Abstract

A communication method for embedding a meta-carrier under an original carrier signal with reduced or minimal original carrier signal degradation, the method comprising transmitting an original carrier signal by a transmitter, forming a meta-carrier signal separate from the original carrier signal that contains meta-data about the original carrier signal including one or more characteristics of the original carrier signal configured for use by a receiving device to establish one or more parameters of a receiving device to receive the original carrier signal at the receiving device, and transmitting the meta-carrier signal by the transmitter separate from the original carrier signal such that the meta-carrier signal occupies at least a portion of a bandwidth of the original carrier signal.

Claims (60)

1. A communication method for embedding a meta-carrier under a carrier signal, the method comprising:

forming a composite carrier comprising a meta-carrier signal combined with an original carrier signal, the composite carrier being formed after the meta-carrier signal is modulated and after the original carrier signal is modulated separate from the meta-carrier signal, wherein the meta-carrier signal contains information about the original carrier signal including one or more characteristics of the original carrier signal, the information configured for use by a receiving device to establish one or more parameters of a receiving device to receive or process the original carrier signal at the receiving device;

wherein the meta-carrier signal is extractable at the receiver without demodulating the original carrier signal, wherein the meta-carrier signal is transmitted such that the meta-carrier signal occupies at least a portion of a bandwidth of the original carrier signal.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming the meta-carrier signal to further contain information about at least one of a center frequency and a symbol rate of the original carrier signal.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming the meta-carrier signal to further contain information about at least one of a forward error correction (FEC) rate, a modulation factor, and a roll-off of the original carrier.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming the meta-carrier signal to further contain information about a spectral orientation of the original carrier signal.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming the meta-carrier signal to further contain information about a power level of the original carrier signal.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming the meta-carrier signal to further contain information about a carrier type or a scrambler of the original carrier signal.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming the meta-carrier signal to further contain information about one or more spread spectrum characteristics of the original carrier signal.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming the meta-carrier signal to further contain information configured for use by the receiving device to establish one or more parameters of the receiving device necessary to transmit a return carrier signal back to the transmitter.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the receiving device is operating in an interfered condition.

10. A communication method for extracting a meta-carrier that is embedded under an original carrier signal, the method comprising:

receiving a composite carrier signal by a receiving device, the composite carrier signal comprising an original carrier signal and a meta-carrier signal that occupies at least a portion of a bandwidth of the original carrier signal, wherein the meta-carrier signal is extractable at the receiver without demodulating the original carrier signal;

extracting the meta-carrier signal, the meta-carrier signal comprising meta-data about the original carrier signal including one or more characteristics of the original carrier signal;

configuring a demodulator at the receiving device to demodulate the original carrier signal based on the meta-data extracted from the meta-carrier signal;

demodulating the original carrier signal using the demodulator; and

decoding the original carrier signal using a decoder.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising canceling the original carrier signal from a plurality of interfering carrier signals using a canceller.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the meta-data further comprises information about the transmitter, the method further comprising the receiver based on the information about the transmitter to transmit a return carrier signal from the receiver back to the transmitter.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about at least one of a center frequency and a symbol rate of a return channel to the transmitter.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about at least one of a forward error correction (FEC) rate, a modulation factor, and a roll-off of a return channel to the transmitter.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about a spectral orientation a return channel to the transmitter.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about a power level of a return channel to the transmitter.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about a carrier type or a scrambler of a return channel to the transmitter.

18. The method of claim 12 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about one or more spread spectrum characteristics of a return channel to the transmitter.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about a number of channels available for use as a return channel to the transmitter.

20. The method of claim 12 , wherein the meta-data further comprises one or more control messages configured to control a characteristic of one or more carrier signals transmitted between the transmitter and receiver.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the one or more control messages adjusts a characteristic of the one or more carrier signals to reduce off-axis signal emissions.

22. The method of claim 10 , wherein the meta-carrier signal is extracted under an interfered condition.

23. A communication system for embedding a meta-carrier under an original carrier signal, the system comprising:

an encoder that encodes meta-data containing information about an original carrier signal;

a modulator that receives the encoded meta-data from the encoder, modulates the encoded meta-data separate from the meta-carrier signal, using a modulation format;

a spreader that receives the modulated meta-carrier signal from the modulator, spreads the modulated meta-carrier such that a spread meta-carrier signal results;

a meta-carrier embedding device that receives the modulated spread meta-carrier signal, combines the modulated spread meta-carrier signal with a modulated original carrier signal to create a composite carrier signal;

a transmitter configured to transmit the composite carrier signal;

wherein the meta-carrier signal is extractable from the composite carrier without demodulating the original carrier signal, contains information about the original carrier signal including one or more characteristics of the original carrier signal, the information configured for use by a receiving device to establish one or more parameters of the receiving device necessary to receive the original carrier signal, and is transmitted such that the meta-carrier signal occupies at least a portion of a bandwidth of the original carrier signal.

24. The system of claim 23 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about at least one of a center frequency and a symbol rate of the original carrier signal.

25. The system of claim 23 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about at least one of a forward error correction (FEC) rate, a modulation factor, and a roll-off of the original carrier.

26. The system of claim 23 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about a spectral orientation of the original carrier signal.

27. The system of claim 23 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about a power level of the original carrier signal.

28. The system of claim 23 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about a carrier type or a scrambler of the original carrier signal.

29. The system of claim 23 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about one or more spread spectrum characteristics of the original carrier signal.

30. The system of claim 23 , wherein the meta-data further comprises information that is usable by the receiving device to establish one or more parameters of the receiving device necessary to transmit a return carrier signal back to the transmitter.

31. The system of claim 23 , wherein the meta-carrier signal is extractable under an interfered condition.

32. A communication system for extracting a meta-carrier that is embedded under an original carrier signal, the system comprising:

a receiving device configured to receive a composite carrier signal, the composite carrier signal comprised of an original carrier signal and a meta-carrier signal that occupies at least a portion of a bandwidth of the original carrier signal, wherein the meta-carrier signal is extractable at the receiver without demodulating the original carrier signal and contains information about the original carrier signal including one or more characteristics of the original carrier signal the information configured for use by the receiving device to establish one or more parameters of the receiving device necessary to receive the original carrier signal;

a demodulator configured to demodulate the original carrier signal based on the information extracted from the meta-carrier signal; and

a decoder configured to decode the original carrier signal.

33. The system of claim 32 , further comprising a canceller configured to cancel the original carrier signal from a plurality of interfering carrier signals.

34. The system of claim 32 , wherein the meta-data further comprises information that is usable by the receiving device to establish one or more parameters of the receiving device necessary to transmit a return carrier signal back to the transmitter.

35. The system of claim 34 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about at least one of a center frequency and a symbol rate of a return channel to the transmitter.

36. The system of claim 34 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about at least one of a forward error correction (FEC) rate, a modulation factor, and a roll-off of a return channel to the transmitter.

37. The system of claim 34 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about a spectral orientation a return channel to the transmitter.

38. The system of claim 34 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about a power level of a return channel to the transmitter.

39. The system of claim 34 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about a carrier type or a scrambler of a return channel to the transmitter.

40. The system of claim 34 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about one or more spread spectrum characteristics of a return channel to the transmitter.

41. The method of claim 34 , wherein the meta-data comprises information about a number of channels available for use as a return channel to the transmitter.

42. The system of claim 34 , wherein the meta-data further comprises one or more control messages configured to control a characteristic of one or more carrier signals transmitted between the transmitter and receiver.

43. The system of claim 42 , wherein the one or more control messages adjusts a characteristic of the one or more carrier signals to reduce off-axis signal emissions.

44. The system of claim 32 , wherein the meta-carrier signal is extractable under an interfered condition.
