Abstract

A small, low-profile plug connector for use with electronic devices provides a latching member with a pair of hooks that engage mating holes in a guide frame, and which can be easily delatched from the guide frame or opposing connector or housing. The hooks lock the plug connector into engagement with the frame or housing, but are readily released by way of a simple ramp and lobe mechanism in the plug connector. The ramp and lobe mechanism converts horizontal movement of a pull tab-like actuator into vertical movement of a latching member such that the hooks are lifted upward and disengaged from the guide frame or housing.

Claims (18)

1. A plug connector comprising:

a connector body having a first portion with mating end for mating with an opposing connector and a second portion with a rear end disposed opposite the mating end, the second portion having a top surface with a channel extending along a substantial portion of the second portion;

an actuator positioned in the channel, the actuator configured to translate in a horizontal manner; and

a latch mounted to the second portion, the latch having a first end that extends over the first portion and includes an engagement hook, wherein the latch is T-shaped and is fastened to the second portion on two sides of the channel and the first end of the latch is configured to translate in a vertical direction in response to horizontal translation of the actuator.

2. The plug connector of claim 1 , wherein the first portion is sized smaller than the second portion.

3. The plug connector of claim 1 , wherein the actuator has a loop-shaped end.

4. The plug connector of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is configured to translate in a direction extending from the first end to the rear end.

5. The plug connector of claim 1 , wherein the channel has a top surface and the first end of the latch is positioned below the top surface.

6. The plug connector of claim 1 , wherein the actuator has an elongated slot and the channel includes a stop positioned in the elongated slot, the stop and slot sized to limit horizontal translation of the actuator.

7. The plug connector of claim 1 , wherein the actuator has an end with an enlarged cam and the channel has a ramp and horizontal translation of the enlarged cam over the ramp causes the latch to translate in the vertical direction.

8. The plug connector of claim 7 , wherein the enlarged cam and the ramp are configured to bias the actuator in a first position such that the actuator will rest in the first position when a horizontal force is not applied to the actuator.

9. A plug connector comprising:

a connector body having a first portion with mating end for mating with an opposing connector and a second portion with a rear end disposed opposite the mating end, the second portion having a top surface with a channel extending along a substantial portion of the second portion;

an actuator positioned in the channel, the actuator configured to translate in a horizontal manner; and

a latch mounted to the second portion, the latch having a first end that extends over the first portion and includes an engagement hook, wherein the actuator has an end with an enlarged cam and the channel has a ramp and horizontal translation of the enlarged cam over the ramp causes the latch to translate in the vertical direction.

10. The plug connector of claim 9 , wherein the enlarged cam and the ramp are configured to bias the actuator in a first position such that the actuator will rest in the first position when a horizontal force is not applied to the actuator.

11. The plug connector of claim 9 , wherein the channel has a top surface and the first end of the latch is positioned below the top surface.

12. The plug connector of claim 9 , wherein the actuator has an elongated slot and the channel includes a stop positioned in the elongated slot, the stop and slot sized to limit horizontal translation of the actuator.
