Abstract

A method for performing an electrosurgical procedure at a surgical site on a patient, the method including the steps of providing a current restricting circuit operatively coupled between a source of electro surgical energy and an electrode, the current restricting circuit including: a switch configured to direct the flow of electrosurgical energy; and a plurality of current restrictive devices arranged in an H-Bridge arrangement, wherein the switch is disposed between adjacent current restrictive devices of the plurality of current restrictive devices; restricting the flow of electrosurgical energy wherein the current restricting circuit is configured to restrict a flow of electrosurgical energy when the switch is in a first position; enabling the flow of electrosurgical energy when the switch is in a second position; and dynamically controlling the electrosurgical energy delivered to the electrode with the current restricting circuit.

Claims (26)

1. A method for performing an electrosurgical procedure at a surgical site on a patient, the method comprising:

inserting a plurality of electrodes, operatively connected to a source of electrosurgical energy, into the patient;

introducing at least one return electrode adapted to contact the patient and configured to return electrosurgical energy to the source of electrosurgical energy;

operatively coupling a current restricting circuit between the source of electrosurgical energy and the plurality of electrodes, the current restricting circuit including a switching mechanism having a plurality of output channels for individually supplying the electrosurgical energy to each of the plurality of electrodes;

controlling the switching mechanism by a switch timing circuit;

restricting the flow of electrosurgical energy when the switching mechanism is in a first position;

allowing the flow of electrosurgical energy when the switching mechanism is in a second position; and

dissipating the electrosurgical energy to an internal load when at least one of the plurality of electrodes is in a deactivated state.

2. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising dynamically controlling a duty cycle of the electrosurgical energy.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the current restricting circuit uses passive components to route the electrosurgical energy to the plurality of electrodes.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the passive components are a plurality of current restrictive devices.

5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein the plurality of current restrictive devices are diodes.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the switching mechanism is an electro-optical switching mechanism.

7. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising selecting a subset of the plurality of electrodes to perform the electrosurgical procedure.

8. A method for performing an electrosurgical procedure at a surgical site on a patient, the method comprising:

inserting a plurality of electrodes, operatively connected to a source of electrosurgical energy, into the patient;

operatively coupling a current restricting circuit between the plurality of electrodes and the source of electrosurgical energy, the current restricting circuit configured to restrict a flow of the electrosurgical energy to at least one electrode of the plurality of electrodes when the current restricting circuit is enabled and to allow the flow of the electrosurgical energy to the at least one electrode of the plurality of electrodes when the current restricting circuit is disabled, wherein the current resisting circuit includes a switching mechanism having a plurality of output channels for individually supplying the electrosurgical energy to each of the plurality of electrodes;

controlling the switching mechanism by a switch timing circuit; and

dissipating the electrosurgical energy to an internal load when at least one of the plurality of electrodes is in a deactivated state.

9. The method according to claim 8 , further comprising dynamically controlling opening and closing of the switching mechanism.

10. The method according to claim 8 , further comprising dynamically selecting a duty cycle for opening and closing of the switching mechanism.

11. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the current restricting circuit uses passive components to route the electrosurgical energy to the plurality of electrodes.

12. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the passive components are a plurality of current restrictive devices.

13. The method according to claim 12 , wherein the plurality of current restrictive devices are diodes.

14. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the switching mechanism is an electro-optical switching mechanism.

15. The method according to claim 8 , further comprising selecting a subset of the plurality of electrodes to perform the electrosurgical procedure.
