Abstract

A blended yarn comprises a plurality of first fibers and a plurality of second fibers. A coefficient of friction of the second fibers is greater than a coefficient of friction of the first fibers. Abrasion resistance characteristics of the second fibers are greater than abrasion resistance properties of the first fibers. A gripping ability of the second fibers is greater than a gripping ability of the first fibers. The plurality of second fibers are combined with the plurality of first fibers such that the first fibers extend along the length of the blended yarn and the second fibers do not extend along the length of the blended yarn at least a portion of the second fibers are engaged with and extend from the plurality of first fibers effectively to define surface characteristics of the blended yarn.

Claims (55)

1. A blended yarn comprising:

a plurality of first fibers; and

a plurality of second fibers, where

a coefficient of friction of the second fibers is greater than a coefficient of friction of the first fibers,

abrasion resistance characteristics of the second fibers are greater than abrasion resistance properties of the first fibers, and

a gripping ability of the second fibers is greater than a gripping ability of the first fibers; wherein

the plurality of second fibers are combined with the plurality of first fibers such that

the first fibers extend along the length of the blended yarn and the second fibers do not extend along the length of the blended yarn, and

at least a portion of the second fibers are engaged with and extend from the plurality of first fibers effectively to define surface characteristics of the blended yarn; wherein

the second fibers are polyester fibers.

2. A blended yarn as recited in claim 1 , in which the second fibers at least partly surround the first fibers.

3. The blended yarn as recited in claim 1 , in which the first fibers form a core and the second fibers surround the first fibers.

4. A blended yarn as recited in claim 1 , in which the first and second fibers are combined using a process wherein at least some of the second fibers extend at least partly around some of the first fibers.

5. A blended yarn as recited in claim 1 , in which at least a plurality of the first fibers are continuous and at least a plurality of the second fibers are discontinuous.

6. A blended yarn as recited in claim 1 , in which the blended yarn comprises about sixty to eighty percent by weight of the first fibers and about twenty to forty percent by weight of the second fibers.

7. A blended yarn as recited in claim 1 , in which the first fibers are HMPE fibers.

8. A braided rope formed from a plurality of blended yarns as recited in claim 1 , wherein, when the rope contacts the structural member, the second fibers of the blended yarns are primarily in contact with the structural member and the first set of fibers substantially bear tension loads on the rope.

9. A rope formed from a plurality of blended yarns as recited in claim 1 , in which the rope comprises a core and a jacket.

10. A rope formed from a plurality of blended yarns as recited in claim 1 , in which the rope is a double braided rope.

11. A rope formed from a plurality of blended yarns as recited in claim 1 , in which a plurality of blended yarns are combined to form a twisted rope.

12. A rope formed from a plurality of blended yarns as recited in claim 1 , in which:

the plurality of the blended yarns are combined to form a plurality of strands; and

the plurality of strands are combined to form the rope.

13. A rope adapted to engage a structural member, the rope comprising:

a plurality of wrapped yarns, where each wrapped yarn comprises a first set of first fibers and a second set of second fibers; wherein

the first set of the first fibers forms a core that is substantially surrounded by the second set;

the first fibers are comprised of HMPE and substantially provide the load bearing characteristics of the rope;

the second fibers are comprised of polyester and substantially provide abrasion resistance properties and gripping ability of the rope.

14. A rope as recited in claim 13 , in which cross-sectional shapes of the first and second fibers are different.

15. A rope as recited in claim 13 , in which cross-sectional shapes of the first and second fibers are substantially the same.

16. A rope as recited in claim 13 , in which cross-sectional shapes of the first and second fibers are substantially circular.

17. A rope as recited in claim 13 , in which cross-sectional areas of the first fibers are larger than cross-sectional areas of the second fibers.

18. A rope as recited in claim 13 , in which cross-sectional areas of the second fibers are larger than cross-sectional areas of the first fibers.

19. A rope as recited in claim 13 , in which cross-sectional areas of the first and second fibers are substantially the same size.

20. A blended yarn comprising:

a plurality of first fibers; and

a plurality of second fibers, where

a coefficient of friction of the second fibers is greater than a coefficient of friction of the first fibers,

abrasion resistance characteristics of the second fibers are greater than abrasion resistance properties of the first fibers, and

a gripping ability of the second fibers is greater than a gripping ability of the first fibers; wherein

the plurality of second fibers are combined with the plurality of first fibers such that

the first fibers extend along the length of the blended yarn and the second fibers do not extend along the length of the blended yarn, and

at least a portion of the second fibers are engaged with and extend from the plurality of first fibers effectively to define surface characteristics of the blended yarn; wherein

the second fibers are LCP and Aramid fibers.

21. A blended yarn as recited in claim 20 , in which the second fibers at least partly surround the first fibers.

22. The blended yarn as recited in claim 20 , in which the first fibers form a core and the second fibers surround the first fibers.

23. A blended yarn as recited in claim 20 , in which the first and second fibers are combined using a process wherein at least some of the second fibers extend at least partly around some of the first fibers.

24. A blended yarn as recited in claim 20 , in which at least a plurality of the first fibers are continuous and at least a plurality of the second fibers are discontinuous.

25. A blended yarn as recited in claim 20 , in which the first fibers are HMPE fibers.

26. A braided rope formed from a plurality of blended yarns as recited in claim 20 , wherein, when the rope contacts the structural member, the second fibers of the blended yarns are primarily in contact with the structural member and the first set of fibers substantially bear tension loads on the rope.

27. A rope formed from a plurality of blended yarns as recited in claim 20 , in which the rope comprises a core and a jacket.
