Pressure activated safety valve with grooved membrane
View Patent ↗A pressure activated valve comprises a valve housing defining a lumen for receiving bodily fluids therein and a flexible membrane disposed in the valve housing. The flexible membrane includes a slit extending therethrough so that the flexible membrane may be moved between an open and a closed configuration based on fluid pressure within the lumen. A nonthrombogenic coating may be formed on fluid contacting surfaces of the flexible membrane.
1. A method for infusing fluid to a target site within a human body, the method comprising:
providing a vascular access catheter having a pressure activated valve, the pressure activated valve comprising:
a valve housing defining a lumen,
a first flexible membrane disposed in the valve housing, the first flexible membrane having a substantially elliptical disk shape, the first flexible membrane comprising:
a first proximal surface, a first distal surface and the first flexible membrane therebetween,
a first slit extending through the first flexible membrane so that the first flexible membrane may be moved between an open and closed configuration based on a fluid pressure within the lumen, and
a proximal groove disposed on the first proximal surface and adjacent to the first slit to direct fluid flow towards the first slit; and
infusing fluid through the pressure activated valve and to the target site.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first slit is linear.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first slit at least partially curved.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pressure activated valve further comprises:
a second flexible membrane disposed in the valve housing, the second flexible membrane comprising:
a second proximal surface, a second distal surface and the second flexible membrane therebetween,
a second slit extending through the second flexible membrane so that the second flexible membrane may be moved between an open and closed configuration based on a fluid pressure within the lumen,
wherein the first distal surface of the first flexible membrane is in contact with the second proximal surface of the second flexible membrane.
5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the first and second slits are both linear and aligned in parallel with a common axis.
6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the first slit is linear and the second slit is at least partially curved.
7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the first and second slits are at least partially curved.
8. The method of claim 4 , wherein the pressure activated valve further comprises:
a third flexible membrane disposed in the valve housing, the third flexible membrane comprising:
a third proximal surface, a third distal surface and the third flexible membrane therebetween,
a third slit extending through the third flexible membrane so that the third flexible membrane may be moved between an open and closed configuration based on a fluid pressure within the lumen,
wherein the second distal surface of the second flexible membrane is in contact with the third proximal surface of the third flexible membrane.
9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the third flexible membrane further comprises:
a distal groove disposed on the third distal surface and adjacent to the third slit.
