Abstract

A trocar comprises a retention cannula comprising an inverted or incised retention pattern disposed thereon. Embodiments of the incised cannula exhibit reduced tissue trauma compared with screw-threaded cannula, improved fixation and/or retention compared with an unthreaded cannula, and good sealing between the cannula and the incision.

Claims (40)

1. A trocar comprising:

a retention cannula comprising:

a proximal end, a distal end, and a longitudinal axis;

a cannula body between the proximal end of the cannula and the distal end, the cannula body having an outer diameter, and the cannula body comprising a cannula wall defining a lumen extending between the proximal end and the distal end; and

an inverted, tissue retention pattern extending into the cannula wall, the tissue retention pattern comprising a continuous inverted pattern defined by a plurality of flat cuts extending generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the retention cannula, and a plurality of diagonal cuts extending generally transverse to the longitudinal axis of the retention cannula and positioned such that each of the plurality of flat cuts is connected to an adjacent one of the plurality of flat cuts by a diagonal cut; and

wherein an outer diameter of the inverted pattern is not greater than the outer diameter of the cannula body.

2. The trocar of claim 1 , further comprising a seal housing coupled to the proximal end of the retention cannula.

3. The trocar of claim 1 , wherein the retention cannula comprises at least one of a polycarbonate material and a polyester material.

4. The trocar of claim 1 , wherein the retention cannula is injection molded such that the tissue retention pattern is formed contemporaneously with the cannula body.

5. The trocar of claim 1 , wherein the cannula wall has a thickness and the tissue retention pattern has a depth and wherein the depth is less than about half of the thickness of the cannula wall.

6. The trocar of claim 1 , wherein the cannula wall has a thickness and the tissue retention pattern has a depth and wherein the depth is between about one third and about one half of the thickness of the cannula wall.

7. The trocar of claim 1 , wherein the cannula wall has a thickness and the tissue retention pattern has a depth and wherein the cannula wall has a thickness of between about 0.045 inches and about 0.05 inches, and the depth of the thread root is between about 0.015 inches and about 0.02 inches.

8. The trocar of claim 1 , wherein the tissue retention pattern further comprises a plurality of non-continuous diagonal cuts disposed between adjacent diagonal cuts of the continuous inverted pattern.

9. The trocar of claim 1 , wherein the tissue retention pattern further comprises a plurality of non-continuous flat cuts disposed between adjacent flat cuts of the continuous inverted pattern.

10. The trocar of claim 9 , wherein each flat cut of the plurality of non-continuous flat cuts extends circumferentially about an arc segment defining an angle less than approximately 180 degrees.

11. The trocar of claim 1 , wherein the inverted pattern comprises a thread root defining the outer diameter of the inverted pattern and a thread tip defining the outer diameter of the cannula body.

12. The trocar of claim 11 , wherein the inverted pattern comprises at least one of a fillet and a chamfer.

13. A trocar comprising:

a retention cannula comprising:

a proximal end, a distal end, and a longitudinal axis; and

a cannula body between the proximal end of the cannula and the distal end, the cannula body comprising:

a generally cylindrical cannula wall having a first outer diameter and defining a lumen extending between the proximal end and the distal end;

a retention region formed in the cannula wall, the retention region having a second outer diameter greater than the first outer diameter; and

an inverted, tissue retention pattern extending into the cannula wall at the retention region, the tissue retention pattern comprising:

a continuous inverted pattern defined by a plurality of flat cuts extending generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the retention cannula, each of the plurality of flat cuts connected to an adjacent one of the plurality of flat cuts by a diagonal cut extending generally transverse to the longitudinal axis of the retention cannula; and

a plurality of isolated flat cuts disposed between adjacent flat cuts of the continuous inverted pattern.

14. The trocar of claim 13 , wherein the second outer diameter is greater than the first outer diameter by approximately 0.005 inches.

15. The trocar of claim 13 , wherein the cannula wall has a thickness and wherein the retention region comprises a region of relatively high cannula wall thickness compared to the thickness of the remainder of the cannula wall.

16. The trocar of claim 13 , wherein the cannula wall has the first outer diameter at the distal end of the retention cannula.

17. A trocar comprising:

a retention cannula comprising:

a proximal end, a distal end, and a longitudinal axis;

a cannula body between the proximal end of the cannula and the distal end, the cannula body having an outer diameter, and the cannula body comprising a cannula wall defining a lumen extending between the proximal end and the distal end; and

an inverted pattern extending into the cannula wall such that an outer diameter of the inverted pattern is not greater than the outer diameter of the cannula body, the inverted pattern comprising:

a continuous inverted pattern defined by a plurality of flat cuts extending generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the retention cannula, each of the plurality of flat cuts connected to an adjacent one of the plurality of flat cuts by a diagonal cut extending generally transverse to the longitudinal axis of the retention cannula;

a thread root defining the outer diameter of the inverted pattern; and

a thread tip defining the outer diameter of the cannula body.

18. The trocar of claim 17 , wherein the thread root of the inverted pattern has a width defined by first segments having a first width and second segments having a second width different from the first width.

19. The trocar of claim 17 , wherein the thread tip of the inverted pattern has a width defined by first segments having a first width and second segments having a second width different from the first width.

20. The trocar of claim 17 , wherein the inverted pattern further comprises a non-continuous inverted pattern defined by a plurality of isolated cuts positioned between one of adjacent flat cuts of the continuous inverted pattern and adjacent diagonal cuts of the continuous inverted pattern.
