudinal axis that extends through the proximal end segment, and wherein the shaft section is disposed at an angle with respect to the proximal end segment and the distal end segment.

5. The holding assembly of claim 4 , further comprising stop members positioned on either end of the engagement barrel around an outside surface of the proximal end segment, wherein the stop members are configured to prevent the engagement barrel from gross movement.

6. The holding assembly of claim 5 , wherein the engagement barrel is sized to have a length that permits selective lateral positioning of the holding assembly along the longitudinal axis that extends through the proximal end segment.

7. The holding assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a mounting member fixedly secured to a proximal end of the engagement barrel such that the mounting member is configured to rotate with the engagement barrel, wherein the mounting member is configured to be received within a surgical clamp mechanism.

8. The holding assembly of claim 1 , wherein the hook is defined by a first end and a second end that cooperate to define the gap therebetween such that the outer sheath may be selectively angled while being retained by the hook.

9. A holding assembly for a surgical access assembly, comprising:

a body portion having a distal end segment and a proximal end segment and a longitudinal axis extending through the proximal end segment of the body portion;

an engagement barrel coaxial with the longitudinal axis so as to be disposed on the proximal end segment of the body portion to encircle a portion of the longitudinal axis, wherein the engagement barrel is selectively rotatable around the proximal end segment of the body portion;

stop members positioned on either end of the engagement barrel around an outside surface of the proximal end segment, wherein the stop members are configured to prevent the engagement barrel from gross movement; and

a retaining member formed as a curved hook at a distal end of the distal end segment of the body portion, the hook having a partial circular shaped circumference with a gap disposed between a distal end of the retaining member and the distal end segment of the body portion, wherein the hook is sized to partially and selectively encircle in a compressive manner an outer circumference of an outer sheath of the surgical access assembly, and wherein the engagement barrel is configured to be operatively connected to a surgical holding arrangement.

10. A holding assembly for a surgical access assembly, comprising:

a body portion having a distal end segment and a proximal end segment and a longitudinal axis extending through the proximal end segment of the body portion;

an engagement barrel coaxial with the longitudinal axis so as to be disposed on the proximal end segment of the body portion to encircle a portion of the longitudinal axis, wherein the engagement barrel is selectively rotatable around the proximal end segment of the body portion; and

a retaining member formed as a curved hook at a distal end of the distal end segment of the body portion, the hook having a partial circular shaped circumference with a gap disposed between a distal end of the retaining member and the distal end segment of the body portion, an end portion of the retaining member is bent outwardly away from the gap, wherein the hook is sized to partially and selectively encircle in a compressive manner an outer circumference of an outer sheath of the surgical access assembly, and wherein the engagement barrel is configured to be operatively connected to a surgical holding arrangement.
