Abstract

Embodiments described herein may include systems and method for monitoring physiological parameters of a patient. Specifically, embodiments disclose wireless, reusable, rechargeable medical sensors that include an inductive coil coupled to a rechargeable battery. Additionally, embodiments disclose systems and methods for recharging and disinfecting the disclosed medical sensors.

Claims (32)

1 . A patient monitoring system comprising:

a plurality of radio-frequency identification tags configured to be coupled to respective patients and programmed with respective identification data of the patients;

a plurality of wireless sensors configured to obtain physiological signals related to each respective patient, each wireless sensor comprising a radio-frequency transceiver configured to receive the identification data from the radio-frequency identification tag and to transmit a digital signal and the identification data of the patient; and

a central station comprising:

a wireless transceiver configured to receive, from the radio-frequency transceivers of the plurality of wireless sensors, the digital signals and identification data of each respective patient; and

a processor configured to calculate physiological parameters of each respective patient based at least in part upon the digital signals and to couple the physiological parameters with the corresponding identification data of each respective patient.

2 . The system, as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the wireless sensor is a pulse oximetry sensor or a regional oximetry sensor.

3 . The system, as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the wireless sensor comprises a memory unit configured to store the identification data of the patient received from the radio-frequency identification tag.

4 . The system, as set forth in claim 3 , wherein the wireless sensor is configured to provide a user-perceivable indication after the identification data of each respective patient is stored in the memory unit.

5 . The system, as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the central station comprises a display configured to display the physiological parameters and identification data of each respective patient.

6 . The system, as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the central station is remote from the wireless sensor.

7 . The system, as set forth in claim 6 , comprising a wireless node configured to receive the digital signal and identification data transmitted from at least one radio-frequency transceiver of at least one of the plurality of wireless sensors and to transmit the digital signal and identification data to the wireless transceiver of the central station.

8 . The system, as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the central station is configured to transmit the physiological parameter and the identification data of each respective patient to a display located in the corresponding patient room of each respective patient, and wherein no monitors capable of calculating the physiological parameter are located in the patient room.

9 . The system, as set forth in claim 8 , where in the display is a television.

10 . The system, as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the central station comprises a multi-parameter monitor configured to display physiological parameters and identification data for different types of sensors.

11 . The system, as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises an inductive coil configured to inductively receive an electrical current from a second inductive coil and to convert the electrical current to charging power.

12 . A method of synchronizing a sensor with a radio-frequency identification tag of a patient comprising:

transmitting, via a radio-frequency transceiver disposed on the sensor, an interrogation signal to the radio-frequency identification tag;

receiving, via the radio-frequency transceiver, an identification signal from the radio-frequency identification tag, wherein the identification signal comprises patient identification data programmed in the radio-frequency identification tag; and

storing, via a processor, the patient identification data in a memory unit of the sensor.

13 . The method, as set forth in claim 12 , comprising decoding, via the radio-frequency transceiver, the identification signal, wherein decoding comprising determining the patient identification data programmed in the radio-frequency identification tag.

14 . The method, as set forth in claim 12 , wherein receiving the identification signal comprises receiving a backscattered identification signal from a passive radio-frequency identification tag.

15 . The method, as set forth in claim 12 , comprising filtering and amplifying, via the radio-frequency transceiver, the backscattered identification signal.

16 . The method, as set forth in claim 12 , comprising providing a user-perceivable indication of a successful synching.

17 . The method, as set forth in claim 16 , wherein the user-perceivable indication is a beep, a light, or a combination thereof.

18 . A method, comprising:

receiving, via a wireless transceiver, patient identification data from a sensor, wherein the patient identification data is configured to be programmed in a radio-frequency identification tag of a patient;

receiving, via a wireless transceiver, physiological signals of the patient from the sensor;

calculating, via a processor, a physiological parameter of the patient based at least in part on the received physiological signals; and

coupling, via a processor, the physiological parameter and the patient identification data.

19 . The method, as set forth in claim 18 , comprising displaying the physiological parameter and the patient identification data on a display, wherein the display is remote from the sensor.

20 . The method, as set forth in claim 19 , comprising, sending, via the wireless transceiver, the physiological parameter and the patient identification data to a display, wherein the display is local to the sensor.
