Abstract

A surgical instrument includes a reusable component and a limited-use component releasably engagable with the reusable component. The reusable component includes a detecting member and is configured to connect to a source of energy. The limited-use component is transitionable from a first state to a second state. The detecting member is configured to detect a response of the limited-use component for determining the state of the limited-use component. Energy is permitted to be supplied to the limited-use component when it is determined that the limited-use component is disposed in the first state. Energy is inhibited from being supplied to the limited-use component when it is determined that the limited-use component is disposed in the second state.

Claims (8)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a reusable handle configured to connect to a source of energy;

a limited-use needle assembly releasably engagable with the reusable handle, the limited-use needle assembly including a needle body defining a hollow interior, the needle body transitionable from a first state, wherein the needle body defines a first frequency, the first frequency being a natural frequency of the needle body, to a second state, wherein the needle body defines a second frequency different from the first frequency; and

a detecting member disposed within the reusable handle and configured to determine the state of the needle body,

wherein the detecting member is configured to emit an acoustic signal into the hollow interior defined by the needle body and detect the state of the needle body based on a response to the emitted acoustic signal, wherein energy is permitted to be supplied to the limited-use needle assembly when it is determined that the needle body is disposed in the first state, and wherein energy is inhibited from being supplied to the limited-use needle assembly when it is determined that the needle body is disposed in the second state.

2. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the limited-use needle assembly is configured to supply energy to tissue to ablate tissue.

3. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , further comprising control circuitry disposed within the reusable handle and including a memory configured to store the first frequency, the control circuitry configured to receive the detected frequency from the detecting member and to compare the detected frequency to the first frequency stored in the memory for determining the state of the needle body.

4. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the response to the emitted acoustic signal is a standing wave correlated to a natural frequency of the needle body.
