Abstract

A biosensor includes a working electrode 101 , a counter electrode 102 opposing the working electrode 101 , a working electrode terminal 103 and a working electrode reference terminal 10 connected to the working electrode 101 by wires, and a counter electrode terminal 104 connected to the counter electrode 102 by a wire. By employing a structure with at least three electrodes, it is possible to assay a target substance without being influenced by the line resistance on the working electrode side.

Claims (42)

1. A method for assaying a concentration of an assayed substance, comprising the steps of:

providing a biosensor that has a working electrode, a counter electrode, and at least one reference terminal, wherein at least one of the working electrode and the counter electrode is connected to a reference terminal; and

providing a measurement circuit for generating a voltage between the working electrode and the counter electrode;

the measurement circuit controlling the voltage between the working electrode and the counter electrode using voltage present at the at least one reference terminal.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the controlling step comprises controlling the voltage between the working electrode and the counter electrode to be substantially constant.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the controlling step comprises applying a voltage to at least one of the working electrode and the counter electrode.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the applying step comprises applying the voltage to the counter electrode.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of providing a biosensor further comprises connecting a terminal to the working electrode utilizing a conductive line that exhibits a line resistance.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the controlling step comprises compensating for the effect of the line resistance of the conductive line on the voltage between the working electrode and the counter electrode.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of providing a biosensor further comprises connecting a terminal to the counter electrode utilizing a conductive line that exhibits a line resistance.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the controlling step comprises compensating for the effect of the line resistance of the conductive line on the voltage between the working electrode and the counter electrode.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the controlling step further comprises minimizing the current flowing through the reference terminal.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the minimizing step comprises providing an impedance at the reference terminal that is sufficiently high such that substantially no current flows through the reference terminal.

11. A method for assaying a concentration of an assayed substance, comprising the steps of:

providing a biosensor that has a working electrode, a working electrode reference terminal connected to the working electrode, a counter electrode, and a counter electrode reference terminal connected to the counter electrode; and

providing a measurement circuit for generating a voltage between the working electrode and the counter electrode;

the measurement circuit controlling the voltage between the working electrode and the counter electrode using voltages present at the working electrode reference terminal and the counter electrode reference terminal.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the controlling step comprises controlling the voltage between the working electrode and the counter electrode to be substantially constant.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the controlling step comprises applying a voltage to at least one of the working electrode and the counter electrode.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the applying step comprises applying the voltage to the counter electrode.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the step of providing a biosensor further comprises connecting a terminal to the working electrode utilizing a first conductive line that exhibits a line resistance.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the step of providing a biosensor further comprises connecting a terminal to the counter electrode utilizing a second conductive line that exhibits a line resistance.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the controlling step comprises compensating for the effect of the line resistances of the first and second conductive lines on the voltage between the working electrode and the counter electrode.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the controlling step further comprises:

minimizing the current flowing through the working electrode reference terminal; and

minimizing the current flowing through the counter electrode reference terminal.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein:

the first minimizing step comprises providing an impedance at the working electrode reference terminal that is sufficiently high such that substantially no current flows through the working electrode reference terminal; and

the second minimizing step comprises providing an impedance at the counter electrode reference terminal that is sufficiently high such that substantially no current flows through the counter electrode reference terminal.

20. A method for assaying a concentration of an assayed substance, comprising the steps of:

providing a biosensor that has a working electrode, a working electrode terminal connected to the working electrode with a first conductive line, and a working electrode reference terminal connected to the working electrode; and a counter electrode, a counter electrode terminal connected to the counter electrode with a second conductive line, and a counter electrode reference terminal connected to the counter electrode; wherein the first and second conductive lines each exhibit a line resistance; and

providing a measurement circuit for generating a voltage between the working electrode and the counter electrode;

the measurement circuit compensating for the effect of the line resistances of the first and second conductive lines on the voltage between the working electrode and the counter electrode using voltages present at the working electrode reference terminal and the counter electrode reference terminal.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the compensating step comprises controlling the voltage between the working electrode and the counter electrode to be substantially constant.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the compensating step comprises applying a voltage to at least one of the working electrode terminal and the counter electrode terminal.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein the applying step comprises applying the voltage to the counter electrode terminal.

24. The method of claim 20 , wherein the compensating step further comprises:

minimizing the current flowing through the working electrode reference terminal; and

minimizing the current flowing through the counter electrode reference terminal.

25. The method of claim 24 , wherein:

the first minimizing step comprises providing an impedance at the working electrode reference terminal that is sufficiently high such that substantially no current flows through the working electrode reference terminal; and

the second minimizing step comprises providing an impedance at the counter electrode reference terminal that is sufficiently high such that substantially no current flows through the counter electrode reference terminal.
