Abstract

A subscription system includes a national subscription server capable of tracking which local stations subscribe to particular radio station music formats, for example AC middays, Top 40 afternoons, morning programs, or overnight Contemporary AC. A local music scheduler can query the subscription server for a log of nationally scheduled content to fill one or more dayparts of a local broadcast schedule. The subscription system can determine where to obtain the requested log, and provide the log to the local scheduler for insertion into a particular daypart of the local clock, while leaving the remaining dayparts free for local scheduling. Trusted subscribers can also be permitted to alter portions of log of nationally scheduled items. Inserting the log of nationally scheduled items into the local clock provides local awareness of both local and national media items scheduled for broadcast.

Claims (60)

1. A method of scheduling media by a local media scheduling system for broadcast in a local market, the method comprising:

creating a restricted log of media items, wherein the restricted log of media items includes a daypart restriction associated with the restricted log, and an editing restriction associated with one or more particular clock positions in the restricted log;

receiving, from a subscribing station, a request for a log of media items to be inserted into a specific daypart of a local broadcast clock;

in response to receiving the request, obtaining subscription information associated with the restricted log of media items;

determining, based on the subscription information, whether the restricted log of media items is to be provided to the subscribing station; and

in response to the determining that the restricted log of media items is to be provided, transmitting the restricted log of media items to the subscribing station, the restricted log of media items configured to be automatically inserted into the specific daypart of the local broadcast clock, while at least a portion of one remaining daypart of the local broadcast clock is left to be scheduled locally by the subscribing station.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein changes to clock positions, into which the restricted log of media items are automatically inserted, are restricted based on the subscription information.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing a plurality of restricted logs of media items, each of the plurality of restricted logs of media items corresponding to different subscriptions associated with different dayparts.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein automatically inserting the restricted log of media items includes inserting information specifically identifying nationally scheduled media items and times at which the nationally scheduled items are scheduled to be broadcast.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, from a first scheduling system, a local media log; and

distributing the local media log to a second scheduling system.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that a station identifier and signal type combination associated with the request matches the subscribing station;

determining a trust level of the subscribing station; and

setting restrictions on changes to the specific daypart of the local broadcast clock based on the trust level.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

granting the subscribing station temporary use of the log of media items.

8. A method of scheduling media by a local media scheduling system for broadcast in a local market, the method comprising:

transmitting, to a schedule subscription service, a request for a log of media items, wherein the request includes subscriber information;

downloading, in response to the subscriber information of the request, a restricted log of media items identifying nationally scheduled media items presented by the schedule subscription service based upon authentication and determining a valid subscription for the restricted log of media items, wherein the restricted log includes restrictions on use and editing, the restrictions on use and editing including a daypart restriction associated with the restricted log, and an editing restriction associated with one or more particular clock positions in the restricted log; and

generating a local broadcast log for the broadcast in the local market, subject to the use and editing restrictions by:

scheduling a first portion of timeslots of a local broadcast clock with at least one of the nationally scheduled media items identified in the log of media items to cover the first portion; and

scheduling a second portion of the timeslots of the local broadcast clock with at least one locally scheduled media item, wherein the first portion of the timeslots is different from the second portion of the timeslots;

finalizing the local broadcast clock to produce a finalized local broadcast clock including the at least one of the nationally scheduled media items and the at least one of the locally scheduled media items; and

generating a fixed local broadcast log from the finalized local broadcast clock to produce the local broadcast log.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein

scheduling the first portion of the timeslots of the local broadcast clock includes scheduling at least one nationally scheduled media item in an editable clock position, and at least one nationally scheduled media item in a non-editable clock position, wherein whether a clock position is editable or non-editable is dependent upon the subscriber information associated with the log of media items.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

automatically un-scheduling at least one editable clock position when the log of media items is downloaded.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

identifying, for at least one editable clock position, at least one eligible category group from which a replacement media item is permitted to be selected.

12. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

receiving information from the schedule subscription service indicating change restrictions associated with the first portion of the local broadcast clock; and

enforcing the change restrictions by preventing editing at least another portion of the timeslots of the local broadcast clock after the nationally scheduled media items have been scheduled.

13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

receiving a plurality of logs of media items, each of the plurality of logs of media items corresponding to different subscriptions associated with different dayparts.

14. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

transmitting, to the schedule subscription service, a local media log to be made available for distribution to local scheduling systems in other markets.

15. A subscription-based media scheduling system comprising:

a communications interface configured to receive, from a local scheduling system, a request for a log of nationally scheduled media items, wherein the request includes subscriber information;

a processor configured to:

create a national log of media items, wherein the national log identifies the nationally scheduled media items and timeslots at which the nationally scheduled items are scheduled to be broadcast and includes:

a daypart restriction indicating dayparts in which the national log is permitted to be aired;

an editing restriction associated with one or more particular clock positions in the national log;

determine whether the local scheduling system is authorized to receive the national log based on the subscriber information;

provide the national log to the local scheduling system, via the communications interface, in response to a determination that the local scheduling system is authorized to receive the national log; and

wherein the national log is configured to populate a first daypart of a local broadcast clock based upon the timeslots at which the nationally schedule items are scheduled to be broadcast, while at least one remaining daypart based upon other timeslots of the local broadcast clock can be scheduled locally, wherein the first daypart is different from the at least one remaining daypart.

16. The subscription-based media scheduling system of claim 15 , wherein an authorization to make changes to the first daypart of the local broadcast clock are restricted subsequent to the first daypart being populated.

17. The subscription-based media scheduling system of claim 15 , the processor further configured to:

provide a plurality of national logs to the local scheduling system, each of the national logs corresponding to different subscriptions associated with different dayparts.

18. The subscription-based media scheduling system of claim 15 , wherein:

the communications interface is further configured to receive, from the local scheduling system, a local media log; and

the processor is further configured to distribute the local media log to other scheduling systems.

19. The subscription-based media scheduling system of claim 15 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine that a station identifier and signal type combination associated with the request matches a subscriber to the national log;

determine a trust level of the subscriber on a per subscription basis; and set restrictions on changes to the first daypart of the local clock based on the trust level.

20. The subscription-based media scheduling system of claim 15 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

grant the local scheduling system temporary use of the national log.
