Brush holder apparatus, brush assembly, and method
View Patent ↗Devices and methods of use for brush holder assemblies are disclosed. Brush holder assemblies including a mounting block and a brush holder are disclosed. Also illustrated is a brush holder assembly including a first portion in sliding engagement with a second portion. In some embodiments the brush holder includes a channel, such that at least a portion of the mounting block is disposed within the channel of the brush holder.
1. A brush holder assembly for an electrical machine, the brush holder assembly comprising:
a stationary part for securing to a base member of the electrical machine;
a brush holder for receiving a brush therein, the brush holder being removably engageable to the stationary part to position a brush in contact with a conductive surface of the electrical machine, the brush holder including a receiver component for mating with the stationary part; and
a brush disposable in the brush holder including an electrical lead extending from the brush to a terminal;
wherein the terminal moves into direct contact with the stationary part to automatically complete an electrical pathway between the brush and the stationary part when the receiver component of the brush holder is engaged with the stationary part and the electrical pathway between the terminal and the stationary part is automatically broken when the receiver component of the brush holder is disengaged from the stationary part.
2. The brush holder assembly of claim 1 , wherein the brush holder is removable from the stationary part by pivoting a first portion of the brush holder relative to a second portion of the brush holder.
3. The brush holder assembly of claim 2 , wherein the brush holder includes a handle attached to the first portion to pivot the first portion relative to the second portion.
4. The brush holder assembly of claim 3 , wherein pivoting the first portion relative to the second portion in a first direction moves the receiver component toward the stationary part, and pivoting the first portion relative to the second portion in a second direction moves the receiver component away from the stationary part.
5. The brush holder assembly of claim 3 , wherein pivoting the first portion relative to the second portion in a first direction moves the terminal toward the stationary part, and pivoting the first portion relative to the second portion in a second direction moves the terminal away from the stationary part.
6. The brush holder assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a spring having a coiled portion and an elongate portion, wherein the elongate portion of the spring is positionable between the receiver component and the brush positionable within the brush holder.
7. The brush holder assembly of claim 6 , wherein the coiled portion of the spring is positionable against an upper surface of the brush positionable within the brush holder.
8. The brush holder assembly of claim 7 , wherein the spring is configured to press the brush into contact with the conductive surface of the electrical machine.
9. The brush holder assembly of claim 1 , wherein the terminal is configured to clip to an end portion of the receiver component.
10. The brush holder assembly of claim 1 , wherein the stationary part includes first and second opposing sides facing in opposite directions configured to face first and second opposing sides of the receiver component, respectively, when the brush holder is engaged to the stationary part.
11. The brush holder assembly of claim 10 , wherein the first and second opposing sides of the stationary part are generally parallel.
12. The brush holder assembly of claim 11 , wherein the first and second opposing sides of the receiver component are generally parallel.
