Abstract

A tray forming apparatus forms a blank into a tray having a double glued side wall construction for providing a desirable strength to the tray. A platen drives the blank through a forming rails which fold the blank into a partially formed tray having bottom, end and side walls, and inside corner supports formed about the platen. The platen is retracted prior to folding arms further extended portions of the partially formed tray. A compression plate and the folding arms are biased against adhesive portions of the tray for forming a fully formed tray having a double glued side wall construction.

Claims (67)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a platen operable for moving between a first position proximate and in spaced relation to a blank and a second position downstream therefrom, the platen being biased against the blank for moving the blank downstream to the second position;

a forming rail positioned downstream the first position for receiving the blank moving against the forming rail for folding portions of the blank, wherein the forming rail partially folds peripheral portions of the blank and secures the blank into a partially formed tray, wherein side walls of the partially formed tray are fully formed;

a first folding arm movably positioned for folding an extended portion of the partially formed tray, wherein the first folding arm is movable between a first position and a second position;

at least one compression member carried in spaced relation to the partially formed tray;

a fixed plate carried in spaced relation to the at least one compression member, the fixed plate and the at least one compression member forming a passage therebetween; and

a second folding arm positioned for biasing against the extended portion of the partially formed tray, wherein the fixed plate is positioned for guiding the extended portion along the surface of the fixed plate onto a tray wall for providing a fully formed tray.

An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein a proximal portion of the forming rail partially folds the peripheral portions of the blank and a distal portion of the forming rail secures the blank into the partially formed tray, the distal portion having a side folding rail portion opposing the guide plate for receiving the blank peripheral portions therebetween.

An apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the first folding arm is positioned proximate the distal portion of the forming rail and downstream the proximal portion thereof, wherein the platen moves along a path between the first position and the second position, and wherein the first folding arm rotates in and out of the path of the travel of the platen.

4. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the fixed plate has a surface thereof generally parallel to the path of the platen.

5. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the second folding arm is movable through the passage and folds the extended portion through the passage.

6. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the second folding arm is movable along the passage and folds the extended portion along the passage.

7. An apparatus comprising:

a platen operable for moving between a first position proximate and in spaced relation to a blank and a second position downstream therefrom, the platen being biased against the blank for a driving of the blank downstream to the second position;

at least one guide plate carried by the platen further defining a platen periphery and for providing a compression surface;

a forming rail positioned downstream the first position for receiving the blank moving against the forming rail for folding portions of the blank, wherein the forming rail partially folds peripheral portions of the blank and secures the blank into a partially formed tray;

a first folding arm movably positioned for folding an extended portion of the partially formed tray;

at least one compression member carried in spaced relation to the partially formed tray;

a fixed plate carried in spaced relation to the at least one compression member and forming a passage therebetween; and

a second folding arm positioned for folding at least a portion of the extended portion of the partially formed tray through the passage, wherein the fixed plate is positioned for guiding the at least a portion of the extended portion onto a tray wall for providing a fully formed tray.

8. An apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein a proximal portion of the forming rail partially folds peripheral portions of the blank and a distal portion of the forming rail secures the blank into the partially formed tray.

9. An apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the first folding arm is positioned proximate the distal portion of the forming rail and downstream the proximal portion.

10. An apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the second folding arm is movable and folds at least a portion of the extended portion through the passage.

11. An apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the second folding arm is movable along the passage and folds at least a portion of the extended portion along the passage.

12. An apparatus comprising:

a platen operable for moving along a path between a first position proximate and in spaced relation to a blank and a second position downstream therefrom, the platen configured to move the blank downstream to the second position;

a forming rail positioned downstream the first position for receiving the blank moving against the forming rail for folding portions of the blank, wherein the forming rail partially folds peripheral portions of the blank and secures the blank into a partially formed tray;

a first folding arm movably positioned for folding an extended portion of the partially formed tray;

a fixed plate carried proximate the first folding arm;

at least one compression member carried in spaced relation to the fixed plate, wherein a passage is formed between the at least one compression member and the fixed plate; and

a second folding arm positioned for folding at least a portion of the extended portion of the partially formed tray, wherein the fixed plate is positioned for guiding the at least a portion of the extended portion through the passage onto a tray wall for providing a fully formed tray.

13. An apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein a proximal portion of the forming rail partially folds the peripheral portions of the blank and a distal portion of the forming rail secures the blank into the partially formed tray.

14. An apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein the first folding arm is positioned proximate the distal portion of the forming rail and downstream the proximal portion thereof

15. An apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the second folding arm is movable and configured to fold the at least a portion of the extended portion through the passage.

16. An apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the second folding arm is movable along the passage and folds the at least a portion of the extended portion along the passage.

17. An apparatus comprising:

a conveyor dimension for conveying a blank to a first position;

an applicator positioned proximate the conveyor for applying an adhesive to a selected portion of the blank;

a platen configured to move between the first position proximate and in spaced relation to the blank and a second position downstream therefrom, the platen being biased against the blank for driving the blank downstream to the second position;

a forming rail positioned downstream the first position for receiving the blank moving against the forming rail for folding portions of the blank, wherein the forming rail partially folds peripheral portions of the blank and secures the blank into a partially formed tray;

a first folding arm movably positioned for folding an extended portion of the partially formed tray, wherein the first folding arm is movable between a first position and a second position;

at least one compression member carried in spaced relation to the partially formed tray;

a fixed plate carried in spaced relation to the at least one compression member, the fixed plate and the at least one compression member forming a passage therebetween; and

a second folding arm positioned for folding at least a portion of the extended portion of the partially formed tray through the passage, wherein the fixed plate is positioned for guiding the at least a portion of the extended portion along the surface of the fixed plate onto a tray wall for providing a fully formed tray.

18. An apparatus according to claim 17 , wherein a proximal portion of the forming rail partially folds the peripheral portions of the blank and a distal portion of the forming rail secures the blank into the partially formed tray.

An apparatus according to claim 18 , wherein the first folding arm is positioned proximate the distal portion of the forming rail and downstream the proximal portion thereof, wherein the platen moves along a path between the first position and the second position, and wherein the first folding arm rotates within the path of travel of the platen.

20. An apparatus according to claim 17 , wherein the fixed plate has a surface thereof generally parallel to the path of the platen.

21. An apparatus according to claim 17 , wherein the second folding arm is movable and configured to fold the at least a portion of the extended portion through the passage.

22. An apparatus according to clam 17 , wherein the second folding arm is movable along the passage and folds the at least a portion of the extended portion along the passage.

23. An apparatus comprising:

a platen operable for moving between a first position proximate and in spaced relation to a blank and a second position downstream therefrom, the platen being biased against the blank for a driving of the blank downstream to the second position;

at least one guide plate carried by the platen further defining a platen periphery and for providing a compression surface;

a forming rail positioned downstream the first position for receiving the blank moving against the forming rail for folding portions of the blank, wherein the forming rail partially folds peripheral portions of the blank and secures the blank into a partially formed tray;

a first folding arm movably positioned for folding an extended portion of the partially formed tray;

a first plate carried in spaced relation to the partially formed tray;

a second plate carried in spaced relation to the first plate and forming a passage therebetween;

a second folding arm positioned for folding at least a portion of the extended portion of the partially formed tray through the passage, wherein the second plate is positioned for guiding the at least a portion of the extended portion onto a tray wall for providing a fully formed tray.

24. An apparatus according to claim 23 , wherein a proximal portion of the forming rail partially folds peripheral portions of the blank and a distal portion of the forming rail secures the blank into the partially formed tray.

25. An apparatus according to claim 24 , wherein the first folding arm is positioned proximate the distal portion of the forming rail and downstream the proximal portion.

26. An apparatus according to claim 23 , wherein the second folding arm is movable and folds at least a portion of the extended portion through the passage.

27. An apparatus according to claim 23 , wherein the second folding arm is movable along the passage and folds at least a portion of the extended portion along the passage.

28. An apparatus comprising:

a platen operable for moving between a first position proximate and in spaced relation to a blank and a second position downstream therefrom, the platen being biased against the blank for driving the blank downstream to the second position;

a forming rail positioned downstream the first position for receiving the blank moving against the forming rail for folding portions of the blank, wherein the forming rail partially folds peripheral portions of the blank and secures the blank into a partially formed tray;

at least one compression member carried in spaced relation to the partially formed tray;

a fixed plate carried in spaced relation to the at least one compression member, the fixed plate and the at least one compression member forming a passage therebetween; and

a folding arm positioned for folding at least a portion of an extended portion of the partially formed tray through the passage, wherein the fixed plate is positioned for guiding the at least a portion of the extended portion onto a tray wall for providing a fully formed tray.
