Abstract

A method of printing a printed output of a press comprising ink on a print medium applies ink to a surface, places individually controlled drops of aqueous solution onto the print medium in a drop pattern, and transfers ink from the surface to areas of the print medium that are free of aqueous solution to produce the printed output of the press. A method of variable printing is also disclosed.

Claims (34)

1. A method for printing a printed output of a press comprising ink on a print medium, the method comprising the steps of:

applying ink to a surface;

placing individually controlled drops of aqueous solution onto the print medium in a drop pattern; and

transferring ink from the surface to areas of the print medium that are free of the aqueous solution to produce the printed output of the press;

wherein the aqueous solution on the print medium substantially prevents transfer of the ink to areas of the print medium that have aqueous solution.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the surface includes an area reserved for static information and an area reserved for variable information.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the transferring step includes the step of transferring ink from the area reserved for static information.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the transferring step includes the step of transferring ink from the area reserved for variable information.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the applying step includes the step of applying ink to substantially the entire area reserved for variable information.

6. The method of claim 1 , further including the step of applying a coating to the print medium.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the step of applying the coating is undertaken before the placing step, wherein the coating inhibits the print medium from absorbing at least some of the aqueous solution.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of receiving image data before the placing step, wherein the drop pattern is based at least in part on the image data.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the placing step comprises the step of printing the aqueous solution on the print medium.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the printing step includes the step of operating at least one jet nozzle.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the placing step comprises the step of jetting the aqueous solution onto the print medium.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the jetting step includes the step of operating at least one ink jet head.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the placing step comprises the step of ejecting the aqueous solution onto the print medium.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aqueous solution includes one or more of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, and a surfactant.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aqueous solution comprises a gel.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the print medium is one of a sheet and a web.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the print medium comprises paper.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the surface is a surface of a cylinder.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the cylinder is one of a plate cylinder and a blanket cylinder.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the surface is a surface of one of an endless belt and a printing plate.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the surface includes an area reserved for at least one of static information and variable information and wherein the applying step comprises the step of depositing ink on at least a portion of the reserved area.

22. A method for variable printing, comprising the steps of:

reserving a first area of a plate for variable information to be printed, wherein the plate further includes a second area of the plate for static information to be printed;

applying ink to the plate;

applying an aqueous solution to an area of a substrate on a controllable point by point basis to define the variable information; and

transferring the ink from the plate to the substrate to print the variable and static information on the substrate;

wherein the applied aqueous solution substantially prevents transfer of the ink to the second area of the substrate that has the aqueous solution.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein the step of applying the aqueous solution is undertaken by an ink jet head.

24. The method of claim 23 , wherein the step of applying ink comprises the step of depositing lithographic ink to the first area of the plate.

25. The method of claim 24 , wherein the step of transferring the ink comprises the step of passing the substrate through a nip between a blanket and an impression roller.
