Abstract

Disclosed herein are methods and processes for the recovery of oleaginous compounds from biomass and in particular biomass comprises photosynthetic microorganisms. Also disclosure are oleaginous compounds obtained using the disclosed methods.

Claims (11)

1. An oil compatible with existing fossil fuel infrastructure comprising a percent mass fraction with a boiling point of from 260° F. to 630° F. of between 5% and 55% and a percent mass fraction with a boiling point of greater than 1020° F. of between 25.8% and 33.5% as determined by ASTM protocol D7169-11; a manganese content of less than 20 ppm and a strontium content of less than 20 ppm; wherein said oil has not been subjected to any of hydrotreating, decarboxylation, decarbonylation, hydrodeoxygenation, isomerization, desulfurization, denitrogenation, hydrocracking and catalytic cracking, said oil is obtained from aquatic biomass, and said oil is capable of being refined into any of diesel, gasoline and jet fuel.

2. The oil of claim 1 wherein said oil has a percent mass fraction with a boiling point of from 260° F. to 630° F. of between 20% and 35%.

3. The oil of claim 1 wherein said oil has a percent mass fraction with a boiling point of from 260° F. to 630° F. of between 30% and 45%.

4. The oil of claim 1 , wherein said oil has a percent mass fraction with a boiling point of from 490° F. to 630° F. of between 25% and 35%.

5. The oil of claim 4 , wherein said oil has a percent mass fraction with a boiling point of from 490° F. to 630° F. of between 20% and 30%.

6. The oil of claim 1 , wherein said aquatic biomass is an alga or a bacterium.

7. The composition of claim 6 wherein said alga or said bacterium is photosynthetic.

8. The composition of claim 7 , wherein said bacterium is a cyanobacterium.

9. The composition of claim 7 , wherein said alga is a microalga.

10. The oil of claim 1 , further comprising a phosphorous content of less than 20 ppm and a sodium content of less than 50 ppm.

11. The oil of claim 10 , further comprising a calcium content of 30 ppm and a magnesium content of less than 20 ppm.
