Abstract

Methods and apparatus for making and using tools, for example concrete cutting blades. The tool includes a first layer and second layer that are oppositely disposed. The first and second layers include working surfaces that support at least one working element when the working element is applied to a work piece. Additionally, an intermediate structure is included between the first and second layers. The intermediate structure can include a plurality of components extending in the area between the structural surfaces and the working surfaces.

Claims (30)

1. A tool comprising:

a first and second oppositely disposed layers, wherein each of the first and second layers includes structural surfaces for being supported on a drive assembly, and wherein each of the first and second layers includes working surfaces for supporting at least one working element when the at least one working element is applied to a work piece;

an intermediate structure between the first and second layers, wherein the intermediate structure includes a plurality of components extending in an area between the structural surfaces and the respective working surfaces, and wherein the intermediate structure is less than co-extensive with the first and second oppositely disposed layers; and

a continuous weld ring at least partially interposed between a perimeter of the first and second layers.

2. A tool having a circular shape comprising

a lamination of at least two layers including a first layer and a second layer and an adhesive layer;

a medial section and an additional adhesive layer, wherein the adhesive layer and the additional adhesive layer are located on opposite sides of the medial section and the first layer and the second layer are in registration with one of the respective adhesive layer and additional adhesive layer;

a continuous weld ring at least partially interposed between a perimeter of the first and second layers; and

a plurality of arc-shaped cutting segments having an inner arc shape and an outer arc shape, wherein the arc-shaped cutting segments are coupled to the continuous weld ring.

3. The tool of claim 2 , wherein the medial section comprises a metal.

4. The tool of claim 3 , wherein the metal is a honeycomb structure.

5. The tool of claim 2 , wherein the medial section is a composite material.

6. The tool of claim 2 , wherein the continuous weld ring is bonded to the medial section.

7. The tool of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of cutting segments are also welded to an outer perimeter of the continuous weld ring.

8. The tool of claim 2 , further comprising an inner ring, wherein the medial section is coupled on an inner perimeter to the inner ring.

9. The tool of claim 8 , wherein the inner ring includes central opening for accommodating a drive shaft or arbor.

10. The tool of claim 8 , wherein the inner ring includes a plurality of cavities.

11. A tool having a circular shape comprising

a lamination of at least two layers including a first layer and a second layer and an adhesive layer;

a continuous weld ring at least partially interposed between a perimeter of the first and second layers; and

a plurality of arc-shaped cutting segments having an inner arc shape and an outer arc shape, wherein the arc-shaped cutting segments are coupled to the continuous weld ring.

12. The tool of claim 11 , further comprising:

a medial section and an additional adhesive layer, wherein the adhesive layer and the additional adhesive layer are located on opposite sides of the medial section and the first layer and the second layer are in registration with one of the respective adhesive layer and additional adhesive layer.

13. The tool of claim 12 , wherein the medial section comprises a metal.

14. The tool of claim 13 , wherein the metal is a honeycomb structure.

15. The tool of claim 12 , wherein the medial section is a composite material.

16. The tool of claim 12 , wherein the continuous weld ring is bonded to the medial section.

17. The tool of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of cutting segments are also welded to an outer perimeter of the continuous weld ring.

18. The tool of claim 11 , further comprising a honeycomb element that is placed in registration with the weld ring.

19. The tool of claim 11 wherein the outer perimeter of the weld ring is flush with the outer perimeter of the first layer and the second layer.
