Abstract

A ride-on activity device is disclosed, wherein the device includes a seat, a base and a connector for movably connecting the seat relative to the base. The connection between the seat and the base allows multiple degrees of freedom such that the seat is capable of bouncing and rotating relative to the base. The connection between the seat and the connector includes a rotation safety mechanism that allows rotation at the connection when the seat is occupied by a user and prevents rotation at the connection when the seat is unoccupied. Furthermore, the connector includes a resilient member that allows the seat to bounce vertically relative to the base.

Claims (69)

1. A ride-on amusement device comprising:

a base to support the device on a supporting surface;

a seat to support a child, the seat being movably coupled to the base such that the seat moves in a first direction, in which the seat rotates about an axis, and in a second direction, in which the seat moves along the axis; and

a lock mechanism operable to selectively prevent movement of the seat in the first direction while permitting movement of the seat in the second direction

wherein the lock mechanism is biased into a normal, engaged position and the weight of a child seated in the seat disengages the lock mechanism to permit movement of the seat in the first direction.

2. The ride-on amusement device if claim 1 , wherein the lock mechanism selectively prevents movement of the seat in the first direction such that the seat is rotatably fixed.

3. The ride-on amusement device of claim 1 , wherein:

the lock mechanism includes a first lock member and a second lock member displaceable with respect to the first lock member;

the first and second lock members are selectively engageable; and

the seat is rotatably fixed when the first lock member engages the second lock member.

4. The ride-on amusement device of claim 3 , wherein:

the first lock member includes a plurality of first member projections;

the second lock member includes a plurality of second member projections; and

the first member projections mesh with the second member projections to prevent movement of the seat in the first direction.

5. The ride-on amusement device of claim 1 , wherein:

the lock mechanism includes a first lock member and a second lock member configured to selectively engage the first lock member, the first lock member being biased into engagement with the second lock member; and

the seat is rotatably fixed when the first lock member is engaged with the second lock member.

6. The ride-on amusement device of claim 1 further comprising a handle bar assembly coupled to the child seat and configured to be gripped by a child seated in the child seat.

7. The ride-on amusement device of claim 6 , wherein the handle bar assembly comprises a generally arcuate member.

8. The ride on amusement device of claim 6 , wherein the handle bar assembly further comprises an electronic assembly including a motion switch for triggering sensory output when the device moves in the first or second directions.

9. The ride-on amusement device of claim 1 , wherein:

the device further comprises a connector disposed between the child seat and the base, the connector supporting the child seat;

the connector comprises a first connector portion telescopically coupled to a second connector portion;

the first connector portion includes a first lock member;

the second connector portion includes a second lock member configured to selectively engage the first lock member;

the first lock member is biased into engagement with the second lock member; and

the seat is rotatably fixed when the first lock member is engaged with the second lock member.

10. A ride-on amusement device for a child, the device comprising:

a base to support the device on a supporting surface;

a seat to support a child, the seat being movably coupled to the base such that the seat moves in a first direction, in which the seat rotates about an axis, and in a second direction, in which the seat moves along the axis;

a lock mechanism operable in a first, disengaged position, in which movement of the seat in the first direction is permitted, and in a second, engaged position, in which the movement of the seat in the first direction is prevented; and

a connector disposed between the child seat and the base, the connector supporting the child seat, wherein the connector comprises a first connector portion telescopically coupled to a second connector portion, the first connector portion including a first lock member and the second connector portion including a second lock member configured to selectively engage the first lock member;

wherein the first lock member is biased into engagement with the second lock member; and wherein the seat is rotatably fixed when the first lock member is engaged with the second lock member.

11. The ride-on amusement device of claim 10 , wherein:

the lock mechanism selectively prevents movement of the seat in the first direction such that the seat is rotatably fixed; and

movement of the seat in the second direction is permitted regardless of the position of the lock mechanism.

12. The ride-on amusement device of claim 10 , wherein:

the lock mechanism includes a first lock member and a second lock member displaceable with respect to the first lock member;

the first and second lock members are selectively engageable; and

the seat is rotatably fixed when the first lock member engages the second lock member.

13. The ride-on amusement device of claim 12 , wherein:

the first lock member includes a plurality of first member projections;

the second lock member includes a plurality of second member projections; and

the first member projections mesh with the second member projections to prevent movement of the child seat in the first direction.

14. A ride-on amusement device for a child, the device comprising:

a base to support the device on a supporting surface; and

a seat to support a child, the seat being movably coupled to the base such that the seat moves in a first direction, in which it the seat rotates about an axis, and in a second direction, in which the seat moves along the axis,

wherein the ride-on amusement device operates in a first, loaded seat condition, in which movement of the seat in the first and second directions is permitted, and in a second, unloaded seat condition, in which the movement of the seat in the first direction is prevented.

15. The ride-on amusement device of claim 14 , wherein:

in the unloaded condition, movement in the first direction is prevented such that the seat is rotatably fixed with respect to the base;

movement in the second direction is permitted in both the loaded and unloaded conditions.

16. The ride-on amusement device of claim 15 further comprising a connector disposed between the seat and the base, the connector including a first connector portion telescopically coupled to the second connector portion.

17. The ride-on amusement device of claim 16 , wherein:

the first connector portion is biased into engagement with the second connector portion in the unloaded condition; and

the first connector portion is disengaged from the second connector portion in the loaded condition.

18. The ride-on amusement device of claim 17 , wherein:

the first connector portion includes a first plurality of projections;

the second connector portion includes a second plurality of projections; and

in the unloaded condition, the first plurality of projections mesh with the second plurality of projections to prevent movement of the seat in the first direction.

19. A ride-on amusement device comprising:

a base to support the device on a supporting surface;

a seat to support a child, the seat being movably coupled to the base such that the seat moves in a first direction, in which the seat rotates about an axis, and in a second direction, in which the seat moves along the axis; and

a lock mechanism operable to selectively prevent movement of the seat in the first direction while permitting movement of the seat in the second direction, the lock mechanism including a first lock member and a second lock member configured to selectively engage the first lock member, the first lock member being biased into engagement with the second lock member,

wherein the seat is rotatably fixed when the first lock member is engaged with the second lock member.

20. A ride-on amusement device comprising:

a base to support the device on a supporting surface;
