Abstract

A dressing assembly for use with a reduced pressure treatment system, the dressing assembly develops a directed force under reduced pressure. The directed force may be a radial force or a closing force. The dressing assembly includes a shaped dressing bolster having a shaped extremity that is operable to evenly deliver the radial force and to distribute reduced pressure. Numerous shapes may be used for the shaped extremity. The dressing assembly may further include an over-drape to assist in creating a seal over the shaped dressing bolster and against a portion of a patient's epidermis.

Claims (41)

1. A method for treating damaged subcutaneous tissue on a patient, the method comprising:

positioning a dressing assembly over the damaged subcutaneous tissue, wherein the dressing assembly comprises a comfort layer and a shaped dressing bolster having a chamfered peripheral surface and that is formed from a medical bolster material;

deploying an over-drape over the dressing assembly and a portion of the patient's epidermis to provide a fluid seal;

providing a reduced-pressure source;

coupling a reduced-pressure interface to the over-drape;

fluidly coupling a reduced-pressure delivery conduit to the reduced-pressure source and to the reduced-pressure interface;

activating the reduced-pressure source to provide reduced pressure to the dressing assembly to develop a compressive force and a closing force.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the shaped dressing bolster comprises a reticulated foam having a density greater than 25.6 kg/m 3 .

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the shaped dressing bolster comprises a reticulated foam having a density greater than 32.0 kg/m 3 .

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the shaped dressing bolster comprises a reticulated foam having a density greater than 80.0 kg/m 3 .

5. A method for treating subcutaneous tissue, the method comprising:

placing a comfort layer against a portion of an epidermis over the subcutaneous tissue;

positioning a dressing bolster over the subcutaneous tissue, wherein the dressing bolster comprises a chamfered peripheral surface;

sealing the dressing bolster to a portion of an epidermis proximate to the subcutaneous tissue; and

delivering reduced-pressure to the dressing bolster to distribute a directed force to the subcutaneous tissue.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the comfort layer is coupled to a tissue-facing side of the dressing bolster before sealing the shaped dressing bolster.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein sealing the dressing bolster comprises deploying a drape over the dressing bolster and sealing a portion of the drape to the epidermis.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the directed force comprises a compressive force.

9. A method for treating tissue, the method comprising:

placing a comfort layer against a portion of an epidermis proximate to the tissue;

placing a shaped dressing bolster having a chamfered peripheral surface over the comfort layer;

sealing the shaped dressing bolster to a portion of the epidermis proximate to the tissue; and

delivering reduced-pressure to the shaped dressing bolster to distribute a directed force to the subcutaneous tissue.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein sealing the shaped dressing bolster comprises deploying a drape over the dressing bolster and sealing a portion of the drape to the epidermis.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the directed force comprises a compressive force.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the directed force comprises a lateral force.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the shaped dressing bolster comprises a manifold material.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the shaped dressing bolster comprises a flexibility notch.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the shaped dressing bolster comprises an anisotropic bolster material.

16. A method for treating tissue, the method comprising:

placing a comfort layer against a portion of an epidermis proximate to the tissue;

placing a shaped dressing bolster over the comfort layer, the shaped dressing bolster comprising an oblique peripheral surface and a flexibility notch;

sealing the shaped dressing bolster to a portion of the epidermis proximate to the tissue; and

delivering reduced-pressure to the shaped dressing bolster to distribute a directed force to the subcutaneous tissue.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the oblique peripheral surface is an arcuate peripheral surface.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein sealing the shaped dressing bolster comprises deploying a drape over the dressing bolster and sealing a portion of the drape to the epidermis.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the directed force comprises a compressive force.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein the directed force comprises a lateral force.

21. The method of claim 16 , wherein the shaped dressing bolster comprises a manifold material.

22. The method of claim 16 , wherein the shaped dressing bolster comprises a flexibility notch.

23. The method of claim 16 , wherein the shaped dressing bolster comprises an anisotropic bolster material.
