Abstract

Methods of establishing an insulin delivery rate in a pump and an insulin pump are disclosed. A method includes selecting a set of alerts from one or more sets of alerts. The method also includes initiating a test process based on the set of alerts. The method further includes, upon activation of each alert in the selected set of alerts, prompting a user to input a blood glucose level.

Claims (22)

1. An insulin pump comprising:

a pump mechanism;

a memory configured to store one or more sets of alerts;

a programmable circuit arranged to control the pump mechanism and operatively connected to the memory, the programmable circuit programmed to:

select a set of alerts from one or more sets of alerts, each alert of the selected set of alerts representing a preset times during a basal test process at which the user is prompted to enter a current blood glucose level;

initiate the basal test process based on the set of alerts; and

upon activation of each alert in the selected set of alerts at the preset time, display a blood glucose input screen prompting a user to input a current blood glucose level.

2. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sets of alerts are customizable.

3. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to allow a user to optionally delay input of the blood glucose level.

4. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sets of alerts represents basal rate tests occurring entirely within one of a morning, afternoon, evening, or overnight portion of a day.

5. The insulin pump of claim 1 , further comprising determining that the blood glucose level is outside of a range defined at least in part by a low blood glucose threshold or a high blood glucose threshold.

6. The insulin pump of claim 5 , wherein the low blood glucose threshold and the high blood glucose threshold are programmable by a user.

7. The insulin pump of claim 5 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to, upon determining that the blood glucose level is outside the range, abort the basal test process.

8. The insulin pump of claim 5 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to, upon determining that the blood glucose level is outside the range, display a warning.

9. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to display test history data on a display associated with the pump.

10. The insulin pump of claim 9 , wherein the test history data includes one or more data sets representing one or more basal test processes.

11. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to present one or more questions to the user prior to initiating the basal test process.

12. The insulin pump of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the one or more questions relates to stress.

13. The insulin pump of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the one or more questions relates to health.

14. The insulin pump of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the one or more questions relates to activity levels.

15. The insulin pump of claim 11 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to log user answers to the one or more questions.

16. The insulin pump of claim 1 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to determine a regular basal rate at which insulin is to be delivered to the user based on the current blood glucose levels input by the user.
