Aerospace articles made from quasi-isotropic chopped prepreg
View Patent ↗Quasi-isotropic chopped prepreg is used to make parts found in aerospace vehicles. Exemplary aerospace parts that are made using quasi-isotropic chopped prepreg include aircraft window frames, wing fairing supports, flange supports, frame gussets, rudder actuator brackets, shear ties, seat pedestals, cargo floor flange supports, storage bin fittings, antenna supports, torque tube pans, handle boxes, side guide fittings, wing box covers and intercostals.
1. An aerospace assembly that is made by a method comprising the steps of:
providing a first aerospace part; and
connecting a composite aerospace part to said first aerospace part wherein said composite aerospace part comprises cured quasi-isotropic chopped prepreg and wherein said composite aerospace part comprises a surface defining a hole and wherein said hole is used to connect said composite aerospace part to said first aerospace part.
2. An aerospace assembly that is made by a method according to claim 1 wherein said composite aerospace part is an aircraft window frame.
3. An aerospace assembly that is made by a method according to claim 1 wherein said cured quasi-isotropic chopped prepreg comprises a resin selected from the group consisting of epoxy, phenolic, bismaleimide and cyanates.
4. An aerospace assembly that is made by a method according to claim 1 wherein said cured quasi-isotropic chopped prepreg comprises fibers selected from the group consisting of carbon, glass, aramid and polyethylene.
5. An aerospace assembly that is made by a method according to claim 1 wherein said cured quasi-isotropic chopped prepreg comprises epoxy resin and carbon fibers.
6. An aerospace assembly that is made by a method comprising the steps of:
providing a first aerospace part;
providing a second aerospace part; and
joining said first and second aerospace parts together with a composite aerospace part that comprises a cured quasi-isotropic chopped prepreg, wherein said composite aerospace part comprises a first portion for attachment to said first aerospace part and a second portion for attachment to said second aerospace part and wherein said first and/or second portion comprises a surface defining a hole.
7. An aerospace assembly that is made by a method according to claim 6 wherein said cured quasi-isotropic chopped prepreg comprises a resin selected from the group consisting of epoxy, phenolic, bismaleimide and cyanates.
8. An aerospace assembly that is made by a method according to claim 6 wherein said cured quasi-isotropic chopped prepreg comprises fibers selected from the group consisting of carbon, glass, aramid and polyethylene.
9. An aerospace assembly that is made by a method according to claim 6 wherein said cured quasi-isotropic chopped prepreg comprises epoxy resin and carbon fibers.
10. An aerospace assembly that is made by a method according to claim 6 wherein said first and second portions of said composite aerospace part are not in planar alignment.
11. An aerospace assembly that is made by a method according to claim 6 wherein said composite aerospace part is selected from the group consisting of wing fairing supports, flange supports, frame gussets, rudder actuator brackets, shear ties, seat pedestals, cargo flange supports, storage bin fittings, antenna supports and intercostals.
12. An aerospace assembly that is made by a method according to claim 11 wherein said composite aerospace part is a flange support that is capable of carrying a load of over 6000 pounds.
13. A composite aerospace part that is made by a method comprising the steps of:
providing a mat of quasi-isotropic chopped prepreg;
molding said mat of quasi-isotropic chopped prepreg into said composite aerospace part; and
forming a surface defining a hole in said composite aerospace part.

A composite aerospace part that is made by a method according to claim 13 wherein said aerospace part is selected from the group consisting of aircraft window frames, wing fairing supports, flange supports, frame gussets, rudder actuator brackets, shear ties, seat pedestals, cargo floor flange supports, storage bin fittings, antenna supports, torque tube pans, handle boxes, side guide fittings, wing box covers and intercostals.
15. A composite aerospace part that is made by a method according to claim 13 wherein said aerospace part is an aircraft window frame.
16. A composite aerospace part that is made by a method according to claim 13 wherein said cured quasi-isotropic chopped prepreg comprises a resin selected from the group consisting of epoxy, phenolic, bismaleimide and cyanates.
17. A composite aerospace part that is made by a method according to claim 13 wherein said cured quasi-isotropic chopped prepreg comprises fibers selected from the group consisting of carbon, glass, aramid and polyethylene.
18. A composite aerospace part that is made by a method according to claim 13 wherein said cured quasi-isotropic chopped prepreg comprises epoxy resin and carbon fibers.
