Abstract

A composite, time-delayed, polymer-coated, granulated material for maintaining hydration in plants is formulated to delay acceptance of water in order to operate in drilling, plugging, and disking equipment used for aeration, soil amendment, or both. Whether potted or outdoors, whether relying on a third-material binder or a small, hydrated portion of the polymer itself as a binder, the material may be injected or otherwise placed below the surface of soils. Water is eventually absorbed sufficiently to expose the bulk of the hydrating particles attached to each granule. Addition of the granulated material as a soil amendment resists dehydration normally occurring in plants between waterings, yet its initial delay in hydrating supports water-jet injection and soil integration by resisting premature expansion from hydration.

Claims (55)

1. A method comprising:

providing a substrate of a first material as granules;

coating the granules individually with a binder;

providing a second material as a powder, solid and hydrophilic;

adhering to the granules individually, with the binder, the powder; and

introducing the granules into a location under the surface of the earth.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein introducing further comprises locating the granules a preselected distance under the surface of the earth.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein introducing further comprises:

injecting the granules into the earth.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein introducing further comprises introducing a third material after the granules into the earth.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the third material is selected from a naturally occurring material.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second materials is selected from a naturally occurring material, and the second material is selected from the remaining type thereof.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first material is selected from an organic material and a non-organic material, and the second material is selected from the remaining type thereof.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the binder is selected from a naturally occurring polymer, a synthetic polymer, and water; and

the method further comprises

injecting a flow carrying the granules into the earth, and

exposing the granules to water.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the substrate is selected from sand, gravel, and another naturally occurring organic substrate.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the powder constitutes from about 1 to about 20 percent of the weight of a granule;

the first material is an organic substrate; and

the second material is an acrylamide.

11. A method for composing an additive for injection into the earth, the method comprising:

providing a carrier comprising granules distinct from one another, having a first effective diameter;

selecting an absorber formed as a powder having a second effective diameter less than the first diameter, and formed of an absorber material distinct from the carrier and the earthen material into which the carrier is to be injected;

selecting a binder;

coating the granules of the carrier individually with the binder; and

adhering the powder to the binder on each granule.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising injecting the additive into the earth.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the carrier is selected from sand, gravel, and another naturally occurring material originating in the earth.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the polymer comprises an acrylic-related polymer.

15. A method for introducing a material into the earth, the method comprising:

providing a substrate of a first material as granules;

coating the granules individually with a binder;

providing a second material, in powder form, selected to comprise a polymer that is hydrophilic;

coating the binder on the individual granules with the powder;

injecting the granules into the earth.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein:

the first material is a naturally occurring substrate; and

the binder is selected from a naturally occurring material.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein:

the powder is sized to have an effective diameter of from about 20 to about 100 mesh;

the powder coats the granules in an amount of from about one to about 20 percent by weight.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein:

the method further comprises injecting the granules below the surface of the soil; and

the method further comprises exposing the granules to water for a time period following the injecting.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein:

the first material is a naturally occurring substrate;

the binder is selected from a naturally occurring material;

the method further comprises injecting the granules below the surface of the soil; and

the method further comprises exposing the granules to water for a time period following the injecting.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein:

the powder is sized to have an effective diameter of from about 20 to about 100 mesh;

the powder coats the granules in an amount of from about one to about 20 percent by weight.
